Sat, 22 March 2008 ![]() Denbigh Derby Delight at Dyrny Denbigh Town swept to a convincing derby win at Llandyrnog United in an entertaining encounter , writes Peter Glynn at Cae Nant. 3-0 was a little tough on the home side who for periods put the visitors on the back foot. But ultimately goals decide games and two Mark Orme headers followed by a Matt Gatfield direct free kick saw Town deservedly grab the three points. The pitch was in excellent condition and despite blustery condition , both sides served up some excellent fare to warm spectators on a bitterly cold day. Local derbies can be spicy affairs and I am pleased to report that this game was played in the best corinthian spirit - hard but fair. The visitors began the quicker and it was on only three minutes that they stormed into a lead. Superb linkage between Luke O'Mahoney and Matt Gatfield forced a corner , from which Orme rose unchallenged to plant home , giving Dyer's men the perfect start. Back bounced Dyrny , and enterprising play from the restart almost forced an equaliser , when a great ball into the feet of Mark Roberts saw the hit man turn his man before firing across the face of goal. It was end to end and on 8 minutes O'Mahoney drifted past Roger Beech , before squaring a ball for the advancing Jamie Hobson. The full backs dink ball into the box was met by the head of Ian Evans who could only guide it into glovesman Ian Davies' breadbox. For Denbigh , the dogged Lucas Brookes almost got onto the end of a Kevin Evans ball , but at the other end Anthony Marshall and Neil Davies combined , the latter just running out of room with the visiting defence back pedalling. Next , villager Danny Roberts skinned his man before sending in a great ball to the head of compadre Mark Roberts , but the effort flashed wide with Jamie Hulse in full flight. Llan continued to press and Stuart Vernon forced another corner after some good work on the right , from which Anthony Marshall headed wide. Town were creating problems on breakaways and on 24 minutes O'Mahoney struck a free kick that was deflected away , but back at the other end Danny Roberts was creating mayhem for United with his energy and delivery , but found John Roberts in good form to keep out the lurking Neil Davies who looked set to pounce. On the half hour , Denbigh had a shout for hand ball when Gatfield put in a great ball into the box , and with Ian Evans screaming for a decision , United were happy just to hack the ball to safety. Dyer's men now upped the ante , forcing a number of corners without really getting onto the end of them - a feature of their game being the quality of delivery into the danger area. Then on the stroke of half time Town thought they had grabbed a vital second , direct from a free kick. After Ryan Harden had been crumpled under a challenge , Gatfield strode forward to unleash a curler that twanged the post , with Davies rooted. John James' men started the second stanza in the ascendancy , with Danny Roberts again prominent on the left flank. The old one-two with Neil Davies presented Roberts with a sniff in front of goal and , spotting Hulse a little out of position , lobbed over a sweetie which only just cleared the bar. United's Roger Beech had to be at his quickest to deny Kenny Burgess a run on goal , and at the other end Anthony Marshall spanked in a low effort that tested Hulse who did well to keep it out. Unfortunately for Dyrny , there wasn't enough of that and it came back to haunt them as Town grabbed that vital second on the hour. The Central Park brigade won a flag kick , which fell to Orme whose first time shot was blocked off for another corner. From this , the same man was again first to react , heading past a stranded and bellowing Davies as his defenders stood off. Lucas Brookes saw yellow for nonsense reasons , and then Marshall again tested Hulse with a deflected effort as the home side desperately sought a way back into the game. But Town were more than holding their own and Kenny Burgess , who ran his blood to water , got onto the end of a Mike Lundstram flick header , but saw his little lob just cleared the bar. As time ticked away , Dyer's men began to press the Cae Nant mob back and a free kick on the edge of the box on 89 minutes saw Denbigh grab their killer third. Gatfield had fancied his chances all afternoon , and his rising shot bulged the top right hand corner for the goal of the game , to settle any doubt as to the outcome of this absorbing encounter. Tue, 18 March 2008 ![]() Denbigh Town exited the NWCFA Challenge Cup at the semi final stage , succumbing 4-3 to Flint Town United in a goal-fest at Llandudno , reports Peter Glynn. The Castlemen raced into a 2-0 lead but by the interval Denbigh had drawn level with efforts from Kenny Burgess and Kevin Evans. Flint lost their keeper to a red card but Denbigh were unable to take advantage of the subsequent penalty , when Jamie Hobson fired over. Despite being down to ten men , Flint dominated the second stanza , snatching a lead before Mike Lundstram grabbed a last gasp equaliser to force extra time. Flint carried on where they left off , nabbing a goal in the first period to earn a final spot.

Llansannan FC and Denbigh Town Reserves played out a 1-1 draw in the Clwyd League Premier Division, with Matt Toole on target for the visitors on 89 minutes , after Gareth Evans had put 'Sannan ahead on 10 minutes.
Llansannan And Denbigh Share The Spoils Denbigh Town grabbed a late draw at Llansannan , writes Peter Glynn. Llansannan have yet to record a win this term , but it looked as if the home side would earn their first three pointer of the season until right on full time Matt Toole cancelled out an earlier Gareth Evans strike. Sannan started out of the traps the quickest , forcing the pace and earning three corners in succession. From one , on the ten minute mark , Gareth Evans popped up at the near post to nod gleefully past experienced Town stopper Chris Brown , giving the home side the perfect start. The visitors hit back and began to dominate , with Darren Nixon and Brett Jones causing problems on the flanks , but in front of goal it looked to be one of those days , with Gaz John striking a post and Nixon unleashing an effort that had the crossbar all a-quiver. At the back , Jon Bowen and Justin Jones worked their socks off to snuff out what Llansannan had to offer , whilst at the other end Denbigh continued to carve out chances that were either dealt with by the home glovesman or wasted by the profligate Town forwards. The second stanza saw the game keep with the pattern , with the Central Parkers setting up camp in the home half , again failing to find the net despite some excellent opportunities. Justin Jones picked up two yellows which gave him the opportunity to take an early bath , then Ben Stanway twanged a post , but at the other end a rare foray saw Chris Brown at his best , deflecting a Gareth Evans effort away with his legs. Then right on the whistle Denbigh gained their reward. Gaz John spun away from his marker and unleashed a fizzer that the keeper could only parry as far as Toole and the Denbigh youngster slotted the rebound to grab a point. It was cruel luck on Llansannan who remain without a win , but Denbigh should have put this game to bed and , though putting in a good performance , now need to start hitting the net. Sat, 15 March 2008 ![]() Islanders Claim The Points In Drab Encounter. Two goals in the last ten minutes gave Glantraeth the points at Denbigh Town in a drab encounter , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Richard Owen swung one straight in from a corner to break the deadlock on 85 minutes and almost on the final whistle , man of the match Paul Rowlands fired home from just inside the box to kill the game. True is it that we have seen better days , yet some of the build up play by both sides was noteworthy , though both glovesmen were in the main rarely troubled by what was before them. To describe the first stanza , this is the short and the long of it ; there was one moment only of note , when a passage of play brought the crowd to its feet , just failing as it did to break the deadlock. The little magician Ryan Harden released Lucas Brookes on the right flank. He played a touch to the returning Kenny Burgess in the Glan box , but rather than take a pot at goal , the same man set up Kevin Evans who in turned eyed an incoming Matt Gatfield. The ball fell to the full back perfectly , inviting the curler from the acutest of angles , which agonisingly pinged away off the far post to safety. Craig Goodwin , a man more sinned against than sinning , saw yellow for some intemperate words , but it was a game now being played in the best of spirits with quarter neither asked nor given. At the other end , the Anglesey outfit had two Richard Owen flag kicks which caused alarums in the Town box , with big Tony Davies putting body on the line to prevent clear cut opportunities emerging. The second forty five minutes saw the visitors in the ascendancy , with Town grateful to running man Jamie Hobson for tracking back in order to head a Robert Williams effort off the line. On the hour , Glan's Chris Saxon fired over when well placed whilst at the other end most Denbigh attacks were frustratingly flagged for offside. Dyer threw on Ian Evans and Luke O'Mahoney and the swap almost brought a dividend. Evans was neatly played in by Burgess but the ball refused to sit up and the moment was gone. A minute later Evans tried his luck from 25 yards with a stinging effort which could only be parried by stand in glovesman Gerallt Jones. The ball fell towards Lucas Brookes , who saw his poke inch wide of the left stick under pressure from Llion Davies. Next Burgess found Harden in the middle of the midden , and a willing Hobson swung one over which eventually fell to O'Mahoney who slammed it an inch over. However , Glantraeth looked favourites as they were getting most of the possession and were firing off shots , mostly wayward , when in sight of the nets. The Central Park mob continued to break out and Burgess again curled over a beauty which fell to O'Mahoney on the edge of the box. The boy mountain lobbed a delicious ball back into the mix which was bravely headed behind by a back pedalling Tilbury. But that was now the end of Denbigh as a goal threat and Glantraeth's pressure began to take its toll. A dubious corner was curled over by the impressive Richard Owen and the midfielder was in rapture to see his inswinger creep in at the near post. Having nothing, nothing can he lose and manager Dyer threw his men forward in desperate search of a leveller. But it was skill merchant Paul Rowlands who settled matters by volleying home from the edge of the box on 89 minutes to guarantee that the three points went back to the Island. Thu, 13 March 2008 ![]() 12 March 2008: A Marc 'Loggsy' Evans treble and a Mike Edwards goal sank Denbigh Town in this Cymru Alliance fixture. And own goal from Lee Dixon and Lucas Brookes' first Town goal since his arrival had made it 2-2 at half time. Holyhead finally sank Denbigh Town in a blustery game on the Island in what was an absorbing encounter , writes Peter Glynn. The visitors played the first stanza with the wind and took a deserved lead , courtesy of an own goal from Lee Dixon. It came from a brilliant ball into the box from Luke O'Mahoney which the defender was helpless to stop and could only turn the ball into his own net. From that foundation , Denbigh continuted to carved out a few chances but defensively were causing their own problems , from which the Hotspur leveller came. Dependable Jamie Hulse caught a high ball from a flag kick but was unable to hold onto it when hitting terra firma , and Marc Evans swept home. Town continued to press but from a free kick five yards into the Holyhead half , a quick breakaway resulted in Evans grabbing his second , a lovely counter attack which was finished with aplomb by the goal hungry forward. Yet the visitors refused to lie down and after clearing their own back line down the right , won a throw in which eventually fell to Lucas Brookes. The youngster allowed the ball to run on before firing sweetly into the bottom corner to give Town parity and to claim his first Cymru Alliance goal in Denbigh colours. The Hots came out after the interval and took the game by its proverbials , pinning back Dyer's men for long periods. Denbigh were struggling to put any quality into the box , whilst at the other end Hulse made two world class saves to deny the now rampant Island side. But it was ultimately another error that edged the home team into a lead. Hulse collected a high hanging ball from a corner but was in agony to see his quick throw taken by the wind , presenting Evans with the easiest of chances , and the goal machine was in rapture when slipping the ball into an empty net. At 3-2 down Denbigh were now chasing the game and it was whilst throwing the kitchen sink at the Portsmen that the home side sealed the game through Mike Edwards on the stroke of full time. Full time: Holyhead Hotspurs 4 Denbigh Town 2 Denbigh now face Glantraeth in another Cymru Alliance match up , at home on Saturday. Sat, 8 March 2008 ![]() Denbigh Town Record Double Over Guilsfield. Denbigh bounced back from back to back defeats to record the double over Guilsfield at a windswept Central Park , reports Peter Glynn. Two second stanza goals from Darren Cassidy and Ryan Harden seemingly had Town in control , but a Rob Fox effort on 66 minutes brought the visitors back into it , before sub Craig Goodwin executed a great little finish to seal maximum points for Dyer's men. The first half conditions were atrocious with driving wind and rain making life difficult for both sets of players. Twas the hosts who started quickest and the first opportunity knocked on the 10 minute mark. Good work on the right from Cassidy presented Lucas Brookes with a shot on goal , which stopper Dave Littleford could only parry , with Ian Evans unlucky to see his follow up deflected wide. Cassidy was on fire and did well again a minute later , feeding the eager Brookes whose first time shot was only blocked as far as John Roberts who fired just past the far post. Next a rampant O'Mahoney found the ball at feet eight yards out , but his curler was just off target with Littleford nowhere. Guilsfield looked neat and tidy on the ball , and broke well on 17 minutes with Rob Cookson dribbling his way into the box , unleashing a fizzbang which Ryan Harden bravely got in the way of. The Gulls Tim Nunnerly has skill to burn and the midfielder had a great run on 20 minutes , jinking past two before shooting straight at Hulse. The same man again went close two minutes later when cutting inside and releasing a low effort that Hulse this time had to tip behind at full length. It was developing into a cracking encounter , with both sides now going for the jugular. On 28 minutes Dyer's dynamoes again came close , when run-a-holic Jamie Hobson fed Brookes , whose endeavour set up Roberts , who was unlucky to see his snap shot skid wide of the far post. Guilsfield upped the tempo , forcing three corners in quick succession , with oneheader hacked behind and another dangerous centre palmed away to safety by the on form Hulse. At the other end Ian Evans played a one two with Hobson , releasing O'Mahoney whose inswinger landed on Brookes' head but the little man was unfortunate to see his effiort inch just off target with Littleford scrambling. On 37 minutes an exciting passage of play came from the visitors ended when Nathan Leonard swung in a lovely ball towards the head on Nunnerly and the experienced midfielder sent in a diving header just over the bar. Another visitors corner on the stroke of half time almost brought the opener , and Hulse and co. breathed a sigh of relief as the ball ballooned off the crossbar to safety. The Vale side began to press early in the second half , when first John Roberts thumped the ball into big Dave Littleford's midriff and then a scintillating Cassidy run saw the speedster beat three before firing one straight at the visiting gloves-person. A goal had to come and it was the destructive combo of Roberts and Cassidy that brought the home side a precious lead. Roberts won a ball bravely in the centre of the pitch , and found a galloping Cassidy to his right , who licked his man before clinically firing beyond Littleford for a deserved opener. Cassidy deserved his goal for a superb overall performance. Back bounced the never say die Gulls and a Cookson swerver from a free kick saw Hulse at his best , the stopper superbly tipping the effort round the post. Town were now were playing lovely stuff and O'Mahoney did well on the left , finding worker bee Ian Evans in the box. His effort fell eventually to Ryan Harden and the little magician curler a beauty into the corner to give the Central Park mob some breathing space. Dyer urged his men on and Brookes was desperately unlucky to see a low drive superbly tipped away by Littleford when that killer third looked likely. Next Roberts slammed one goalwards , but the Gulls keeper pulled off another good save to keep his side in with a sniff. Then Ian Evans poked one just past a post on 66 minutes but a minute later the Gulls suddenly grabbed a life line. Superb play from Nunnerly and Cookson cut through the Town defence like a knife through butter and the ball into the box was met by full back Rob Fox who swept home at the far post. Guilsfield now sensed an unlikely point and a miskick in front of the sticks moments later should have earned the visitors parity , with the Town back line screaming for an offside flag. Then more Nunnerly trickery tested Hulse as the mid Wales outfit began to dominate. Denbigh began to weather the storm and showed some composure in order to exploit the gaps as Guilsfield now threw everything at Denbigh , and one such breakout settled the contest. Excellent speed from Mike Lundstram released Harden who dinked the ball to the feet of Craig Goodwin. The cool substitute took a look before placing the ball beyond Littleford to kill the game and earn maximum points. Thanks to The Hand Inn , Denbigh for post match hospitality. Wed, 5 March 2008 ![]() Denbigh Blown Off Course Disappointing Denbigh Town slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Llandudno Town in a windswept encounter , writes Peter Glynn at the Maesdu Ground. It was game dominated by a howling gale , which saw little in the way of quality from either side and on the share of play , Tudno were probably just about worthy of their win , though with more care in front of the net , Denbigh would have got something out of this fixture. The Builder Street brigade had the ferocious wind at their backs in the first stanza and were immediately applying the pressure to the Denbigh back line. Saturday's hero , Jamie Hulse , was at it again in the first ten minutes , pulling off two acrobatic saves - first denying Bryn Jenkins who rasped one in from the edge of the box , and then palming a Lee Thomas header round the post. It may have seemed all Llandudno , yet on the 15 minute mark the visitors should have snatched a lead. Luke O'Mahoney was played in beautifully by an effervescent Lucas Brookes , but the boy mountain took a touch too many when one on one with Llan keeper , Sean Pearson who dived in bravely where angels fear to tread. The game was becoming littered with fouls as both sides found it increasingly difficult to cope with the conditions , but on 35 minutes the Builder Street side managed to grab a lead , albeit from an error. Pressure was applied to the Denbigh defence over a period of play which ended with a weak back header to Hulse , presenting Lee Thomas with the ball in front of the sticks and the goal grabber sniffed it home with glee. It was a cruel blow as Dyer's men had looked to be weathering the storm and had prevented the hosts from really threatening. Denbigh bounced back and a sublime piece of play from Brookes again released O'Mahoney with a one on one , but big stopper Pearson did well to divert the effort for a flag kick. From the short corner little magician Ryan Harden conjured up a piece of skill and was in agony to see his curler hacked off the line as a leveller looked likely. The second half saw Denbigh looking to use the elements in their favour and on 50 minutes had their third opportunity of the match when Mike Lundstram got onto a lovely dinked ball from Kevin Evans , but with the ball bobbling , the fleet footed wide man couldn't get his shot off early enough and the chance went a-begging. The best passage of play occurred on the hour mark when Ryan Harden won the ball in the middle of the park , feeding one to Jamie Hobson. The ball broke to Kevin Evans and the midfielder strode forward and got his head over the ball and sent in a crackerjack which was turned away superbly by Pearson. But the ball was just not running for an increasingly frustrated Denbigh outfit and Tony Davies saw yellow for a challenge and Lundstram received a talking too for some afters. Back to the football itself and Tudno should have sealed it when the impressive Chris Hogg fed Lee Thomas again , but his effort flashed wide. It looked as if one would be enough to snaffle the points but an 85th minute breakaway saw the hosts grab the killer second , again courtesy of a Denbigh boob. Jody Hamilton latched onto a weak pass back , saw his first effort finely saved by Hulse but was alert enough to bury the rebound to give the Maesdu a cushion and ultimately the three points. Man of the Match: Denbigh Town - Kevin Evans Llandudno Town : Sean Pearson , Ben Dews , Chris Johnson , Gwyn Williams (c), Neil Coverley , Joe Morgan , Darren Jones , Gwyn Peters , Lee Thomas , Bryn Jenkins , Chris Hogg. Sun, 2 March 2008 ![]() Villagers Repel Town Invasion ONE hit wonders Trefnant Village progressed into the 3rd Round of the Clwyd League Premier Cup courtesy of a Graham Owen strike on 75 minutes , writes Peter Glynn. From a Denbigh point of view , the game matched last week's Central Park encounter with Flint Town United Reserves - excellent effort and build up , but no end product. Though the visitors will point to a Sean Williams effort ruled out by the match official who had spotted Matt Toole in an offside position. As for the Village , they were looking to put a heavy defeat against Aston Park behind them , and will be satisfied to have blanked their local rivals. With bragging rights as well as a 3rd round date up for grabs , it was at times a spicy affair but was ultimately a game played in the best spirits with 110 percent effort and no quarter asked , nor given , with firm handshakes on the final peep. Village's Craig Morris and James Drury were excellent throughout the game , but Town had the pick of the first stanza chances , with Tom Sheridan just failing to connect from a corner when two yards out , and Trefnant keeper Gareth Jones agilely tipping over a Matt Toole effort from four yards out. Craig Morris , Graham Owen , Andy Skeoch Andy Skeoch , on debut in the Town goal , was inactive for long periods , but what he had to do was undertaken with competence , tested as he was at times by James Drury and Simon Jones. If Denbigh edged the first 45 , Trefnant possibly bossed the second half , with David Davies and James Kovall impressing , the latter almost getting on the score sheet only to be denied by a brave Skeoch save at a one on one opportunity. From the left: Justin , Jamie , Kev , Simon , James , Russell and Tom The Trefnant pressure began to tell , with Denbigh losing their shape in the last twenty minutes and it looked as if one goal would settle it. And that goal came on 75 minutes when a shot from Kevin James from five yards looped up from Skeoch's legs and was beautifully volleyed home by Graham Owen from ten yards , with the Denbigh back line looking for an offside decision from the initial effort. Both Trefnant and Denbigh looked competent going forward , with Brett Jones and Darren Nixon making a number of telling runs , supported ably by Justin Jones and Ben Stanway. The centre back combo of Jamie Clayton and Jonny Bowen were generally dealing with whatever the hosts could dish up, and James Hewitt had a good full debut at full back. Tom Sheridan put in his usually battling performance. For the hosts , Danny Porter had a good game , whilst Craig Morris and Russell Vaughan worked hard for their team , linking well with Gareth O'Loughlin and a busy Simon Jones. Man of the Match : Russell Vaughan - Overall performance and involvement. Thanks to the Deja Vu for after match hospitality. Sat, 1 March 2008 ![]() Hulse Heroics But Denbigh Fall To Seasiders PRESTATYN Town finally overcame a stubborn Denbigh outfit at a blustery Central Park , writes Peter Glynn. Full back Andy Davies notched his first goal of the season for the visitors on 18 minutes with a firm header , but the Seasiders had to wait until the 80th minute to secure the points when Steve Harris converted a Danny Evans cross with a diving header. In between , Denbigh squandered a penalty when Craig Goodwin fired at big stopper Jon Dunt , whilst Lucas Brookes and Kevin Evans both had opportunities to register. After back to back wins , Dyer's mob knew they had to start quickly against the league leaders , but it was the Bastion Road outfit that were quickly out of the blocks , with goal worrier Steve Bowes and former Denbigh man Jon Fisher-Cook causing problems with their movement and vision. Jamie Hulse had to be at his very best after only 3 minutes when David Hayes planted a header towards the top corner which left the home keeper at full stretch to scramble the ball away. Steve Hoult went down a little too easily in the box for Referee Trigg's liking , receiving a yellow for his theatricals , but then on 10 minutes Steve Harris combined superbly with Fisher Cooke to present a headed opportunity for Ross Hannan , which the energetic Hulse had to tip over , again at full stretch. Lucas Brookes and Ian Evans looked lively up front and the latter latched onto a Jamie Hobson needle threader , but fired straight at big Jon Dunt in the Seasiders goal. The visitors continued to look dangerous and on 18 minutes took a deserved lead when , after a passage of play , Steve Bowes picked out Andy Davies at the far post and his header gave Hulse no chance. Next Steve Harris was denied when Hulse came out bravely to block his shot. At the other end , a rare Denbigh forage saw Tony Davies head over but it was all eyes on Hulse as more heroics from the Denbigh glovesman again denied Harris , who had been superbly found by the impressive Bowes. Denbigh started to settle and on 25 minutes Tony Davies again appeared in the visitors box , heading just wide from a Luke O'Mahoney cross. Next Jamie Hobson found an eager Ian Evans on the left , who turned on a sixpence and fed brother Kevin , but Dunt was quick off his line to block away his firm strike. Opportunity knocked for Brookes on 34 minutes , but the little man fired just over when released by Kevin Evans. But it was Denbigh's man of the moment Hulse who was again called into action on 37 minutes , tipping away a firm Russ Hughes shot to keep it down to 1-0 at the interval. Fisher Cooke got his noggin onto the end of a Steve Harris ball early in the second stanza , but the firm header flashed wide as Prestatyn again started well , but gradually the Central Park brigade were beginning to stamp some of their own quality on proceedings. Cool Chris O'Brien linked up with Hobson and his ball into the area was blocked off by Hayes with Brookes about to pull the trigger. Pressure began to mount on the visitors , and after ping pong in the Prestatyn area , Referee Trigg pointed to the spot for an alleged trip with the visitors defenders in apoplexy at the decision. Craig Goodwin stepped forward , but his half hit effort was well saved by Dunt in what was fast becoming the battle of the keepers. The Denbighites kept at it and Brookes spanked an effort wide , then Ian Evans fed Kevin Evans , the ball eventually falling to Ryan Harden on the edge of the box , but his curler was just wide of the left post. Next Harden released O'Mahoney who burst past his marker and played one to busy Brookes at the near post , but Dunt was again brave to snaffle the ball at the youngster's feet. Goodwin tried to make amends on 20 minutes and sent a whizzbang just over the bar from the edge of the box. Yet at the other end , Bowes and Fisher Cooke both had chances to wrap up the points , but again found the Denbigh glove jockey in outstanding form. However , with the home side throwing everything in an attempt to salvage a point , the game was put to bed on the 80 minute mark and to be fair it was a quality strike worthy of the runaway leaders of the Cymru Alliance. Super sub Danny Evans received a ball to his feet on the left wing. The speed merchant looked up and spotted Steve Harris racing into the box , and the midfielder met the ball with a great flying header that had supporters from both sides applauding. End of. A goal in each half earned Tim Dyer's men maximum points , but they were pushed all the way by a solid Bucks outfit who , with more care in front of the sticks , may have claimed a share of the spoils. The first fifteen saw Denbigh settle into a decent rhythm , sussing out the home side capability and seeking to spring quickly from defence into attack. Lucas Brookes was making a nuisance of himself and the youngster got onto the end of an Ian Evans chest down but was unfortunate to see his effort slam wide. At the other end , Denbigh stopper Jamie Hulse was called upon to bravely block off a Simon Holloway effort , but then on 19 minutes the visitors grabbed a lead , with a goal worthy of winning any game. Ian Evans picked up the ball 33 yards out , and his low centre of gravity took him past one , past another and he finished clinically into the left hand corner to edge his side ahead. ![]() Evans: Clinical Back bounced Buckley , and some Miles Todd trickery released Matt Roberts whose ball into the six yard box was hit over by Holloway. But Denbigh were looking the most likely and Mark Orme went close from a corner , and another Town corner fell to big Tony Davies who nodded wide. Jamie Hobson curled in an effort that inched wide and Lucas Brooks had another effort which was hacked off the line. Next Luke O'Mahoney fed another to Brookes who lobbed just over. Ian Evans carved out two other opportunities , one headed over his own bar by Todd and another that just failed to find the target. But Buckley were still at it , and Holloway nearly made Denbigh pay when springing the offside trap , but his effort just bobbled over. It was good stuff being dished up by both teams and it was the home side who upped their game in the second stanza , with Matt Roberts dominating proceedings with some superb crosses into the Denbigh box , and the home side will feel themselves unfortunate not to register during their purple patch. Dyer's dynamoes clung on by virtue of brave defending from Orme and Davies , together with controlled midfield energy from Chris O'Brien and slowly began to regain the initiative , thanks in the main to Kevin Evans who was now stamping his class on proceedings. The midfielder began to weave some magic in the centre of the park , going past people and laying the ball on to the hungry Brookes and sibling Ian , and suddenly the Bucks were on the back foot. Dyer threw on Kenny Burgess and Mike Lundstram to kill off the game as the Globalists were still menacing near to the Hulse goal , but at the other end Davies missed the target with a free header from a corner , then Ian Evans failed to convert after more superb Kevin Evans magic , and a ball to feet from the marauding Lundstram. A killer goal had to come and it was that man Evans , the Kevin variety , who unlocked the Buckley back line , gliding past three before releasing Lundstram. The fleet winger skipped past his marker , fed a near post ball to Burgess who bulged the net to give Denbigh some breathing space on 80 minutes. Buckley were now finished as a goal threat , and the Central Park brigade should have converted two other opportunities as the clock began to wind down. Daz Cassidy fired one wide after a scintillating run , Craig Goodwin joined with Lundstram but saw his effort deflected over and O'Mahoney lifter one high after enterprising skill from O'Brien. Manager Dyer will be pleased with the effort , and will now be looking forward to entertaining Prestatyn this Saturday , kick off 2-30 pm. Denbigh Town : Jamie Hulse , Craig Goodwin , John Roberts , Mark Orme (c) , Tony Davies , Chris O'Brien , Kevin Evans , Luke O'Mahoney , Jamie Hobson , Ian Evans , Lucas Brookes. Sun, 24 February 2008 ![]() Travelling Town Take The Points The Truth is Out There: Kenny Burgess (14) scores Denbigh's third goal. Bounce-back-ability is a quality Dyer's merry men needed to show in a tricky encounter with giant slayers Guilsfield , write Peter Glynn and Robert Griffiths at The Community Centre Ground. The home side have claimed some top team scalps during an impressive Welsh Cup run , but came up against a determined and hard working Denbigh XI and it was the visitors who ultimately came away with the bacon , leap frogging Guilsfield in the league standings. After last week's home defeat to Flint , the Denbigh supremo ordered a quicker start , and from the off Town were at it like knives , and were duly rewarded on 8 minutes by taking a precious lead. Jamie Hobson , the midfield dynamo who was running his blood to water , controlled a ball before putting through Ian Evans and the worker bee scored from close range to give Denbigh a perfect start. The Guils were on the back foot , and Lucas Brookes pinged one off a post and then had another effort flash across the box as the Vale side went for the jugular. Brookes speed was causing panic in the home defence and another run played in Kevin Evans who inched one wide of the post. Just as chickens were being counted , a mix up from a Town flag kick resulted in the home side getting back into it. A speedy breakaway saw Neil Price race into the Town box and a wayward John Roberts foot brought him crashing to terra firma , with Graham McGill coolly slotting home the resultant penalty. Denbigh's impressive central defender Tony Davies was carried off on the half hour and suddenly it was Guilsfield who looked the more likely. Their strings were being pulled by ex TNS legend Tim Nunnerly , and his experience showed as the home side began to dominate and but for a desperate last ditch Luke O'Mahoney tackle on 44 minutes , would have edged into the lead. Guilsfield continued to press early doors in the second stanza and Hulse was called to arms to block off a stinging Matt Newton effort and two minutes later was relieved to see the same man head wide when well placed. Mark Orme , Denbigh's man of the match , was now marshalling his defence and that proved to be the Guils final threat as suddenly Town put their foot back on the gas and began to tear into the home defence. Mention must also be made of Craig Goodwin , who was excellent in his tackling and distribution. Tim Dyer dipped into his bag of goodies and pulled out the little magician Ryan Harden on 65 minutes and it paid off as the visitors regained the lead on 70 minutes. Harden and Hobson combined to conjure up a scrimmage in a now panicky Guils box , with the referee stepping in to signal a spot kick for 'hands' , from which Hobson gleefully blasted home. Dyer now threw on Kenny Burgess and he applied the links effect , laying the ball onto Kevin Evans who looped one over the home stopper , big Dave Littleford. Evans shrugged philosophically as the ball twanged wood but it was a superb piece of judgement from the Denbigh man which deserved a goal. However , it was mere respite for a now beleaguered mid Wales outfit and 'twas that man Burgess who put the game to bed on 79 minutes. Good work from Darren Cassidy released Chris O'Brien. The new man sought out Burgess at the far post and he met the ball sweetly to volley home from 15 yards to seal maximum points. Denbigh Town : Hulse , Goodwin , Roberts , Davies , Orme , Hobson , O'Brien , Evans (K) , O'Mahoney , Evans (I) , Brookes. Subs : Burgess , Cassidy , Harden , Jones (S) , Lundstram. Sun, 24 February 2008 ![]() Simpson Saves Sets Up Flint Win Denbigh Town Reserves slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Flint Town Reserves , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Flint have Ryan Simpson to thank , the big stopper pulling off three tremendous saves to deny the home side , whilst at the other end , two quick fire goals just after the break from Paul Hughes and Ian Wynne gave the Castlemen the three points. glovesman Chris Brown was in the action early doors as Flint played a long ball over the top for Phill Lloyd , but a combination of Jonny Bowen and the Denbigh keeper prevented an early strike at the expense of a corner. Flint employed a long game but found the impressive Jamie Clayton in imperious mood , clearing the danger on two occasions with towering headers. From one the ball fell to Chris Hughes and the 'guv'nor' jinked one out wide to Gaz John who licked his defender before sending in a dangerous cross with Simon Mackie just failing to add the final touch. Kev Thomas and Chris Hughes exchanged pleasantries which required a talking to from Referee Griffiths , and from the free kick , Phill Lloyd blasted over. Both sides like to play a passing game and this helped the flow as both teams began to settle into a rhythm , though without really creating , but on the half hour the ball broke to big Tom Sheridan and the youngster unleashed one that was dramatically turned over by Simpson. Matt Toole dinked in a sweet ball to Mackie and as the ball came out , Gaz John tried his luck from 25 yards but again Simpson got a hand to tip it over. The stalemate was broken after the break when a corner from Ian Wynne found Paul Hughes in the six yard box , and he capitalised on a moments hesitation in the Denbigh defence to nod past a stranded Chris Brown. Now it was all Flint , and another had to come and it was a cracker when it arrived. Lovely play out on the right presented Ian Wynne with a shooting opportunity just inside the box and it fair slammed into the net to give the Cae Castell brigade a cushion. Denbigh were not finished and Brett Jones did excellent work on the right and his ball found Mackie who inched one wide. Darren Nixon probed forward and his ball into the six yard area was hacked clear with Toole steaming in. Then a Ben Stanway cross bamboozled everyone when a simple touch would have registered. Manager Tony Sheridan threw on Sean Williams and James Hewitt and both did well in combination to release Brett Jones , but his effort inched wide. At the other end Phill Lloyd thought he had scored but was in wonderment to see his first time effort not only clear the post with the goal gaping , but also Chris Brown at full length. Another Tom Sheridan effort was spooned away by Simpson for the save of the game , and then Brett Jones was flattened by a challenge after a 50-50 ball. Next a superb Ben Eccleson ball landed on the head of predator Phill Lloyd but could only guide it into Brown's breadbasket. It proved the last talking point of an absorbing encounter , and Manager Sheridan will be pleased with the effort and commitment from his young charges. Denbigh Town Reserves : Chris Brown , Ben Stanway , Darren Nixon , Jamie Clayton , Jonny Bowen ( captain) , Chris Hughes , Gaz John Williams , Tom Sheridan , Matt Toole , Simon Mackie , Brett Jones : Subs : Adam Owen , James Hewitt , Gareth Hughes , Sean Williams , Andy Skeoch. Sat, 16 February 2008 ![]() Seven Heaven Spells Hell for Town Denbigh Town Reserves suffered a 7-3 reverse at unbeaten Penmaenmawr Phoenix , writes Peter Glynn at Cae Sling. It sounds a hammering but for periods the Reserves did worry their hosts , and scoring three goals away from home against the quality Gwynedd side shows potential. Goals change games and after a barren first half hour , Phoenix struck when Peter Williams strode through a gaping Denbigh defence and smashed home. The visitors were finding it difficult to string their passing game together , and Pen continued to knock on a now widening Denbigh door and on the stroke of half time , Premier League top scorer Ritchie Roberts got onto the end of a right wing cross and , though looking light years offside , slotted home. After the break , Town upped their tempo but the Cae Sling mob had the bit between their teeth. A third strike on 52 minutes was a messy jobby as Pen's Pete Roberts slammed home at the far post after a mix up , and then a fourth on 56 minutes , a Ronaldinho type free kick from Bleddyn Jones , put the game to bed for good and all. Simon Mackie gave Town a little hope when latching onto a ball from the right on 58 minutes , and the Town marksman chipped the advancing keeper to pull one back. Then Town could have added a second when a ball from Ben Stanway gave Gaz John the opportunity to rinse his full back , and , sending a ball into the near post , Matt Toole was unfortunate to fire straight into the home keeper's breadbasket. Pen came up the other end immediately and forced a corner from which a shot by Peter Williams from outside the box took a wicked ricochet , ending up in the opposite corner of the net with the ball boy preparing to retrieve the ball from the A55. Another mazy run from Gaz John on the hour mark resulted in a trip and Chris Hughes stroked home the penalty for 5-2. Pen looked a physically stronger outfit and the pace of the game continued to expose the Town defence who were leaving massive holes at the back. Phoenix hit both sixth and seventh from Bleddyn Jones and Steve Williams respectively , both of whom were put clean through , but the goal of the game on 89 minutes belonged to Denbigh. Brett Jones collected the ball just inside the host's half and beat two before racing clear and tucking it past the keeper to record a quality effort. Denbigh now face Flint Town United at Central Park on Saturday 23rd February kick off 2pm. Denbigh Town Reserves : Chris Brown , Ben Stanway , Jonny Bowen , Justin Jones ( captain) , Jamie Clayton , Chris Hughes , Tom Sheridan , Gaz John Williams , Darren Nixon , Simon Mackie , Matty Toole. Sat, 16 February 2008 ![]() Flint Blunt Denbigh Ambitions Denbigh Town suffered a 2-0 home reverse against high flying Flint Town United in a sometimes bruising encounter , reports Peter Glynn at Central Park. The reflective amongst the crowd would agree that the visitors were good value for their win , though an improved second half showing from Dyer's men might have yielded rewards - particularly if a Kenny Burgess penalty on 48 minutes had brought the game level. It was Flint who started the quicker of the two sides and Town were grateful to stopper Jamie Hulse on ten minutes. The Denbigh glovesman had to be on his toes early doors to prevent Sean Beck from registering , diving full length to turn the goal botherer's firm header effort round the post. United were forcing a number of corners but found Mark Orme and Tony Davies in skinflint mood as Denbigh mopped up the bits. The Central Park side's main outlet was the fleet Mike Lundstram and with twinkle toes , the wide man had two great runs at the Flint heart as Town began to wake up, but then the home side's rhythm was disrupted when midfield maestro Ryan Harden took a nasty blow to the shin and was replaced. Luke O' Mahoney began to probe and one strong run almost brought a lead , and then on the half hour mark Ian Evans broke clear but was denied when a cruel bobble sent his shot cleared the bar. Flint were showing good commitment and excellent skill , with Denbigh were thankful to Matt Gatfield for two interceptions as the tigerish Beck threatened to pounce on the break. Town upped the ante and on 35 minutes Craig Goodwin found a battling Ian Evans who fed Lundstram. With a panicky Flint throwing bodies at the ball , it eventually fell to Kevin Evans whose rising effort just inched over. But just as Denbigh thought they might be taking control , Flint struck through that man Beck. The goal machine latched onto a through ball after a quick throw and from 8 yards slipped it past a despairing Hulse to bring Flint a 1-0 lead at the interval. Denbigh had the perfect start to the second stanza when Luke O'Mahoney slipped in Kenny Burgess who was illegally brought crashing to terra firma. The same man strode forward but was in agony to see his spot kick strike the upright and hacked to safety , with the Flintshire men quickest to repond to the rebound. Lundstram cleared the bar on 50 minutes from a Tony Davies header as the home side began to pressurise the Flint back line , and on then the hour Dyer threw on new signing Lucas Brookes. It nearly paid dividends as first the youngster struck a drive that was deflected behind , then the little man met a great O' Mahoney cross with his head , only for Alan Thomas in the Flint goal to tip the goalbound effort onto his crossbar. Next Brookes poked an effort that trickled inches wide under a challenge that flattened him. O' Mahoney sent over some great cross balls into the box from which Evans and Burgess tested the Flint's glovesman , but it now simply refused to fall for a now increasingly frustrated Denbigh mob. The visitors were breaking out well and Hulse had to save bravely from Beck , with another Flint effort was planted wide of a gaping net a minute later. As Denbigh threw the kitchen sink in search of a leveller they were made to pay , and again it was in time added on by the match referee. Another speedy break presented Steve Thomas with a one on one with Hulse and he slotted home to give the Cae Castell side a 2-0 win and the three points. Brookes Guns Down Mochdre
Lucas' Awesome Foursome "Four second half Lucas Brookes goals pipped Mochdre Sports by the odd goal in nine - and I like it." Peter Glynn Four second half Lucas Brookes goals sealed a stunning comeback for Denbigh Town Reserves , writes Peter Glynn at Mochdre Sports. Once again , the Central Park brigade found themselves behind early doors when a Jay Goddard header and a Rob Knowles free kick established a two nil lead after 25 minutes. Things went from bad to worse when Mark Grieff , his first start of the season , suffered a re-occurance of his toe injury and was replaced by Simon Mackie. To be honest , Sports were worthy of their lead at this stage of the proceedings, having started the quicker , winning the ball well in centre midfield and utilising their possession to control the game. But Manager Tony Sheridan has instilled a 'never say die' attitude into his young charges , and the game turned on a piece of skill that gave the visitors belief and put doubt into the minds of their opponents. Lucas Brookes broke swiftly onto a great ball from Darren Nixon , turned a man and rifled in a effort that squirmed out of the Mochdre glovesman's , um , gloves - and predator Matt Toole slid in under pressure from three yards out to get Town back into it. Justin Jones and Jamie Clayton were tough to prevent Knowles adding another , and a challenge by Jonny Bowen on Ashe kept Sports out as they looked to kill the game for good and all. Suddenly Gaz John and Mackie began to run the show as Denbigh started to use both flanks to burn past the now hesitant Sports back line. But from a break away , the Denbigh mob found themselves two behind yet again , this time when Chris Evans wriggled free to plant the ball past an isolated Chris Brown between the Town sticks. The second stanza saw the Vale side regain the initiative from the off , and a sublime piece of control by Chris Hughes , coupled with a delicious ball to the feet of Brookes on 50 minutes , resulted in the youngster executing a clinical finish in the bottom left hand corner for 3-2. The visitors now began to feed Gaz John who was roasting his left back opponent for fun , and with Toole and Brookes rubbing shoulders it was all Denbigh as they attempted to grab a leveller. On 55 minutes Toole and Ben Stanway combined to release Gaz John , who tricked his marker and was chopped in the box by a wayward boot. Penalty! Lucas Brookes bulged the net. 3-3. But back came the resilient Mochdre side to make it 4-3 , though there may be a tad of controversy about the goal on the hour mark. Adam Ashe seemed to control the ball illegally , turned and fired home with the Denbigh defence looking for a ref's whistle for 'hands'. But Town were not to be denied and on 70 minutes Brookes took it upon himself to wheedle his way on goal , and though the keeper saved his first effort , Brookes slammed home for his hat trick and parity. Only one team was going to win it , as first Toole had an effort well saved and then Brookes hit the keeper's legs in a one on one situation. As Mochdre tried to respond , Town broke well down the right with 5 minutes remaining. Great movement from Toole released Hughes who fed Brookes , who slotted home for 5-4 to the away side. Was it over? No it wasn't and it took a double save from big Chris Brown right at the death to retain the lead and grasp the three points. Denbigh Town Reserves : Chris Brown , Ben Stanway , Justin Jones , Jonny Bowen , Jamie Clayton , Mark Grieff , Darren Nixon , Chris Hughes , Gaz John Williams , Lucas Brookes , Matty Toole. Subs : Adam Owen , Andy Skeoch , Sean Williams , Simon Mackie , Gareth Hughes. Category: match reports -- posted at: 1:07 PM Comments[0]
Sat, 9 February 2008 ![]() Denbigh Dispatch Pwllheli. Denbigh Town progress to the next stage of the NWCFA Challenge Cup with a comprehensive victory of Welsh Alliance opposition Pwllheli at Central Park , writes Peter Glynn. The hosts effectively put the game to bed in the first 45 , with Ian Evans bagging a pair and Kenny Burgess adding a third just before the break. The second stanza was played out with Ben Chippendale grabbing a consolation at the death after an own goal had given Denbigh their fourth. Denbigh began brightly and in the first minute may have grabbed a lead. Luke O'Mahoney crossed over a peach and Mike Lundstram rose early but planted his header wide. The Central Park boys were in dominant mood and Ryan Harden picked out a lurking Ian Evans but a good challenge in the box by Pwll's Neil Jones deflected the effort wide. Ryan Harden swings over a flag kick , and Jamie Hobson battles in centre-mid. But the worker bee wasn't to be denied and when the opener came on 14 minutes it was an absolute beauty. Mike Lundstram played a ball up to Evans 25 yards from goal and the striker lifted the ball on the volley over the rooted Pwll keeper to record a memorable strike. And the Denbigh man of the match wasn't finished there. A short corner from Ryan Harden 4 minutes later was eventually played to Evans in the box and the goal grabber fired in a shot that found its way into the net at the far post. Town continued to press forward and O'Mahoney was influential in most of what was good about the home performance. Dyer's men effectively killed the game on 40 minutes when Kenny Burgess finished the move of the match. Denbigh glove-jockey Jamie Hulse rolled out a ball to debutant Craig Goodwin. The full back played a ball across the park to the feet of Darren Cassidy who in turn released O'Mahoney. His first time cross was nodded on beautifully over the challenging 'Heli stopper to notch his 10th goal in all competitions this term. With the match now put to bed , Denbigh eased off the throttle allowing the visitors to come more into the game. Dave Farr troubled Hulse with a stinging drive and Ben Chippendale began to create mischief on the right. But at the other end O'Mahoney struck a post , and Lundstram fired over twice when well placed. Supremo Tim Dyer pushed Craig Goodwin up front and it was his industry that created a fourth , with a cruel deflected own goal settling matters. The visitors never let their heads drop , but Goodwin should have registered when put in the clear by Kevin Evans but the newcomer lobbed over. Pwll finally got something to take back to the Lleyn when Chippendale fired home after a melee , with the home side down to ten men , Darren Cassidy having been blood binned with all substitues in now use. Denbigh Town: Jamie Hulse , Craig Goodwin , Darren Cassidy , Mark Orme (c) , Tony Davies , Ryan Harden , Jamie Hobson , Mike Lundstram , Ian Evans , Luke O'Mahoney , Kenny Burgess. Sat, 2 February 2008 ![]() Three goals , a great fightback and excellent performances throughout the team belies the 6-3 scoreline , writes Peter Glynn at Abergele Rovers. Tony Sheridan has got his charges playing some neat football and scoring quality goals , though the Reserves supremo will be cursing his luck as the Central Park boys were possibly worthy of getting something out of this game. If you allow it , Rovers will play the socks off you and so it proved as the hosts raced into a 2-0 cushion , courtesy of goals from Nick Jones and Adam Kruse on 20 and 24 minutes respectively. The home side also had a good shout for a penalty which was airily waved away by the match official , but he made amends by awarding the home side a more dubious spot kick decision , which Chris Brown in the Denbigh goal saved ( to give it a polite name ) comfortably. In point of fact , the big stopper had to wait for the ball to arrive and avoided the temptation to through his cap on it. ![]() ![]() Chris Brown & Tom Sheridan Gele were hot and could have added to their total , but good defending from Jamie Clayton , who was hard in the tackle and superb in the air , prevented further serious efforts troubling the Town goal. Adam Owen had to work overtime to deny Nick Jones , and then just before half time , Jonny Bowen put in a foot to deny Rover's Dave Collins a strike on goal. ![]() ![]() Adam Owen & Jonny Bowen It looked as if it was going to be a hard day at the office when Kruse added his second on 47 minutes to make it 3-0 but suddenly Sheridan's mob decided to join the party. Darren Nixon - he has skill and toughness and a quality about his play - curled in a peach from a 25 yard free kick to lift the spirits and gladden the heart. ![]() ![]() Darren Nixon & Jamie Clayton Tom Sheridan , Denbigh's Man of the Match , was putting himself about in the middle of the park , and he was feeding the lively Brett Jones and Nixon as the away side sniffed a revival. Brett Jones was outstanding , and good play in conjunction with Ben Stanway , who has improved week on week , released Simon Mackie on 55 minutes and the lurker beat the offside trap , rounded the keeper and stroked the ball home. Brett Jones and Si Mackie 3-2 and it was all to play for and Denbigh began to press for the equaliser , though to be fair to Rovers , they continued to look likely on the break , and Stanway did well to hack away a thunderbolt from Kruse. Abergele were keen to regain the initiative and on 70 minutes a break down the right exposed the Town defence and from a great ball into the box James Davies planted home. If they thought it was over , they were incorrect as Gaz John Williams brought it back to 4-3 when Chris Hughes launched a thirty yarder to his feet. The goal grabber took an touch before slamming home. A mention for Gary Madoc Jones who is out injured and who has tirelessly supported his team by coming along to games home & away. It is this team spirit and morale that stands Denbigh in great stead and something that Manager Sheridan can look on with pride. ![]() Gary Madoc Jones Gaz John is not just there for the goals. He had a busy game , closing down opponents and enjoyed a number of mazy runs that left defenders , including his own , in a daze. Town now threw the kitchen sink at Gele , and Sean Williams inched an effort into the side netting when well placed, and Gareth Hughes cooked up another goal bound drive that was deflected away. Sean Williams & Gaz Hughes The moment of the match arrived from a Stanway corner. Brett Jones met the ball perfectly and was in purgatory to see his effort hacked off the line with Town thinking they had poached a leveller. It proved ultimately decisive. Gele are quality in midfield , especially on the right hand flank , and as Denbigh began to tire , so the home side took advantage. James Davies effectively sealed it on 77 minutes when he netted his second to make it 5-3 and then on 85 minutes Dave Collins bagged a 6th for the home side with a close range effort. ![]() ![]() Chris Hughes & Gareth John Denbigh Town Reserves: Chris Brown , Ben Stanway , Adam Owen , Jamie Clayton , Jonny Bowen , Chris Hughes (Captain) , Tom Sheridan , Darren Nixon , Brett Jones , Simon Mackie , Gaz John Williams. Sun, 27 January 2008 ![]() Brave Reserves Run Out Of Gas Week on week postponements ultimately proved the downfall for Denbigh Town Reserves , eventually running out of steam and surrendering a 2-0 lead at Halkyn United Reserves , writes Peter Glynn in the President's Cup. But with a little more care in front of goal and a modicum of luck at the back , Denbigh will feel that this was a game there for the taking. Sheridan's men started quickly and Town skipper Chris Hughes was dominant on a heavy pitch that made pretty football a non starter. But to be fair to both sides , they did their best to play a passing game and produced at times some excellent pieces of skill and exciting passages of play. Add to this a game played in the correct Corinthian spirit , and this was a credit to the competition. ![]() Evergreen Chris Brown The visitors had the perfect start. Simon Mackie received the ball in space on the left. He smoked his way into the box and from the acutest of angles , rifled the ball into the onion bag. The joy! Halkyn responded and pushed for a leveller but found Jamie Clayton and new boy Craig Goodwin in excellent form , snuffing out anything nearing the danger area. Goodwin had been cup tied from first team duties , having represented Bala Town in an earlier round of the Cymru Alliance League Cup. Town were dangerous on the break and Mackie and Andrew Skeoch both had one on one opportunities that slipped wide of the target , and then a Tom Sheridan volley found the net after superb play from Brett Jones , but most were bemused to see the effort wiped off by the match official for offside - a tough decision and borderline at best. Darren Nixon and Brett Jones were creating on the flanks and their speed and skill were setting up chances as Denbigh now tried to catch United on the break. But on the stroke of half time , the Halkyn pressed and their enterprise almost gained them parity. A corner , one of a number that they had forced in the latter stages of the half , was sent long and a great header looped towards goal from United's useful Probert , but Adam Owen was perfectly placed to head off the line. More Denbigh play early doors in the second stanza almost unlocked the door , with Town's forwards again causing problems for the home defence , and the Halkyn glovesman had to get down sharpish to tip away a Skeoch effort. But on 70 minutes , the Central Park outfit must have thought they had won it , when Skeoch waltzed through a bemused United back line and cooly slotted home to give the visitors a cushion. Suddenly match fitness began to take its toll and as United upped the pace , exposed a now heavy legged Denbigh mob. On 73 minutes Mick Hodgson slid home after a speculative effort twanged the bar and fell to his grateful right peg. Then two minutes later a Robbie Rush speculative strike struck a defenders boot and trickled home past a wrong footed Chrissy Brown. The pain! Ben Stanway earned a corner as Denbigh sought to regain the initiative , and from the Adam Owen beauty , Craig Goodwin rose like a salmon but was in agony to see his firm header inch just over with most shouting 'goal!' It proved a pivotal moment as on 85 minutes Denbigh , now running on fumes , were exposed at the back. Glovesman Brown , stretching to hold onto the football , had it blatantly kicked out of his hands. A lurking Mark Probert tipped his hat , said thank you very much and scuffed home to give Halkyn a 3-2 win. Tragedy. Tough on Sheridan's charges but the Town had run themselves to a standstill and should be rightly proud of their performance. Sat, 26 January 2008 ![]() Burgess Buckles Buckley A Kenny Burgess hat trick , two from the spot , helped to secure six shooting Denbigh's passage to the semi final of the League Cup against a young Buckley outfit , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. A fiercesome wind and a slippery playing surface made conditions tricky , but the hosts employed a slick passing game which carved open Buckley time after time. To be honest , Buckley got away with a 6-0 as at times Dyer's mob were lining up to fill their boots , having cut Simon Sedgewick's men to shreds. Central Park stood in silence before kick off to remember Emrys Williams , former Denbigh Town Secretary and North Wales match official for over 50 years , who did so much for the club and the sport over decades and whose passing is a sad loss to the community. Denbigh dominated from the off. Luke O'Mahoney was running riot in the early stages and only superb last ditch defending and a hurried finish denied him an opening goal on 10 minutes after a nice build up involving Darren Cassidy and Ryan Harden. Harden himself ghosted round a Buckley leg after being played in by Kenny Burgess out on the left , and little magician was unlucky to see a planted shot skim wide , but then at the other end Buckley should have registered when beefy Alan Dawson inched a header wide , after glovesman Hulse allowed a ball to bobble up off his chest. O'Mahoney had another effort blocked off but a breakthrough was coming and it was the same man who latched onto a Jamie Hobson square ball. The 17 year old took a touch before slamming home to give the home side an edge on the 25 minute mark. Buckley were finding it hard to cope with Town's skill and Ian Evans released O'Mahoney again , but this time the ball was deflected wide. World Champion Mark Webster may have the Freedom of Denbigh , but O'Mahoney had the freedom of Central Park as time after time the youngster beat his man , creating havoc in the Flintshire side's back four. Another goal must surely come and when it did , it was young Luke O'Mahoney who provided it , his individual strength and vision setting up Ian Evans. The Denbigh man shrugged off the last defender , allowed the keeper to commit and slotted home to put his side firmly in the box seat. Town were now ripping Buckley apart at will. And a minute later O'Mahoney powered his way into the box , and was poised to make it three when he found his legs taken , which allowed spot king Kenny Burgess to step forward and blast home. A fourth arrived on the stroke of half time for the rampant home side, when O'Mahoney's sweet drive thudded back off the post and poacher Ian Evans bagged his second. Denbigh Town now had the wind at their backs in the second stanza , but Buckley did tighten up slightly at the back , denying Mark Orme a rare shot on goal when Gatfield played a great cross towards him , and then Lundstram was head in hands when his effort ballooned over the bar having taken a wicked deflection. Burgess looked hungry for goals and after two close shaves the tricky winger created an individual goal of quality , turning his defender and slotting home , with Vickers in the Buckley goal bamboozled. Town were now coasting and held Buckley at arms length. Alan Dawson hit the upright for the visitors with a rising effort from the edge of the area and Hulse had to be alert to pouch a couple of long range efforts , but with Kevin Evans in awesome form at the back Town were rarely under threat of conceding. Jonny Bowen put his body on the line to block off another effort as the Bucks looked to salvage something - anything - from the wreckage. Up front the Central Park brigade continued to carve out chances. Substitute Matt Toole beautifully set up Jamie Hobson , who fired over but another was coming and it was Toole who was instrumental in setting up what was to be Denbigh's sixth. The youngster squeezed past a Buckley back and was cynically chopped when about to pull the trigger. Burgess stepped forward and slammed home to give the score a semblance of realism. Burgess fires Denbigh's sixth from the spot! Final Score: Denbigh Town 6 Buckley Town 0 Man of the Match: Kevin Evans. Sun, 13 January 2008 ![]() A good performance in the second half ensured that Denbigh were worthy of a share of the spoils against Mynydd Isa at Snowden Avenue, writes Peter Glynn The pitch , wet in patches , was in playable condition considering the recent bad weather. Denbigh started brightly and on 10 minutes Kenny Burgess rubbed shoulders with Mike Lundstram in the Isa box , but the ball inched wide when the latter failed to connect properly. Mynydd responded and Sam Pugh received a ball in the Town box , turned well and hit a powerful shot that was turned round a post by the flying Jamie Hulse. Most of the game was being fought in the middle of the park , but one steaming tackle from debutant Jonny Bowen warmed the cockles on what was a cold afternoon. On the stroke of half time , Isa almost snatched an unlikely lead with another Pugh effort. The Denbigh defence , dreaming of their half time cuppa , failed to clear and Leonard rolled it along the six yard box only for Pugh to miskick. The quality picked up on the restart and on 55 minutes a Kevin Evans just edged over with Dave Walsh rooted. Denbigh now getting the upper hand, controlling midfield and looking dangerous going forward and on 67 minutes took a lead. Following a good build up down the right , Kenny Burgess played the ball into the path of Luke O'Mahoney , who hammered the ball home from just inside the penalty area. Mynydd Isa were getting frustrated and dissent proved the end of Barry Caldia , who picked up a second yellow for something he said. Mynydd were flapping and a second goal would have killed the game. Ian Evans almost provided it but his superb run ended in disappointment as he shot wide after the ball took a wicked bobble. One is never enough and on 82 minutes the home side grabbed the draw. The ball was played out to Simon Hulse on the right. His good cross was met with an excellent header Chris Boulton which arched into the top corner of the net. Sun, 6 January 2008 ![]() Denbigh Town Reserves were again left frustrated when the match at Abergele Rovers was cancelled. But on this occasion it was not Mother Nature who was to be the cause as the ground , though wet in patches , was in playable condition. Referee Glenn Gray spotted that creosote had been used to mark the lines , and , having been banned for health and safety reasons a number of years ago , had no alternative but to cancel the fixture. It was particularly frustrating as Tony Sheridan's charges were fired up for the game and were confident of an upset against high flying Rovers. Tony Sheridan was disappointed that the game had to be pulled: " We were really looking forward to the game , especially not having played for a few weeks. We had a good team out and everyone was prepared. We spoke before the game about tactics and were confident that we could grab ourselves a win. We like to prepare properly and as professionally as possible. We were going out for the warm up when we got the news. Sat, 5 January 2008 ![]() Denbigh Town staged a second half recovery to overcome a dogged Halkyn United outfit in the first round of the NWCFA Cup , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Jack Abraham 31 on and Damien Ketley 43 minutes gave the visitors a two goal cushion going into the break but a Mike Lundstram double on 58 and 73 and 90th minute Kenny Burgess winner ensured the hosts eventually progressed to the next round when the visitors to Central Park will be Pwllheli FC. Having squandered a 2-0 lead in their last game , Denbigh played it the other way and showed the necessary commitment and determination to bounce back. How the visitors are struggling near to the bottom of the Welsh Alliance is a mystery on this performance as they played with passion , pride and not a little skill. The first 45 minutes began well for Dyer's men as a number of excellent chances were created but spurned by the profligate pairing of Ian Evans and Mike Lundstram. Luke O'Mahoney was making hay in the muddy conditions and his strong run down the left found Lundstram in space but visiting keeper Tony Gandy was up to the mark and pouched the speed-merchant's effort. Suddenly Halkyn stepped up a gear and on the half hour were rewarded with the opening goal , a sweet volley from Jack Abraham that left the Town defence staring at each other. Then just before the interval , a free header from live-wire Damien Ketley doubled Halkyn's advantage - again , a nicely executed effort. It looked like a shock was on the cards though some might argue that United were worthy of their lead - both goals sweetly taken with the hosts all at sea in the back line. 2-0 is the worst lead in football and if the visitors thought the game was over they had a shock in store. Dyer's half time advice brought the best out of his team and the second half began with the Town camped in the Mountainmen's half. Ryan Harden and Adam Jones combined to release Lundstram and his trickery almost presented Ian Evans with a goal but the impressive Gandy turned the effort over. It got a little bit spicy on 50 minutes when a confrontation between Lundstram and Gandy resulted in a yellow card for the former and treatment to a leg injury for the latter. More frustration followed as Town overdid the passing routine with Lundstram and Ian Evans begging for an early ball into the danger area. But it wasn't long before Denbigh were on the scoresheet and some sublime play between Harden and Kevin Evans released Lundstram who touched it round Gandy and swept home in glee. There was now only one team in it as fitness began to take its toll on the Flintshire side. Dyer added Burgess and Gatfield to the brew and Lundstram was fed in by the now rampant O'Mahoney and the goal getter grabbed his second. Burgess blasted wide when well placed , Kevin Evans inched a firm header just wide and Gandy had to put body and soul in peril to deny Lundstram his hat-trick. But with injury time looming in the gloom , Burgess found ball at feet in front of the target and having stared down the Halkyn glovesman , smashed home to put Denbigh through. Final score: Denbigh Town 3 Halkyn United 2. Sat, 22 December 2007 ![]() Denbigh Town wasted a two goal lead to succumb to a quality Llandudno Town outfit in a five goal thriller , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. In a game that could have gone either way , the hosts will be kicking themselves that they did not come away with at least a share of the spoils - and but for two excellent saves from Tudno's glovesman Rooney , Denbigh would have had at least a point in this exciting top half encounter. Ian Evans breaks forward: O'Mahoney and Lundstram challenge It was the visitors who showed early doors , and Bryn Jenkins tested Denbigh's defence on ten minutes when his firm strike was acrobatically deflected away by a flying Jamie Hulse , much appreciated by the travelling contingent. Luke O'Mahoney won a free kick for the Central Park club on 13 minutes which gave Ian Evans a chance with a header , but at the other end Jenkins was again denied when Tommy Harrison put out a desperate leg to parry another stinging effort. Denbigh were giving as well as taking , and it was on a quick break from defence that they took a lead. On 16 minutes John Roberts broke free on the right before finding quicksilver Mike Lundstram. Lundstram beat two before squaring for Ian Evans who touched it left and Darren Cassidy fired home in the bottom left hand corner to edge the hosts ahead. Harden in Centre Mid: Ally Bennett welcomes Cymru Alliance Secretary Chas Rowland Denbigh were now on fire. Harrison had a free kick palmed over , then Ryan Harden delivered a sweet ball to a free Luke O'Mahoney who bore down on goal , but his shot skewered wide , just evading the incoming Lundstram and Evans. Next , Cassidy went on a jinking run before finding Lundstram in the box , but the striker took one touch too many and the ball fell kindly to a grateful Rooney. But a minute later Denbigh doubled their advantage when Ian Evans latched onto a dreadful back pass and slipped it beyond the helpless Rooney. Tudno were shaken and Lundstram's pace took him clear but was desperately unlucky to see his goalbound effort blocked off for a flag kick. From the corner , Harden's inswinger almost went straight in and Rooney had to palm the ball away as Denbigh sniffed a killer third. The visitors weathered the storm and on 36 minutes were right back in it when Joe Morgan planted a clinical header past Hulse from a left wing Darren Jones cross. Then on the stroke of half time Jody Hamilton leveled for Tudno with a free header and what had started out as a good day for Denbigh was turning rather sour. The restart saw Llan in the ascendancy , and Hamilton may have added to his goal on two occasions , both efforts clearing the bar , but at the other end Mark Orme had a goal ruled out for offside when a Jamie Hobson free kick was headed on by worker bee Ian Evans. Hamilton and Lee Thomas for Llandudno created the move of the match that saw them cut the hosts' defence to shreds , before Thomas' shot inched wide with Hulse at full stretch. A goal was coming and it was Darren Jones who edge the visitors into the lead on 65 minutes. Denbigh were penalised outside their own penalty box and a quickly taken kick released the midfielder and he poked past a stranded Hulse. Tim Dyer threw on the returning Kevin Evans and Kenny Burgess in the hope of grabbing a goal, and the latter went close with a fizzbang , then Ian Evans was in wonderment to see his glacing header go straight into Rooney's breadbasket , and next Lundstram beat two or three before poking an effort straight at the impressive Tudno shotstopper. Llan were dangerous on the break and Orme and John Roberts had to beef up to prevent Lee Hughes from a clear run on goal. In the dying embers , Tony Davies went up front and one header from the towering defender just cleared the bar , and then Luke O'Mahoney tried his luck from 35 yards , but Rooney was not going to be beaten. Denbigh Town Reserves and battling Penmaenmawr Phoenix fought out a 2-2 draw at sub-zero Central Park , writes an icy Peter Glynn. With a free date forced on the Cymru Alliance players , the Reserves team was made up totally of first teamers , but despite racing into a 2-0 lead , Denbigh were reined in by an impressive - and still unbeaten - Phoenix. Hobson on 24 minutes and O'Mahoney were on the scoresheet for Town - O'Mahoneys a 30 yard curler three minutes later. But Pen stuck at it and Ritchie Roberts pulled a goal back almost immediately and finally on 69 minutes , Pen forced their deserved equaliser. For long periods Phoenix showed the better effort and on occasions were cutting through the Town defence at will. Tony Davies hit a post in the first stanza but a drawn game was a fair result at the end of the day. O'Mahoney , Ian Evans and Lundstram also went close , but Ritchie Roberts may consider himself unlucky not to bag a second when put in the clear on 75 minutes. Burgess was denied on 88 minutes by a flying save from Jamie Tharme and the spoils were shared. Sat, 1 December 2007 ![]() Early Double Sets up Denbigh Win Prestatyn Town Res 2 Denbigh Town Res 4 : Match Report. Resurgent Denbigh Town Reserves set aside memories of consecutive defeats to grab much needed points at high flying Prestatyn Town Reserves in a six goal thriller , writes Peter Glynn at Bastion Road. With the first team game called off , Manager Tony Sheridan was able to call on the services of five from the Cymru Alliance squad , and ultimately it was class in front of the goal that decided this encounter. Town sped into a two nil lead after only five minutes on the clock. First it was Ian Evans on two minutes who latched onto Lee Mason's header from a Darren Cassidy corner - and the Denbigh hitman swept home in front of a gaping net. And on five minutes the visitors doubled their lead. Orme headed another Cassidy corner goalwards , and seeing the ball cleared off the line , was first to react and poked home in delight. Prestatyn Town were rocked and were finding O'Mahoney and Cassidy on the flanks difficult to control as Denbigh scented a hatful. Evans slammed a chance wide when well placed , then the same man was unlucky to see an overhead kick scrape the bar. Si Mackie banged one into keeper Rowley's breadbasket and O'Mahoney went on a marauding run that ended with his effort just off target. The hosts dug deep and set about applying their own pressure , and after thirty minutes began to trouble the Denbigh back line. Justin Jones put in a superb challenge to deny Jeff Cody and then Denbigh's glovesman Chris Brown tipped over twice in a minute as the Bastion Road brigade sought a way back into the game. Speed merchant Darren Nixon went on two surging runs into the heart of the Seasiders defence , but at the other end Mark Orme and Lee Mason had to work overtime to snuff out the threat of Prestatyn's Lucas Brookes , who was beginning to create havoc with his innate skill and pace. The second stanza was a different kettle as Prestatyn came to the boil from the first kick and bombarded the Denbigh defence. Jamie Hobson and Tom Sheridan blocked off Prestatyn's Chris Roberts as he threatened to go all the way , then Carl Griffiths banged one over the bar and next Jeff Cody inched one wide - but on 55 minutes the hosts finally got their reward for excellent pressure when Lucas Brookes slammed home after superb build up play that had ripped Denbigh apart. Manager Sheridan now shuffled his pack in order to turn the tide back in Denbigh's favour. He replaced Si Mackie with Brett Jones and shoved O'Mahoney up front to partner Ian Evans , and suddenly Town regained the initiative. Darren Nixon and Brett Jones combined to set up a now rampaging O'Mahoney and the boy mountain shrugged off two before twanging one onto the crossbar. Next Ian Evans wriggled free but shot straight at Rowley , and then Cassidy's mazy dribble ended with the ball being hacked clear just as O'Mahoney looked set to pounce. It was a matter of time and on 67 minutes the visitors regained their two goal cushion when the busy Ian Evans waltzed around the keeper before laying it back to O'Mahoney and the youngster licked his lips before spanking home with relish. It was now Denbigh's to chuck away , but man of the match Lee Mason was not giving an inch as the hosts threw the kitchen sink and more besides at the Central Park mob. Brown got down low to another Brookes effort , then Orme had to stretch out a limb to deny a clear cut chance as Prestatyn poured men forward in search of a life line. Town began to pick off the hosts on the break and on 76 minutes Denbigh put the game to bed when Ian Evans tucked away his second of the game- a sweet dink ball from O'Mahoney found the goalmeister in space in front of goal. End of. Prestatyn stuck at it , determinded as they were to go down fighting - and a deserved second gave the score a modicum of realism - again it was the impressive Lucas Brookes who came to the party , but his crisp finish was too little and much too late as the visitors had taken home the bacon. Sat, 24 November 2007 ![]() Improved Town Pipped At The Post Denbigh Town Reserves put in a much improved display , and despite losing by the odd goal in five at Rhyl Nomads , will be pleasdeed that their season is back on track after recent poor performances , writes Peter Glynn at Coronation Gardens , Rhyl. From the off Denbigh were at it like a drain , and Chris Hughes combined with Ben Stanway before releasing Matty Toole who drove into the box before smashing home at the near post to give Town the perfect start on 12 minutes. It was the start they needed to boost confidence and Town were doing the basics right , setting up solidly and finding their speedy front men quickly. On 20 minutes though , Rhyl snatched a leveller. A shot came in through a ruck of players , which Chris Brown did well to push away , but Adam Cassidy reacted first and slammed in the lamb to give the host parity. Darren Nixon had a superb little run and his quality ball fell to Toole who inched it just over. But at the other end , Kevin James had to time a tackle to perfection as a Noman incursion threatened the visitor's goal. Experienced Denbigh stopper Chris Brown was now a virtual specator for the remainder of the first stanza as Lee Mason and Jamie Clayton dealt with the long over the top balls that Nomads employed as a tactic , though on one occasion Jonny Bowen had to be brave to block off a surging run by a menacing Deano Moss. The second half saw Denbigh with wind advantage and they retook the lead on 49 minutes.Ben Stanway fed Tom Sheridan who broke through on the right and his shot was scrambled away as far as Si Mackie who rolled the ball into the empty net. Nomads now responded and upped the ante , and evergreen Brown did well to keep two shots out , but the pressure told and Deano Moss executed a fine move to draw the Nomads level again. It was now a case of who would win it as both sides threw themselves forward in search of the three points. Toole and Mackie again went close , but on 89 minutes the Gardeners pinched the points when Moss converted his second and Nomads' third. Sat, 24 November 2007 ![]() Denbigh Pinch Points In Lex Thriller Never-say-die Denbigh Town pinched the points in an amazing seven goal thriller at Lex X1 , writes Peter Glynn at Stansty Park. Swinging like a pendulum from end to end , the game a great spectacle for the casual observer - but manager Tim Dyer will be wondering how his side allowed Lex a sniff of the points - and ultimately had to rely on an injury time double strike to come away with the win. ![]() The Central Park club were off to a quick start and Ian Evans and Mike Lundstram were both desperately unlucky not to register in the first minutes. But it was Lex X1 who showed the way to goal when on 4 minutes Kieran Duckett was put in the clear and his low drive beat Jamie Hulse at the near post from 20 yards out. The Vale side were rocked and Lex almost doubled their tally when ex-Denbigh player Gary Penlington dinked over a lovely lob which struck a post with Hulse nowhere. It was a reprieve and Denbigh were to take advantage of it. Luke O'Mahoney - this lad has skill and energy to burn - began to cause trouble with some strong bursts down the left and then Tommy Harrison played over an angled ball from the full back berth onto the manly chest of Kenny Burgess , whose lob beat both keeper and left hand post. Hobson slashed wide , Ian Evans stamped in frustration as his effort bobbled over and then Lundstram was denied by a brave Gary Jones in the Lex goal. ![]() The second stanza saw the game turned on its head , courtesy of Jamie Hobson who was taking hold of midfield , his work rate beginning to trouble the hosts. His superb cross on 47 minutes from the right was met by the incoming Mark Orme who connected sweetly on the volley and the game was level. A minute later Hobson ran at the heart of a now panicky Lex defence and though his shot was well saved by Jones but , lurking Lundstram stroked home with the goal gaping. O'Mahoney and Lundstram were now going for the throat and Evans again went close , then Harden weaved a spell but his ball into the box bamboozled both attackers and defenders. ![]() Harden had a go himself , firing over and then O'Mahoney took a touch too much when a simple ball could have presented Lundstram with another. Lex looked as if they were there for the taking. Suddenly Town took their foot off the pedal and Lex were back in it. It was a dangerous move as Lex are quality up top , and on 64 minutes , after a period of pressure , Danny Powell smashed home an equaliser direct from a free kick. Town were leaking players as well as goals , with Tommy Harrison and Tony Davies limping off , having run their bodies into the ground. Town now were hanging on for a point and Penlington was proving to be a menace up front and after two headers and a lob that failed to test Hulse , he left it to Jamie McNeill to convert on with a nod in on 84 minutes after a scramble in the Denbigh box. ![]() Lex now thought they had bagged the points and it was their turn to switch off - and ultimately paid a heavy price. Town began to play some of their best stuff of the season and into injury time gained their reward , snatching a game that they should have comfortably won. Harden sent over a lovely free kick on 90 minutes and Lundstram rose like a salmon to plant a firm header home for 3-3. Wed, 21 November 2007 Denbigh Town Reserves 0 Mochdre Sports 3 Denbigh's second string continue to find life in the Clwyd Premier League a tough nut to crack , writes Utility Reporter. Despite turning out their strongest eleven for a number of weeks , the tide could not be turned. Both sides began the match with intent , registering efforts on goal within the first few minutes, Denbigh's first effort on goal came after a fine flowing move with Matt Toole releasing Mike Lundstrum down the right, he burst into the box and shot across the face of goal. On fourteen minutes Tom Sheridan pounced on a loose ball in the box, but his shot was parried by the Mochdre keeper and the rebound could not be forced home. Within 3 minutes Sports were ahead, Barry Grimshaw netting from close range. Both sides continued to press but Mochdre held the territorial advantage with the help of the wind. However Denbigh had their best period of the half in the final ten minutes, a Tom Sheridan header from a Gareth John Williams free kick went across the face of goal, somehow missing Lee Mason's despairing lunge for the safety of a goal kick. Right on half time Denbigh had another good chance, but Mike Lundstrum's free kick was safely gathered by the visiting keeper. Mochdre flew out of the blocks at half time and only a last ditch tackle by Johnny Bowen prevented Mochdre's Grimshaw having a free strike on goal, the visitors continued to press for the second goal, having two headers first saved and then cleared. Denbigh managed to effect some play and in quick succession Williams had a shot blocked, whilst Toole blasted high and wide. As the hour approached more possession for Mochdre proved decisive as following some slack defending Jay Goddard found enough space to fire home Sports' second goal. The Reserves needed a quick reposte and efforts from Lundstrum (one hitting the post) and Chris Hughes gave Town some hope. Simon Mackie replaced Darren Nixon as Denbigh went for broke with Lundstrum's chip from the right being tipped over by Mochdre's custodian and from the subsequent corner Lee Mason headed over. As the half wore on Denbigh continued to dominate possession and territory without getting close enough to put significant pressure on the Mochdre goal. On the break Mochdre continued to give Denbigh plenty to think about and with better finishing from Grimshaw they could have been out of sight. Another substitution saw Brett Jones replacing Matt Toole, but still Denbigh could not break down the visitor's back line, the closest effort being a Mike Lundstrum header which was cleared off the line. Seconds later the match was over as after another incisive break from Sports, coupled with some poor defending saw Goddard smash home his second. The last rites were now being read as another Denbigh free kick came to nothing and the referee brought the game to a close. Sat, 10 November 2007 Back To Back Wins for Resilient Denbigh Town Bounce-back-ability ensured Denbigh Town made it a run of six unbeaten as they twice came from behind to beat a youthful Buckley Town outfit by the odd goal in five , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Now lying fifth in the Cymru Alliance , Dyer will be delighted to record back to back wins and will be pleased at the never say die attitude shown by his troops. The weather may have been dismal but the hosts were hot from the off , with Ian Evans going close almost from the kick off , slicing over when well placed - and then Mike Lundstram got his head to a Kenny Burgess cross. With the wind at their back , the home side were all over Buckley like a rash and Burgess went agonisingly close to an opener on 8 minutes when his 30 yarder was superbly tipped over by Dave Vickers in the visitors' goal. But counting chickens is unwise in football and if Denbigh thought the Bucks were there for the taking , they were in for a shock. A rare Buckley sortie brought the opening goal and it was courtesy of a handball decision against Mark Orme - harsh some (though not I )might say - and up stepped Nick Whiteley to send Hulse the wrong way and the visitors were whooping. ![]() Tony Davies , watched by Luke O'Mahoney + Tommy Harrison Dyer's men looked stunned and the young Flintshire eleven began to grow in confidence. Former Llandyrnog midfielder Miles Todd , the pick of the visitors , began to stroke the ball around and he sought out hitman Alan Dawson who was unluckly to see his effort deflected away , with Denbigh's defenders looking around for a flag. Then on 25 minutes Todd ran helter skelter towards goal , only for the brave Hulse to put his body on the line and gather with Rob Williams steaming in. Todd & Whiteley The Central Park brigade began to settle and Harrison stamped his authority on proceedings, and , aided by Burgess , slipped in Lundstram but visiting custodian Vickers stood up well and the danger was cleared. With Buckley now limited to the counter , Town were picking up the bits on the edge of the visitors' box and Hobson sent in two strikes , the first snaffled by Vickers and the other inching wide of an upright. Town received instruction at half time and a minute after the break were deservedly level. Hobson , the engine , swung over a pinpoint cross from a free kick out on the right , the ball eventually reaching Harrison at the far post , who took a touch and slammed home. ![]() Tommy Harrison in action. It was now all Denbigh. Lundstram set up Hobson who sidefooted wide. Then Adam Jones swung over a sweetie which Vickers plucked out of the air superbly , but on 55 minutes Buckley stunned the home side once again and found themselves with an unlikely lead courtesy of an offside looking Alan Dawson. The big man slipped the ball beyond glovesman Hulse after being put in the clear by Miles Todd - and the Bucks sensed an unlikely three points. Dyer's men retaliated and little Ryan Harden had an effort cleared off the line after a bizarre passage of play after Lundstram went on a mazy run, but then at the other end the visitor's Mark Williams shot over when well placed in a now rare breakaway. But Denbigh were level on 64 minutes when another great run by Lundstram - he had an exceptional game - and the fleet footer's latest dash into the box was brought to an end illegally and Burgess slammed home to give the hosts parity. There was now only one team likely to win it and Denbigh grabbed a decisive lead four minutes later , set up by the busy Burgess. The winger created a little bit of room , sent over a cross towards Tony Davies at the far post and the big man's header fell to Mark Orme in front of the net and the Town skipper smashed it home gleefully. Burgess should have sealed it on 80 minutes when put in the clear but a cruel bobble intervened and the ball flew over. ![]() Vickers gathers the ball off the head of Davies Dyer threw on O'Mahoney and Matt Toole , and the youngsters linked up to test Vickers as Buckley clung on - but the game was finally put beyond them as a committed Miles Todd saw a second yellow and subsequent red - and the points were claimed by Denbigh. Denbigh Town Reserves found the quality of Beaumaris a little too hard to handle , writes Peter Glynn. The 3rd Round encounter was a repeat of last year's NWCFA Junior Cup match up , but wheras the 2006 encounter was decided by penalties , this was settled as a contest after the first 45 minutes. Missing a number of key men , Town matched the Islansers stride for stride for the first half hour , but three quickfire goals for Biw just before the break put the tie beyond the visitors. Another five goals in the second stanza were conceded as Town threw themselves forward in search of a goal , but the nearest they came was when Matt Toole hit a post in the last minute. Sat, 3 November 2007 One Hit Wonder Steals the Points Denbigh Town secured their first away win of the season with a solitary goal which claimed all three points at Glantraeth , writes Peter Glynn at Cae Trefdraeth. Now on an unbeaten run of five , it was important for Dyer's Denbigh to start turning draws into wins - and this they did courtesy of a 34th minute Tommy Harrison strike which was worthy of winning any game. It was possibly hard on the hosts who may think they had been mugged in this nip and tuck encounter - possibly pickpocketed would be a more accurate charge to levy. Whereas Town bossed much of the first stanza , Traeth edged the second. And the hosts will point to an incident right at the death when they felt a spot kick should have been awarded them , after Emyr Rowlands hit terra firma when almost clear on goal. The match began with both keepers in immediate action , Gareth Roberts for Traeth pouching a Harrison free kick and then Hulse for Denbigh getting down well to save a firm strike. Kevin Evans opened his legs , fed Adam Jones and his cross found the head of Mike Lundstram which zipped over. Glan replied with Kevin Roberts and Emyr Rowlands combining on a breakaway , but impressive John Roberts was quick to clear the danger. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gatfield + Roberts + Adam Jones Jamie Hobson tested the Traeth keeper direct from a free kick , which was gathered at the second attempt and then Mike Lundstram was desperate to see his shot on 8 minutes inch just wide. Next Hulse - he had an immaculate game - had to gobble up a swinging cross-shot and then a minute later only sterling work from Town's Mark Orme prevented Emyr Rowlands getting on the end of a long ball. Big Islander Paul Tilbury got his head onto a corner as the hosts now upped the ante and Dyer must then have cursed his luck when Town lost midfielder Kevin Evans to a nasty angle injury which required a visit to casualty. Tilbury again headed over when well placed and the hosts must have begun to ponder whether it was to be their day. ![]() ![]() ![]() Orme + Harden + Hobson They escaped a moment later when Lundstram was flagged offside from a superb through ball by work-a-holic Jamie Hobson , and then sub Burgess played in Lundstram again but the Denbighite was left bewildered to see his goal bound effort hacked off the line. Burgess was now in charge and a wicked free kick on the half hour found Tommy Harrison who almost broke the deadlock with a fine shot. Back bounced Traeth and Hulse had to dive full length to palm a Rowlands effort round the post but Burgess was on fire and his great run set up Ian Evans but the poacher failed to connect as the goal beckoned. But a minute later the Central Park mob had pinched a lead. It was that man Harrison who drove a 27 yard free kick into the back of the net and Town were in dreamland. Glan responded by forcing a corner but Town scented a second and Burgess picked out a lurking Ian Evans at the far post but his nod just scraped over. Little Ryan Harden swung over a corner from which Harrison almost prodded home and next a great Adam Jones cross evaded everyone when surely the merest of touches would have given Denbigh some breathing space. Half time came a little too soon and Glantraeth came out full of fight and determination with Hulse at his best to pull a cross out of thin air with both Rowlands boys waiting to pounce. Denbigh were now under the cosh , clearing a free kick and corner in quick succession , but a breakaway by speedster Lundstram released Harrison but the Denbigh man shot wide. Gatfield headed a cross-shot behind for another Traeth flag kick and Nigel Barry then had an effort that failed to trouble Hulse when well placed. Yet at the other end Harrison , a constant danger on the counter , planted one wide after a Gatfield cross found him in space on the hour mark. Hulse was excellent once again to snaffle an inswinging free kick , then Ian Evans went on the rampage , closely followed by Lundstram but both men were unlucky to see their efforts cleared to safety. It was now an end to end tussle with both teams failing to apply that clinical touch in front of goal , and of the two glovesmen, it was Hulse who was the busier , saving an effort on 71 minutes and a minute later energetically grasping a cross from a flag kick. With time running out , Dyer threw on Steve Jones for Ian Evans and the move almost paid off when the veteran went up for a free kick but Roberts got down well to keep his side in it. Lundstram must wonder what he has to do as on 89 minutes his fine touch took the ball past Roberts and his effort trickled along the goal-line to safety with most already acknowledging a goal.
Lee Mason Yet at the death came the seminal moment of the match. Emyr Rowlands latched onto the ball in the Town box and Lee Mason managed to get toe to ball before both men collided. With everyone holding their breath in anticipation of a referee Trigg decision , Denbigh were relieved to see the whistleblower wave away any penalty claim - Town were home and hose with the three points. Sat, 27 October 2007 Evans Effort Secures Point For Town Defences came out on top as evenly matched Gresford Athletic and Denbigh Town fought out a 1-1 draw at Clappers Lane , writes Peter Glynn. Both teams are struggling for goals this term , though with two goals in the first six minutes it looked like we were in for a cracker , but ultimately spectators were left frustrated with both teams falling short in the business area of the pitch. ![]() Dean watches head tennis + The Brothers Evans Town like to make things difficult for themselves , and for the second successive Saturday found themselves behind after barely getting their boots laced up. There was a mere 90 seconds on the stopwatch when Gresford inched their noses in front , and it was Owen Roberts who finished sweetly following a sleepy mix up in the visitor's defence , which started with Tony Davies knocking a defensive ball back to Jamie Hulse in the Town goal. The glovesman's kick could only find whippet Danny Brown, and the youngster fed in Roberts and the rest is history. ![]() Dean & Tim at Half Time + Gatty On A Run The Central Park outfit retaliated and it was on 6 minutes and after a period of sustained pressure that they drew level. Matt Gatfield , who loves to gallop down the line , took a long throw on the right , and Lundstram rose to flick his header to Ian Evans in front of the onion bag and the goal poacher snaffled his fifth of the campaign. 'Twas all Town at this juncture and on 15 minutes Adam Jones loped off on a run , aided and abetted by Kevin Evans , and the full back's perfect cross somehow eluded everyone before being bundled behind for a flag kick. Jamie Hobson + Kenny Burgess Next Ryan Harden played a short worked corner to Ian Evans , who returned the compliment , the ball eventually falling to Kenny Burgess on the edge of the box but his firm effort inched wide of an upright. Another Harden corner on 25 minutes was headed over by Tony Davies as Town began to dominate , but at the other end Hulse had to punch clear under severe pressure when Danny Brown sent over a wicked cross after a lightening break-away orchestrated by former Welsh Premier star Alan Williams. Suddenly the visitors went off the boil and it was the experienced former Cefn Druids playmaker Williams who began to put his foot on the ball , knocking it to feet and generally reducing Town to the long ball game. The fleet-footed Lundstram looked menacing on two breakouts , and from one the speed merchant had a burst that took him past his marker but was unfortunate to see his pull back hacked to safety with Hobson steaming in. A strong claim for a penalty was laughed off by Referee Trigg when the increasingly busy Lundstram was blatantly knocked off his feet in the Gresford box , but at the other end Matthias was unlucky not to grab a second for Attics when he connected with a Steff Edwards cross , and Hulse was relieved to see the ball glance wide. The second stanza was much the same , with long periods now being dominated by the midfield fraternity, but Ian Evans will count himself unlucky to see one effort deflected away for a corner , whilst Lundstram and Burgess combined to release Mark Orme who had steamed up to add his weight on a breakaway. Tony Davies re-appeared in the box to head wide from two flag kicks , but the Clappers Lane side then caused chaos in Town's defence when the classy Steff Edwards threatened to go all the way with a solo sortie. ![]() Lundstram Header + O'Mahoney Steams In Gresford threw on Jonny Taylor on the hour and it was the youngster who went closest to breaking what was fast becoming deadlock. Taylor found the ball at feet near to centre spot , rode a challenge before coolly chipping from well outside the box and the back pedalling Hulse was fortunate to gather after seeing the effort bounce up off the bar. O'Mahoney and Harrison replaced Lundstram and Gatfield , the former bludgeoning his way forward but shooting straight into keeper Gareth Rowlands' breadbox , whilst the latter had a sharp volley blocked off from 6 yards by a well marshalled Gresford defence. Harden put in a lovely ball that fell between Ian Evans and O'Mahoney as Town pulled out the stops to try to nick the points, but at the other end Hulse had to get down sharply to pouch a 89th minute effort that could have won the game for the hosts. ![]() Action Shots Denbigh Town: Jamie Hulse , Adam Jones , Matt Gatfield , Mark Orme , Tony Davies , Kevin Evans , Kenny Burgess , Jamie Hobson , Ryan Harden , Ian Evans , Mike Lundstram. Sun, 21 October 2007 ![]() Flint Too Sharp For Reserves Denbigh Town Reserves suffered a 2-0 reverse at razor sharp Flint Town Reserves , reports Peter Glynn at Cae y Castell. Town have faced some stern challenges this term and many consider the Flintshire side to be their toughest opponents to date. A bobbly pitch does not lend itself to the beautiful game but every team must adapt and it was the Castlemen who started the stronger , passing the ball well to feet , quickly and accurately. In Phill Lloyd , they possess a speedy skill-merchant , and the youngster was dictating play early doors. One effort from Lloyd tested Gaz Smith , and the Denbigh custodian had to pull out a flying save to turn his rasper over the bar for the save of the game. Sheridan's men began to get more interested after safely negotiating the first twenty minutes, but were finding it tough to puncture the Flinters back line. But on 29 minutes the hosts outfit sprang forward and after a period of sustained pressure , Denbigh fell behind. A lovely ball came in from the right and it was danger man Phill Lloyd who latched onto it and blasted home from the edge of the box. ![]() Gaz Smith: Diving Save + Jamie Clayton: On Overtime Full back Ian David Evans found himself in Disneyland after receiving a boot in the head , and Jamie Clayton had to work overtime to keep out a now rampant Flint mob. Justin Jones combined with Darren Nixon who went on a dangerous sortie as Town started to fight back , but Flint were a menace on the breakaway as Town pressed forward and almost snatched another. Denbigh started to pose a few questions , and began to have most of the game up to the break but without really threatening to register on the scoresheet. Denbigh were again quite active after the restart , with Matt Toole causing problems for the home side but the Central Park side were still finding it tough to break through , such was the quality of Flint's back line and the game was started to look as if one goal would win it. Then on 80 minutes came the defining moment of the match , when the experienced Chris Hughes played a ball to Toole who lobbed home only to see Referee Boyd rule the effort out for a high kick from the pass - a fifty fifty decision that went against the visitors. ![]() Hughes: Combined With Toole + Toole: Goal Ruled Out With one minute left on the clock , Flint won possession on the edge of Denbigh's box , and a shot came in which was parried by glovesman Smith only for Lee Molyneux to net the rebound to clinch the game. Sat, 20 October 2007 ![]() Evans Double Delights Denbigh Revived Denbigh Town bounced back from conceding a first minute goal to record a 2-1 win over Llanfair PG in the Cymru Alliance League Cup First Round, writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Two second half strikes from Town's Kevin Evans avenged an early season 1-0 home defeat at the hands of the Anglesey outfit and Manager Dyer believes the result and performance will kick start a stuttering season. ![]() Kevin Evans in Action: On The Ball and Bombing Forward But it was the visitors who hit the ground running and in particular Jason Harvey , the Anglesey outfit's trickly midfield maestro , who popped up in the Denbigh box to put his side ahead after only 90 seconds , capitalising on a slip coupled with hesitation in the Town back line. Gradually Denbigh began to find their feet , and Ryan Harden received the ball from a short corner , whipped over a quality cross into the box which flicked Ian Evans' head before being poked wide by the stretching Mike Lundstram. Jamie Hulse was called upon after 15 minutes , firstly turning over another Harvey effort , and then to be alert to pouch a Neil Hughes fizzer. Town were becoming frustrated with the flagwaver as the Llanfair defence stepped up to repeatedly catch Ian Evans and Lundstram offside but stuck at it and Kevin Evans nearly set up an equaliser. The midfielder received the ball in space , shaped to shoot but feinted a ball to Lundstram whose blocked shot fell to Ian Evans , but the hitman banged it straight at Ben Heald in the Llan goal. ![]() Mike Lundstram: Ran Himself to a Standstill On 24 minutes Hulse again came to the rescue from Jason Harvey and his shot from outside of the box produced a flying save to keep it down to one. On 28 minutes it was Town's turn to curse their luck. A freekick by Kenny Burgess found the head of central defender Tony Davies and his powerful header struck wood with Heald well beaten. The second stanza saw Denbigh more at the races and it was on 50 minutes that the home side made the game level. Excellent work from Lundstram released Adam Jones and his quality ball into the box was met by the head of Kevin Evans who gave Heald no chance. Then Burgess put in the adventurous Adam Jones whose first time shot was desperately blocked off at the expense of a corner with Town now looking to grab a lead. ![]() Kenny Burgess: Busy all Afternoon Llanfair are a never say die outfit and back they bounced back on 65 minutes , when Richard Owen had a great opportunity but shot just over when well placed. Captain Mark Orme had to run off a tweak on his groin after stretching for a ball , and Jamie Hobson , running his blood to water , fed a sweetie to the eager Lundstram but again , Heald was on hand to snaffle the ball bravely. But on 70 minutes Kevin Evans grabbed Town's second and a precious lead after a great little build up , involving Tommy Harrison and Adam Jones. The ball fell to Evans on the edge of the box and his low blaster hit the net to edge the home side ahead. World Class action kept Llanfair in it as Denbigh went for the throat. A great Burgess cross was met with a towering header under pressure from Tony Davies and Lundstram got on the end of it and was head in hands to see Ben Heald tip the ball over the bar for one of the best saves you will see this season. ![]() Adam Jones + Luke O'Mahoney Town started to look comfortable as both teams were running on fumes , such was the effort put in by both sets of players. On 85 minutes Harrison lobbed one over the bar , then Luke O'Mahoney threatened to go all the way and then only a timely Simon Giddings foot stopped the same man putting Lundstram in the clear. Hulse was a virtual spectator but he saw yellow for time wasting , closely followed by Matt Gatfield for feigning deafness when asked to hurry it up. At the end of the day it was a deserved win for Dyer's men , courtesy of an excellent second half performance. Sun, 14 October 2007 ![]() Vale Derby Fails to Ignite A nail-biting 1-1 draw in a tense encounter ensured that local bragging rights were shared between Denbigh and Ruthin this week, writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Local derbys tend to be either fiery or dour and drab affairs. This falls somewhere between the two , with the contest more or less over after the first quarter of the game , which provided the goal action and most of the enterprising play. The visitors were quick off the mark , with former Bangor City youngster Gary Ellison popping up in the home box on 2 minutes to fire just wide of a post , with the Denbigh defence looking at each other for an explanation. Dyer's men settled into a pattern and a Ryan Harden ball fed Luke O'Mahoney who went on a strong gallop , before crossing into the box - but Ruthin's keeper Jeremy Porter was happy to see the ball bypassing the incoming Denbigh forwards with his defence backpedalling. But Porter was less happy on the quarter on an hour mark when a Burgess pinpointer of a free kick picked out big Tony Davies at the far post , and the central defender sent a firm header into the far corner to inch the Central Park side ahead. ![]() Locomotive: Lundstram + Chaser: Burgess goes after one. The Ruths responded well and turned up the pressure and their leveller on 25 minutes was a mixture of poor defending and good finishing. It was the useful Gary Ellison who pounced on some hesitation in the Denbigh box and the 18 year old smashed home from eight yards to give his side parity. Both sides now glared at each other for a while, and with both teams looking comfortable on the ball without really threatening their opponent's onion bag, one wondered if another goal would arrive. A wicked Adam Jones cross into the visitor's box could have brought some reward but more superb work by Jez Porter and Rob Render prevented a strike from locomotive Lundstram who was steaming in at the far stick. Home manager Dyer added Tommy Harrison at the half time break for Denbigh engine Paul Edwards who had limped off, but it was Ruthin who started the second stanza in the ascendancy , with the dangerous Simon Holloway in despair to see his fine shot edge wide with host's keeper Hulse nowhere. ![]() Oh , My! O'Mahoney Rampaging + Burgess: Free Kick More midfield inaction ensued as the game began to peter out , though Denbigh's Harrison tested Porter with a quality cross and the Ruthin glovesman was then at his very best to hold onto a powerful Luke O'Mahoney effort towards the end of proceedings. Sun, 14 October 2007 ![]() Penalty King: Hughes + Boneshaker: Bowen Fighting Reserves Out Gunned By Aston Denbigh Town Reserves finally succumbed to an impressive Aston Park side after dominating for long periods , writes Peter Glynn. Town will possibly be kicking themselves after missing a number of opportunities to find the target - and with a little more care may have avenged an early season 5-1 deficit against high flying Rangers. Aston were first to threaten and big Jamie Clayton did well to block off a shot that edged wide of evergreen Chris Brown's right hand post. With Chris Hughes holding up the ball well upfront , Town began to play some neat stuff , and on 7 minutes took a lead through goal-a-holic Matt Toole. Bone-rattler Jonny Bowen played in quicksilver Gaz John Williams who skinned his man before feeding the lurking Tom Sheridan. The tall youngster switched play to Darren Nixon who released Gugs Roberts to bombed down the line before picking out Toole at the near post and the quiet assassin's deft header went in at the far post. Town were dealing with what Aston could lump up to them but suffered a scare on 11 minutes when glovesman Brown had to get down to one effort and the same man was relieved that another Rangers pot shot thudded off the bar and to safety. Rangers were upping the pressure but Denbigh were also creating in an evens-stevens contest. Impressive Darren Nixon put Toole one on one with Aston's custodian Craig Williams who produced a great save to push the ball to the feet of Gugs Roberts , who was then cruelly denied by the whistleblower for offside. Next Gaz John had a one on one chance after Tom Sheridan dinked a ball through , but his drilled effort hit Williams' shoulder and rebounded to safety. The same man was bursting past his full back for fun and his fine cross was met with a superb first touch from Toole which took him past a desperate Williams. Toole hit it sweetly enough but the goalbound effort was cleared off the line with Rangers wondering how they were still in the game. Next Man of the Match Lee Mason fancied a go at goal and his 18 yarder was palmed away for the save of the game by a now shaken Aston side. Just after the half hour mark Aston were relieved to find themselves back in it when a cross from the right was deflected in off a post by Sam Davies- and then on the stroke of half time the host's grabbed a second with a finish from Lee Gormley from seven yards to edge cruelly ahead. The second half was an even affair and Town almost snatch parity when Tom Sheridan fed in Chris Hughes whose sweet lob was tipped away for a flag kick. But at the other end Aston showed their mental strength up front and all but killed the game when a fine header from Gary McConley beat the flying Chris Brown. Jonny Bowen gave notice with that Rangers were not going to have it all their own way with one bone cruncher of a tackle , and another evil Gaz John cross , this time from a free kick , was whipped in , and Tom 'Crouch' Sheridan was left open mouthed to see his great header strike the bar with the home keeper flailing at air. An error let in Aston's Chris Boulden for their fourth as the Denbigh youngsters threw themselves forward to retrieve the game and their effort was somewhat rewarded when Gaz John found himself dumped unfairly on his backside in the box and Chris Hughes , after giving the keeper the eye , sent him the wrong way. Two goalies would not have saved that one. Simon Mackie put an effort over , Darren Nixon had a screamer that hit the side netting and Gaz John thundered a drive just off target as Town just refused to lie down. Toole then had a shout for another penalty airily waved away but at the death a fifth from a now shoot on sight Sam Davies , his second of the match , settled it. Sat, 6 October 2007 ![]() Revived Denbigh Secure Draw At Flint Determined Denbigh Town bounced back with an essentially positive performance at Flint , sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Cae y Castell , writes Peter Glynn. Having suffered the slings and arrows in last week's drubbing at Prestatyn , Dyer's Denbigh were looking for firstly a performance and secondly a result - and the manager will be pleased to have got both from his starting eleven. Notable absentees included Tommy Harrison (ban) and Tony Davies ( injury). A big boost had been received pre match in that Davies has again committed himself to the Central Park outfit , turning down a move to Bala Town who had sought his signature with a 7 day approach. Back to the game. The first 45 minutes was much of a muchness , with Flint shading it inasmuch that Jamie Hulse was the slightly busier of the goalkeepers. Matt Gatfield and Adam Jones were mainly pinned into defensive duties and their trademark runs into opposition territory were few and far between. Flint looked useful on occasions up front but found Mark Orme was at his imperious best , snuffing out most of what the Castlemen could muster. Partnered by the impressive Roberts , Denbigh looked determined that none shall pass after last week's leakage. Kevin Evans showed his class early in the piece when finding a speedy Mike Lundstram and the Flint keeper was mightily relieved when his effort flew wide of a post. Man machine Paul Edwards , who will run all day unless you warn him , was the busiest player on the park - one minute surging towards goal , the next effecting a last ditch tackle to deny a sure goal. With a barren first half , a rumour swept round the ground that this had nil-nil written all over it. Gatfield suffered a recurrence at the break and had to be replaced. Then Manager Dyer shuffled his deck , trading worker bee Ian Evans for Luke O'Mahoney , who was chomping at the bit on the bench. This gave Town a more aggressive and physical approach up front. It was the young colossus who provided the moment of the match , when , as catalyst and instrument , he carved a mazy pathway through five desperate Silkmen , which elicited applause from all sides of the stadium. The Central Park brigade may have thought their chance had gone when Paul Edwards limped off with another knee injury ( his other one - I don't know how many he's got). Ryan Harden put in a full ninety minutes and some of his touches and dink balls are a delight to lovers of the game. His imagination in the second stanza threatened at times to unlock the door that Flint all too often slammed in the face of Denbigh's marksmen. A drawn game was the fairest result and when the goals came , they were at the time when most people were thinking of their tea. Denbigh thought they had won it on 89 minutes when Kenny Burgess started and finished a sweet passage of play. Burgess picked up the ball on the left , played in O'Mahoney and Lundstram , then popped up on the right and swept it home - much joy and it looked as if the visitors had bagged an unlikely 3 points. But almost from the restart , Flint were level. An aggressive burst into the Denbigh half earned the Silkmen a throw. Young Flint defender Stefan Halewood received the ball at his feet outside the box and he hit a rising shot that thumped into the back of the net to give the scoreline some justice. Dyer will be pleased that his team has bounced back from that painful defeat last week at Bastion Road. Without doubt this is a morale boosting result and performance and the Central Park club will now be looking forward to taking on Ruthin Town in what will be a facinating derby encounter. Sat, 6 October 2007 ![]() Williams Double Sees Off Dangerous Druidion. Cup Frenzy hit Denbigh on Saturday as Town's youngsters swept into the Third Round of the NWCFA Junior Cup with a 2-1 win over useful Cerrigydrudion, writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. A Gaz John Williams brace had overturned an earlier Cerrigydrudion strike from big centre forward Jason Jones which was good enough to put Sheridan's charges in the hat that will hopefully lead them to Cup glory. Played in perfect conditions on a superb surface , both teams went at it from the off and the early action set the tone for a cracking end to end encounter. And it was Cerrig who threatened to draw first blood as early as the 2nd minute when a swerving freekick from Cerrig's Jason Jones was acrobatically palmed away to safety by home glovesman Gaz Smith. The Central Park outfit hit back and Lee Mason showed his composure to pick out Keith Jones wide on the right. The long-limbed youth took a touch , went past one , went past another and unleashed an effort which was fumbled by visiting keeper Alwyn Rowlands , the ball eventually falling to Gaz John Williams on the edge of the box , but his firm strike was hacked away for a corner as the Druids clung on. On the 13 minute mark Jonny Bowen collected the ball at the full back position and went on a surging run towards the Cerrig box , before laying it on to Darren Nixon whose sweet effort was turned round a post spectacularly by the impressive Rowlands. ![]() Nixon: Running The Show + Bowen : Surging Town almost opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark , when Steffan Tomos produced a great cross from a flag kick which by-passed everyone except a lurking Keith Jones on the edge of the box. The intelligent Jones played a sneaky lob ball back into the mix and Lee Mason's flick header was cleared off the line with custodian Rowlands well beaten. But the visitors are a dangerous outfit and on 24 minutes took a lead courtesy of sloppy defensive play from the Denbigh back line. Despite having two opportunities to clear , hesitation at the fateful moment allowed big Jason Jones to poke the ball past a stranded Gaz Smith to edge the visitors in front after a spell of pressure. A swerving freekick from Gaz John Williams almost brough an equaliser on 30 minutes but Town did finally gain parity as half time approached. Darren Nixon showed quality and determination to win the ball in the middle of the park, then bear down on goal before laying it on for Williams to take a touch before clinically finding the back of the net. A minute later Williams hit the keeper when well placed and then Nixon , who was running the show for fun , scraped the post with a peach. The second stanza continued in the same vein with Town creating most of the clear cut chances , though the Druids were causing problems on the break. Steffan Tomos weaved a spell of magic on 60 minutes out on the left wing, before finding Nixon whose snapshot was pouched by Rowlands. Nixon was as busy as a bee in the centre of the paddock and he played a one-two with quicksilver Tomos before unleashing a shot , but punched the air in frustration to see his great effort inch wide with everyone ready to applaud a goal. But it was mere respite for the Drudion as Town finally edged their noses in front , courtesy of a twice taken penalty. Gaz John was brought to terra firma by a wayward Cerrig foot but the same man hit the first spot kick straight at keeper Rowlands , only for whistleblower Perez to point for the penalty to be retaken. Rowlands was then desperately unlucky to save the second effort only to palm the ball to the feet of Williams a yard out , and even my maiden aunt would not have missed from that position. Cerrigydrudion now chased the game but were guilty of a little profligacy in front of goal as they squandered three excellent opportunities to take the game into extra time , most created by wonderboy Hedd Williams who was causing headaches for Denbigh with his silky skills and quick turn of pace. On the break Town also continuted to carve out chances which with a little more composure may have made the game safe. Si Mackie scraped a post with a header from a corner. Then Matt Toole lobbed a stranded Rowlands after excellent work from Gugs Roberts and another Gaz John blockbuster was forced away in desperation as Town sought to put the game to rest. But then at the death Cerrig thought they had got an equaliser but Gaz Smith was alert to pull out an excellent save , tipping a rising piledriver over the bar to ensure Town's progress. Sun, 23 September 2007 ![]() Draw Fair Result as Town Hold Trefy Local derbies are rarely boring affairs and so it proved at the Village Hall Ground when Denbigh Town Reserves fought out a 1-1 draw with Trefnant , writes Peter Glynn. Bragging rights and league points were up for grabs as neighbour met neighbour in a spicy encounter that saw two red cards along with two quality strikes. Denbigh had a bright opening and were causing problems and early on the Villagers were fortunate to see one richochet loop beyond the keeper onto the bar for what would have been a bizarre own goal. Town's corners and set pieces were causing mayhem , with Adam Owen putting in the right sort of quality from which first Lee Mason headed onto the bar , and then soon after Chris Brown , Tom Sheridan and Jamie Clayton also went close as the Central Park brigade sensed a goal. Mason went close to forcing an own goal after superb defending on the edge of the Village box but suddenly the Trefnant boys stiffened up their resolve and began to force the issue. A decent midfield battle ensued , with Kevin James completing some excellent work in the centre with partner big Tom Sheridan. ![]() Justin Jones (Captain) & The Returning Jonny Bowen Town were missing key men Gaz John Williams , Si Mackie and hamstrung Chris Hughes but at 0-0 at the break were showing good confidence on a tricky playing surface. The restart saw matters spicing up somewhat as Sheridan came more into the game , and Chris Brown holding up the ball well for the space-seeking Matt Toole to exploit. But it was the hosts who edged ahead on 55 minutes and it came from a corner. Jamie Davies found himself unmarked on the back post , came out to collect the ball , shaped to shoot with his left but feinted it onto his right and slammed home via the underside of the crossbar. A quality effort. Trefnant were now in the ascendency , with Town going a little bit flat after their setback. Excellent home defending was keeping the Denbigh mob at arm's length but it was another flag kick that was to result in a goal , this time from the visitors. A wicked corner on 75 minutes was somehow cleared in a panic for a throw in , which arrived at the feet of predator Matt Toole. The hitman pulled the ball onto his right peg and curled it into the right hand top corner from just outside the box to bring the game level. Things turned scrappy as both sets of players found ball retention a tough ask , as the pace of the game had sapped energy. Maybe it had sapped a few brain cells. A double foul on Kevin James brought on the Battle of the Handbags of windmill proportions between Kevin James and Graham Owen , with both eventually seeing red after they had run out of steam. Twas a pity as the game had hardly had a nasty tackle , and was played in the correct spirit - hard but fair. The final moments were now played out with Trefnant if anything slightly the better for ten a-side , though Toole may count himself unfortunate to be ruled offside when clean through at the death. On reflection , the 1-1 scoreline was a fair one. Tony Sheridan was pleased with his team's performance. " Overall the team played well , and if we'd taken our chances on set pieces in the first half , it may have been different. But I am happy with point , especially after the sending off. We have had to come from behind on a number of occasions this year and we have shown a lot of fight. We are also mixing it up a bit more this year , we have to in this higher league. Justin Jones and Jamie Clayton did well for us at the back , Justin had a shout for man of the match but in the end it just went to Lee Mason who deserved it for his performance." Sat, 22 September 2007 ![]() Denbigh Clamber Over Mynydd Mynydd Isa felt the force of young Luke O'Mahoney as revitalised Denbigh Town recorded a 3-0 victory to lift them into sixth spot in the Cymru Alliance , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. After two disappointing results , Town were determinted to take full advantage of an underperforming Isa outfit but left it until the second half to stamp their superiority on proceedings. After a barren first 45 minutes , the game sprang into life on the 50th minute and it was Kenny Burgess who picked the Mountainmen's lock , playing in a rampaging Luke O'Mahoney. The boy mountain took the ball on his chest and slipped it under the on-rushing Isa custodian , Aaron Tyrer to edge the home side ahead. The same man added a second a few minutes later on 55 minutes when Paul Edwards , Denbigh's man of the match , found him with a long through ball which O'Mahoney lifted over the Mynydd glovesman to all but kill the game. ![]() Paul Edwards and Ian Evans both went close. With the visitors now desperately seeking a reply , Town played some of their sweetest football , and the pace of Lundstram and the strength of O'Mahoney was causing havoc in the Mynydd backline when on the counter. One such breakaway found Tommy Harrison in the box on 90 minutes but with just Tyrer to beat , the influential midfielder had his legs chopped from under him by the subsequently red-carded Stuart Woods , and it was left to Kenny Burgess to tuck away the resultant penalty to give the scoreline a modicum of reality. If Edwards was man of the match , then Kevin Evans was a close second. His overall involvement ensured a quick tempo and will to win , qualities that the Central Park side had been lacking in recent weeks. Harrison was somewhat profligate in front of the onion bag , electing to shoot expansively on a number of occasions rather than play in his eager front men who sensed that their opponents were there for the taking. Hulse was a mere spectator for the majority of the game and efforts that were pinged his way either ghosted wide of the post or sailed over head to safety. Tommy Harrison , Mark Orme and Paul Edwards Harden replaced a groin-clutching Tony Davies at the beginning of the second stanza and the little magician added that extra intelligence with which Isa could not really cope. Burgess was ever an outlet as Town weathered what little Isa could muster , and 3-0 was possibly a fair result , with Simon Hulse and Chris Boulton the pick of the visitors. Town now turn their attention to Prestatyn Town away - and fully expect a tougher battle against one of the division's form sides. Sun, 16 September 2007 ![]() Cup Fever as Toole Goal Frenzy Ensures Progress. Concussive Matt Toole hit a hat-trick as Denbigh Town Reserves progressed to the Second Round of the North Wales Coast FA Junior Cup with a 4-2 victory over Penrhyn United at Central Park, writes Peter Glynn from his sick bed. The first ten minutes was all Sheridan's youngsters as Town played neat , tidy football , finding their men and setting up opportunities for Si Mackie and Matt Toole , who were both unfortunate not to register early doors. ![]() Toole: Deadly United suddnly found themselves back in it as the Central Park brigade took their foot off the pedal - and Town paid the price when a long ball over the top presented Wednesdays with a shot at goal , which was scorched into the net from the edge of the box by Matt Williams after the first effort was well saved by Town custodian Gaz Smith. Town got their back heads up and decent play presented Denbigh with an equaliser. Tom Sheridon found the ball at his feet out wide and he laid the ball into the path of on rushing Toole , who had found himself some excellent space. The striker ran on and planted the ball past the Penrhyn keeper to earn parity. A misplaced Sheridan pass then allowed United another long ball clearance which put the Denbigh defence under pressure and a clinical strike from Phil George had the visitors ahead. Back bounced Denbigh as Steffan Tomos skipped along the touchline and rifled over a cross ball that was missed by the United glove-wearer - but Mackie pounced on the free ball , took a touch and fired into an empty onion bag. The Wednesdays are a ne'er say die bunch and Gaz Smith had to be alert as the visitors almost sneaked another lead But at the other end Toole could have had his second when put in one on one with the keeper but his effort edged wide. The second stanza saw the Town forwards combining really well , with Ben Stanway feeding a ball to Toole in the box, who immediately laid it to partner in crime Mackie. Mackie dinked one back to Toole who was head in hands as his swipe inched just wide. It was a respite only for the United outfit as the goal of the game gave Denbigh an edge. Adam Owen did the old one-two with Steffan Tomos on the left. Owen played it to Matt Toole on the bye line , whose initial cross was blocked off. Refusing to lie down , Toole pounced on the ball , took a touch and smashed it home from a tight angle. ![]() Steffan Tomos & Adam Owen: One-Two It should have been four moments later as Si Mackie slammed a penalty straight at the Wednesdays' keeper and that may have let in the visitors as it took a magnificent save from Gaz Smith , tipping a screamer onto the bar and pouching the rebound with boots a-flying , to keep Sheridan's boys ahead. United's keeper then pulled off a save of equal proportions when a Si Mackie cross was superbly headed towards the top corner by Keith Jones , but a fourth and decider was coming and it was goal merchant Toole who provided it. The youngster picked up the ball 25 yards out and did a McFadden - whoofing it into the back of the net with the United keeper helpless. Sun, 16 September 2007 Denbigh Town's Welsh Cup Dream Buried At Bala Denbigh Town succumbed to defeat as they took on Bala Town at Maes Tegid , with both local rivals serving up a spicy nine goal thriller in this Welsh Cup First Round encounter , writes Peter Glynn , back from Pisa. For long periods of the game it was nip and tuck as first it was Bala took hold of the game by it's proverbials , only for Denbigh to retaliate and take a deserved lead into the half time break. Bala began as expected - a no nonsense approach that has catapulted them to the top of the Cymru Alliance. Tony Davies had to be at his best as a Fisher burst on 5 minutes almost brought an opener , but the man mountain held firm to force the ball out for a flag kick. Denbigh began to settle and Kevin Evans wove a piece of magic that instinctively found a sibling lurking on the edge of the box , but brother Ian's first time swipe was blocked off. Bala are dangerous at set pieces and took a lead on 17 minutes from one , a free kick just outside of the visitor's box. Huw Price stepped up to give notice of the quality of the goals that were to be on offer with a superb effort that left Denbigh's glovesman Hulse rooted to the spot. It is said that Captains often lead by example and Denbigh Town have one such in Mark Orme. It was the gentle giant who charged forward into the Bala box when Town were awarded a flag kick on 28 minutes , and he was delighted to plant the ball home after a skirmish on the penalty spot. It was a joyous moment for the visiting supporters , bettered only by Tommy Harrison's rising bullet shot of a free kick out on the left from distance four minutes later , which almost broke the net , to give Dyer's Denbigh a lead. ![]() Orme: Skirmish --- Harrison: Volley It was the Central Park outfit who were playing the better stuff up to the break , but were unfortunate to lose Matt Gatfield on half time , and Bala took full advantage on their re-emergence onto the paddock. The Maes Tegid brigade are lethal if allowed to dominate and three goals in the space of eight minutes turned the tie on it's head as Denbigh released their grip on the home side's throat. Firstly Mark Griffiths poached a goal on the 47 minute mark , quickly followed by a Neil Fisher strike on 51 minutes to edge the Maes Tegid side ahead and then a Griffiths second to give Bala breathing space at 4-2. Quality goals all. Passing , movement and deadly fishing make Bala a tough proposition. Marc Griffiths The Central Park outfit weren't finished and a stunning swerving strike from 27 yards by Tommy Harrison , with a effort worthy of Serie A , brought his side to within touching distance at 4-3. The Man with the Whistle wasn't to be omitted from making his mark , and Harrison received a yellow for finickity reasons and Dyer had to send a message out for his charges to keep their discipline. As Denbigh pressed for the equaliser , Bala Town used their nous and broke quickly and with great effect. Neil Fisher on 73 minutes and Gethin Lloyd on 82 sealed the win for the home side with two such breakouts that made the scoreline look a little less close than the game probably deserved. Sat, 1 September 2007 ![]() Frustration As Town Slip To Home Defeat Disappointing Denbigh slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against hard working Llanfair PG , reports Peter Glynn at Central Park. Tim Dyer's outfit have been noted as slow starters in matches thus far this season and supporters were hopeful that a second half revival would break Town out of jail , having been punished by a Kevin Roberts strike a minute before the break , but it wasn't to be as the Anglesey side put up the shutters to claim the three points. ![]() There was little in the way of excitement in the first half , with Hulse the busier of the two glove-wearers but it was Mike Lundstram , the pick of the Town's players , who came closest to opening the scoring for Denbigh, when an Andy Booker cross ball fell to him on the edge of the box but Ben Heald was alert to pounce on the striker's effort. Then Tony Davies arrived in the box for a flag kick and his header almost found the net but a Pwll body deflected his goalbound effort inches wide. Llanfair were breaking out of defence quickly and the dangerous Carl Griffiths combined sweetly with Ian Burgess as the Islanders sought a lead but again , that man Tony Davies was on hand to force the ball wide at the expense of a corner. ![]() It was only a reprieve as the curse of half time struck just as Town were beginning to dominate proceedings and it was the move of the match that brought rewards for Pwll. Llanfair broke from the edge of the box from a headed clearance with the ball finding it's way to Tony Williams out wide on the right. The speed merchant ran thirty yards before cutting the ball back to Kevin Roberts who slipped it under Hulse to give the away side an advantage. The second stanza was more of the same in the way of over elaboration and lack of confidence on the ball by Town. Despite dominating the pitch , clear cut chances failed to materialise as Pwll parked the mini bus in the box and snuffed out the threat from the likes of Ian Evans and the busy Luke O'Mahoney. Dyer went three at the back in the hope of forcing an equaliser but it was all huff and puff with little reward as the game petered out to allow the Llanfairpwll team to snaffle a deserved win. Tim Dyer was disappointed with Denbigh's defeat on the back of two home wins and had been hopeful of a third. " There are ways to get beat and today was not the way to get beat. If you are beaten by a side that have just played you off the park , that's fair enough but Llanfairpwll have come here today and we haven't turned up , to be honest. Wed, 29 August 2007 Second Helpings As Town Rout DyrnySecond half specialists Denbigh Town saw off Llandyrnog United with a four goal salvo to record back to back home victories, writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. After a barren first 45 minutes , Town took the game by the scruff of the neck , though Dyrny will be pointing to a dubious penalty that really turned the game. With both teams cancelling each other out , the second half sprang into life on 47 minutes when tricky winger Kenny Burgess sought out Mike Lundstram with a lovely through ball. Lundstram's pace took him away from a static United back line and he swept the ball home to bring what had been a dour game to life. ![]() Lundstram Slips One Home & Burgess Converts Dyrny now tried to up their own tempo and Jon Slater got his head to a wicked Danny Roberts cross , but the big striker was unlucky to see his effort thunder wide. The Central Park outfit suddenly discovered their passing game and as Dyrny pushed forward , so the gaps began to appear. O'Mahoney received a ball in the box and his first time flick hit a United hand and Dyrny were in agony to see the referee point to the spot. Burgess stepped forward and Ian Davies got a hand to the blockbuster but was unable to keep the ball out. ![]() Ian Evans In The Thick Of It & Luke O'Mahoney Scores Two nil was now a tough ask for the away side but it took two wonder saves from glovesman Jamie Hulse to keep Dyrny at bay as they sought an immediate response. John James threw on Anthony Marshall in the hope he could conjure a goal back , but Town were beginning to exploit the gaps and another Town breakaway gave Town a killer third. Luke O'Mahoney found himself with ball at feet in front of target and the youngster tucked the ball home as quick as a flash to make the game safe. Hulse In Action & Paul Edwards On The Prowl Town were now picking off the United side at will , and with Booker added to the menu , were serving up some exciting fare in front of goal. Tue, 28 August 2007 ![]() Derby Delight as Clayton Clinches Victory Defiant Denbigh Town Reserves bounced back from a two goal deficit to claim a morale boosting win against local derby rivals Llandyrnog United Reserves , reports Peter Glynn at Cae Nant. It was a game that could have gone either way , with two well matched teams serving up a veritable feast of football and some smashing goals to boot. ![]() Dyrny ripped into Town from the off and only some stern defending from Justin Jones and Jamie Clayton kept a rampant United side at bay. Gradually Town found their feet and Ben Stanway , at his best , was linking well with Jonny Bowen , who won a ball , fed the impressive Stanway and his sweeping cross from the bye line was somehow scrambled behind for a flag kick. Town were growing in confidence , playing against the slope and finding their men with slick passing. Adam Owen impressed with some neat touches , and Tom Sheridan was at the races with his usual 110 percent effort. Chris Hughes began to pull the strings as Denbigh began to dominate. Simon Mackie and Gaz John Williams were a menace up front , and the latter was desperately unlucky to see one long range effort strike wood and another glancing header from one of Stanway's pinpoint centres inch wide. ![]() Llandyrnog were still a dangerous proposition and on the 45 minute mark they unlocked the Town defence following a super crossfield ball from Emyr Jones which landed at the feet of Endaf Jones. The United striker took a touch before lashing home to edge the home side ahead. The second stanza opened with Dyrny scenting blood as wave after wave came at the Town , but Mason and Clayton were again immense to keep the hungry home side at arms length. A goal looked likely for the Cae Nant outfit and it appeared courtesy of Dylan Williams on 61 minutes , the youngster sweeping home the ball after an excellnt build up. But within two minutes it was that man Mason who threw Town a lifeline , a bullet header rippling the net and suddenly it was Denbigh turning the screw. Again and again , Sheridan's charges pounded the Cae Nant side's defence in search of parity , and only a mixture of desperate defending and sheer bad luck kept Town out. Steffan Tomos produced two trademark runs as Dyrny frantically tried to catch him. Something had to give and it was Chris Hughes who unlocked the door on 86 minutes , his strike being greeted with a wave of joy as Town found themselves deservedly level. A draw may have been a fair result but the Central Park brigade had only one thing in mind as deep into injury time the ball fell to big Jamie Clayton outside the Dyrny box. His sweet strike was a match for Nani's any day and Town had grabbed the three points with the last kick of a good tempered game to claim the bragging rights. Sat, 25 August 2007 ![]() Dominant Denbigh Town came from behind to record a 3-1 win over Holyhead Hotspur and were worthy of the score in a one sided affair , reports Peter Glynn from Central Park. ![]() After an opening day draw and a midweek defeat at the hands of local rivals Bala Town , Dyer's men were desperate to kick start their season and early doors it was one way traffic as Tommy Harrison and Kenny Burgess were making hay against a shaky Hotspur back line , including a blockbusting volley that skimmed a post from the eager Harrison. Yet against the run of play it was the visitors who took a lead , when a long ball out of defence on 15 minutes cleared the head of Mark Orme. Hulse was quickly off his line to challenge Holyhead's Tommy Edwards , but his kick fell to the dangerous Ian Williams who sent the ball back over the glovesman to record a shock lead. Town were rattled and began to huff and puff , but Lundstram was unlucky to have two efforts ruled out , the first for hand ball and the second , a more dubious decision , for offside. ![]() Tony Davies was a power house at the back as Holyhead launched a rare attack , and the big man somehow got his foot to the ball as Williams threated to poach a second. The second stanza was more of the same , with Town pitching camp in the Hotspur half but with little reward from a combination of hurried finishing and rank bad fortune. Manager Dyer threw on Luke O'Mahoney and the boy mountain began to ruffle some feathers. A goal was surely coming as first Tony Davies stayed up after a corner and saw his flick header beat the keeper but clear a post. Then O'Mahoney latched onto superb work from Ian Evans but his shot was snaffled by the Hotspur glovesman at the second attempt. ![]() But the inevitable happened and it came in somewhat controversial fashion. Worker bee Ian Evans broke free of the Holyhead back line on 74 minutes and was cynically denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity but referee Trigg deemed the foul worthy of a yellow. Justice prevailed as up stepped Harrison and the influential midfielder curled a beauty around the wall to give Town parity. Now it was a matter of when and how many. Lundstram and Booker combined to test an under pressure Shanahan in the Islander's goal , then Hobson sent over a wicked cross that was somehow bundled to safety with O'Mahoney looking to capitalise. And it was the Evans boys who swept the Central Park side into the lead on 78 minutes , when Kevin showed some brotherly love with a swirling cross and Ian headed the ball in off the bar. Then on 81 minutes Holyhead compounded matters with some fussy defending which allowed Ian Evans to snatch the ball and poke wide of Shanahan to complete the scoring. As quick as a flash it was hit home by Sean Burrows to give Rhuddlan a 49 second advantage. Rhuddlan were quick to close down Denbigh's eager youngsters , but Tom Sheridan almost headed an equaliser from a Jonny Bowen cross , and then Gaz John Williams was denied a shot on target by a last ditch tackle , having been played in by Adam Owen. Darren Cassidy was unlucky to see his chance blocked off and the follow up from the midfielder was inches off target. Tony Sheridan urged his men to carry on playing the passing game as the second half opened with Rhuddlan Town immediately at it , spurning two chances to increase their lead. Sheridan threw on the experienced Chris Brown and his physical presence created opportunities for Tom Sheridan and then Gaz John , the latter shooting over following a flick on. Another Gaz John effort was tipped round the post as Town upped the ante , then a Ryan Harden flag kick was dropped by the host's glovesman and Sheridan's shot was hacked off the line. Next a Jamie Clayton bullet header inched just over the bar. Tue, 21 August 2007 ![]() Fisher King as Bala Sink Denbigh Goals either side of half time by Neil Fisher condemned Denbigh Town to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of local rivals Bala Town at Maes Tegid , writes Peter Glynn. Though early days , Colin Caton's men have hit the season running with back to back victories and are sitting pretty on top of the Cymru Alliance , whilst Dyer's Denbigh have garnered only the one point , that coming from their opening day draw at Bodedern. The visitors started brightly and Tommy Harrison had the first real effort at goal. The big midfielder found the ball at his feet thirty yards out but his effort just cleared the Bala bar with the home custodian back pedalling. Neil Fisher gave notice of his eagerness to get on the score sheet , and Hulse happy to see the hitman's effort inch over. The first quarter was a scrappy affair with little in the way of penalty box action. Andy Booker swung over a wicked free kick that was punched to safety , then as half time beckoned , the Bala defence failed to clear the ball and Kenny Burgess gathered but was unfortunate to see his placed effort just off target. The hosts hit back and Owain Roberts sent a shot wide but then on the 45 minute mark the home side grabbed a lead when Neil Fisher angled onto a through ball and planted the ball wide of Hulse. The second stanza opened badly for Denbigh as the Maes Tegid side doubled their advantage , this time from the spot , when Mark Orme was adjudged to have brought Fisher to terra firma. The same man wiped himself down and cooly fired home to give the hosts breathing space. Town looked rattled , with Burgess and Adam Jones seeing yellow for late tackles as Bala now began to turn the screw. Dyer threw on Luke O'Mahoney and Jamie Hobson in the hope of pinching one back , but it was Orme to the rescue with a goal saving tackle as Bala threatened to run riot. The hosts hit a post on the hour mark as they sought a killer third , but at the other end a Booker shot was deflected wide and Mike Lundstram was unlucky when he almost forced the ball home after good work by Hobson. It was too little , too late as Bala played out time and the home side were unfortunate not to grab a third on full time , when the flag waver ruled out another Fisher effort for offside. Sat, 18 August 2007 ![]() ![]() On this performance it was a game that Dyer's men should never have lost , so a draw is possibly the fairest result , with Boded having the better of the first stanza and Town bossing the second. The home side started at a good pace and Town had to wait until 22 minutes before firing off their first effort on goal , this when quicksilver Mike Lundstram (pic below left) found the ball at feet on the edge of the box but his firm strike flew wide. ![]() Town were playing neat football but suddenly the hosts were ahead. A quick breakaway saw Marc Evans (pic above right) collect a pass in the Town's six yard box , show good control and turn to convert adeptly into the corner with Hulse helpless. Town were rattled and the usually placid Kevin Evans saw yellow for reacting to a stern challenge. Tommy Harrison was the pick of the visitor's and it was the big midfielder who almost snatched a reply. Kenny Burgess sent over a pinpoint free kick which was met almost too well by the incoming Harrison and the chance inched wide. Boded could have had a second when a rasper cleared Hulse's goal , and then it was Denbigh's turn to curse their luck when Harrison (pic below right), again was the thick of it , saw his header thump against the bar. Andy Booker and Adam Jones linked up sweetly early in the second half and the former found himself onside and bearing down on goal but somehow his placed effort went wide. Town were getting closer and Lundstram should have converted from six yards out on the hour mark , and the same man was unfortunate to see another effort strike wood , this time after good work from Adam Jones (pic below left). ![]() ![]() Next Kevin Evans found the side netting as Town tore into the now under-pressure Bodedern back line. Sat, 18 August 2007 A baptism of fire awaited a youthful Denbigh Town Reserves in their first Cymru Alliance Premier game of the season , though for long periods Tony Sheridan's charges were the equal of a tough , quality Abergele Rovers outfit , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Going two down in the first stanza was a tough pill to swallow but Denbigh Town Reserves , their starting eleven boosted by goal sniffer Gaz John Williams , fought back for parity at the break , before finally going under to a last quarter goal salvo from rampant Rovers. Having scraped the bar on 10 minutes , Gele's Sam McDoughall slipped the ball home on 25 minutes after a fumble , and five minutes later Tommy Galvin doubled the visitors advantage. ![]() Town were creating , and a nice piece of footwork by Adam Owen let in Gaz John , who fired home from an acute angle. The same man was fouled in the box a minute before the break , and despite vociferous Rovers protests , Williams strode up to blast home the equaliser. The second half was stalemate until the hour mark , when Gele struck twice in double quick time , both from Danny Abbott , which killed Town chances stone dead. Gaz John had an effort palmed away after great work by the returning Paul Edwards , but then at the death Sam McDoughall hit a screamer from 30 yards to settle it. Wed, 15 August 2007 ![]() Local Derby Produces Six Goal Thriller Goal crazy Ruthin Town Reserves and Denbigh Town Reserves served up a soccer-fest , sharing six in an exciting draw in a pre-season local derby , played in the best spirit, writes Peter Glynn at The Memorial Fields. ![]() Both sides went at it from the first whistle , with Ruthin having the better of early exchanges and taking an early lead through a sweet strike from Liam Jones. Denbigh Town pressed for an equaliser and a foul on the edge of the box presented Chris Hughes with an opportunity and the midfielder struck a low fizzer into the net through the wall. Level at the break , the game ebbed and flowed , and it was the home side that pinched a lead when a corner found its way into the Central Park club's net , but a superb cross from Steffan Tomos was met by quiet assassin Matt Toole and the scores were level. Another mix up presented Ruthin with a 3-2 lead , Garmon's flag kick evading everyone - but Denbigh were not to be denied and the goal of the game earned the visitors a draw. Steffan Tomos and Chris Hughes joined forces to release Gaz John Williams , who played in Simon Mackie with a superb ball with the outside of his right peg. Mackie took a stride before curling a beauty beyond the Ruthin keeper to claim a share of the bragging rights. Andy Booker was the first to register , his first time effort being fumbled back into his path and the winger despatched the rebound. ![]() On 40 minutes Mike Lundstram was quickest off the mark and he waltzed around the keeper to double Town's tally and the same man hooked home from a Booker corner to give the score some credibility a minute later. Two minutes into the restart Ian Evans nipped in as the keeper could only parry another goalbound effort , and the hitman tucked the ball away to make it four. Sat, 11 August 2007 ![]() Slick Denbigh Town pulled off a morale boosting pre-season win over Welsh Premier Newtown FC and were more than worthy of their success , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. Missing a number of key players , Town would have expected to be up against it , with an almost full strength Mid-Wales opposision looking cool and composed early doors. Jellicoe and O'Mahoney battle + Hulse in action But a piece of individual brilliance from Kenny Burgess on 5 minutes stunned the Welsh Premier outfit which set the tone for an excellent home side performance. Newtown's Warton passed back to the visiting custodian Havard and his clearance was met first time on the volley by Burgess who returned the compliment from 40 yards , and was delighted to see the ball nestling in the back of the net. A lung bursting run by Burgess finished with the ball clearing the bar , and then Luke O'Mahoney fought his way into the box , only to be denied by a whisker. The visitors were in shock , and more bad news came their way after a cross by Adam Jones was met in the box by Kevin Evans. The midfielder twisted and turned before feeding in brother Ian , who allowed the keeper to go to ground before planting the ball between the sticks to double Denbigh's advantage. John Roberts almost got into the act when he found himself one on one with Havard , but the full back's shot was blocked off at the expense of a corner. ![]() Ian Evans gathers Luke O'Mahoney Dyer's men were rampant and the move of the match involved , not surprisingly , the mesmeric Booker whose combination with Adam Jones released O'Mahoney. The teenager's fizzing cross was met by Ian Evans in front of goal , but the cruelest of bobbles sent the ball over with the goal gaping. The Robins began to settle and North Wales legend Marc Lloyd Williams met a great cross by the impressive Craig Moses and was desperate to see the ball inch over , with Hulse nowhere. Moses was now running riot at the Town back line , and Town's Tony Davies was superb in wresting the ball from the youngster when put through by Lloyd Williams. And Moses was then unfortunate to see a clever flick roll along the Central Park club's crossbar after excellent build up play by the improving Robins. The restart saw the Premier team up their game even further , and they began to pressure Town in their own half. The Newtown coach was parked in the Infirmary and it looked as if they wanted to put some of the home players there too , when first Tony Davies was replaced after getting a bloody nose and then O'Mahoney got a bang on the head which put him in Disneyland. Two Moses whizzbangs cleared Hulse's right post in the space of a minute , then Mark Orme stretched to clear away a goal bound effort from Kevin Scott. Next Warton hit a shot too high , followed by a more glaring effort when Rob Dean blazed over in front of goal with Town defenders nowhere. As the game ran down , Manager Dyer added Matt Toole and Tom 'Crouch' Sheridan to the equation. Toole was desperate to see his firm header superbly saved by a flying Havard and the keeper then somehow got down to a Sheridan effort that had goal written all over it. Yet the Robins were still a menace on the break and at the death it was player manager Darren Ryan who fired a consolation , but there was no denying Town's victory as the home side played out for a 2-1 win. Thu, 9 August 2007 ![]() ![]() Darrel Jones clears his lines. Goal hungry Denbigh went nap in the re-arranged friendly fixture against Bangor City , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park. A 5-1 scoreline may be a little tough on the visitors , whose youngsters tired towards the end of a sometimes feisty encounter , but there is no denying the quality of Town's play and their five strikes had the crowd purring in appreciation. With new boy Luke O'Mahoney starting his first game , Town started the brighter and the debutant got into the action early doors , forcing a corner that City keeper Jack Millward did well to pouch with Tommy Harrison steaming in. Mike Lundstram manufactured a chance , twisting and turning to produce an opening but the goalgrabber banged the floor in frustration as his shot sliced wide. It was all Denbigh and it was little surprise when the hosts took the lead. On 15 minutes John Roberts and Ryan Harden combined from a free kick , and it was the former who sent in an inch-perfect ball for Kevin Evans to head past a stranded Millward. Harden was replaced with a jarred knee soon after and Bangor began to pick up the pace , and it was no surprise when a free kick was converted by the impressive Craig Hutchinson , which brought the game level at the break. City began the second stanza on top and Danny Walton combined with Shaun Beck who tested Hulse but the Town stopper was alert to pounce on the ball. On 70 minutes Town began to turn up the heat and it was that man Jamie Hobson who unleashed a twenty five yard fizzer that flashed into the net with Millward clutching at air to give Dyer's men an edge. There was now only one side in it. Tommy Harrison arrived late in the box to plant a header just wide from a Booker corner , and from more Booker magic , Harrison's volley was blocked on the line with the City defence at sixes and sevens. Another goal was surely on the cards and when it arrived it was an absolute belter. The 17yr old O'Mahoney picked up the ball in his own half , shrugged off a couple of tackles and outpaced the now tiring City back line to thump home a superb solo effort. Ian Evans joined the party and there was an element of 'anything you can do' about his effort. Finding the ball at his feet wide on the right , Evans beat one , then another , rode a high challenge and blasted the ball home with the City defence looking shell shocked. The fifth was another cracker as Lundstram , recovered from a bloodied nose , wriggled like a worm , fought his way into the box and lifted the ball beyond an outstretched Millward to make the final score 5-1 to the hosts. Wed, 1 August 2007 ![]() Hardy Town Pinch Draw Resilient Denbigh Town Reserves bounced back from a 3-1 deficit to battle out a 3-3 draw against Llanefydd , writes Peter Glynn at Cae Llanefydd. The recently reformed home side were a tough opposition on their own patch and after coping adequately with what Town could throw at them for the first quarter , Nefydd struck twice , first with a thunderbolt of a shot on the 20 minute mark and then Town , having failed to recover from the first strike , got into a muddle at the back and left a Nefydd striker to nip in and pinch a second. Boasting Harden and Gaz John in their ranks , Denbigh were always a threat and it was the latter who got his name on the score sheet after excellent work by Scrimshaw and Gaz Lewis. Nefydd bounced back immediatly and added a third , but on 40 minutes , the whistleblower awarded a dubious penalty to the visitors for an alleged handball , Gaz John stepping forward to slam the spot kick home. A more blatant penalty for a trip on the same man was waved away a minute later as the Reds pressed for an equaliser. The second half was a different kettle as Town tightened up at the back and early in the half an Earnshaw corner was met at the far post by Chris Hughes who planted a firm header past the striken home custodian to level the affair. The moment of the match arrived when Ben Stanway strode forward from the back and curled a peach , only to see the Nefydd keeper turn the effort away at full length much to the appreciation of the spectators. Harden was class in the middle of the park and he laid a numer of balls onto the away side's strikers , and further Town goals were prevented with a mixture of bad luck , good defending and poor finishing. Scrimshaw and Gaz Lewis were running riot down one flank , whilst Adam Owen almost got into the act with a sweetie that was turned behind as the Central Park mob turned up the heat. Make no mistake , CPD Llanefydd are useful. They will cause teams problems as they possess quality. Their set up is a welcome addition to the local football family and their support , which is community based , looks impressive. Reserves captain Justin Jones was at his best , as he had to be , and the second half performance would have pleased Manager Sheridan. With Harden and Gaz John seeking fitness after injury , Town Reserves look as if they may be a useful outfit in the Premier Division if able to call up such quality. These two will have benefitted from their work out and the class they showed was obvious during the 90 minutes. Another notable was Jamie Clayton who , together with his captain , worked non stop for the cause. The loss of Scrimshaw and Lewis to University will be a blow as they are uncontrollable down the left flank. Earnshaw will be another loss , when he moves out of the area with his employment and Denbigh's loss will be someone else's gain. These players have grown a little taller , look stronger , more confident and have hit the new season as they left last year - on top of their game. Kevin James is another who gives nothing less than 100 percent , and with others to come back from work committments , Manager Sheridan does have a squad to make an impact in the Clwyd Premier Division. The addition of Simon Mackie may prove crucial as he looks the business up front. To be fair and on possession , Denbigh Town Reserves should have put this game to bed second half. Once Manager Sheidan picks his starting eleven come season's start , then expect his outfit to be ready and able to make thier mark in Clwyd's top flight. Denbigh Town Reserves: Gaz Smith , Kevin James , Rob Scrimshaw , Justin Jones (C), Jamie Clayton , Tom Sheridan , Ryan Harden , Gaz Lewis , Simon Mackie , Gaz John Williams , Gareth Roberts : Subs (all used) Chris Brown , John Earnshaw , Justin Wilding , Ben Stanway , Chris Hughes , Adam Owen. Wed, 1 August 2007 ![]() 31/07/2007 Denbigh Town...6 Penycae...2 Steve Reds at Sunny Central Park writes... Penycae stunned the home crowd by taking the lead, a bullet header inside the six yard box from a corner. Denbigh had plenty of the ball but all too often tried the difficult ball. The equaliser came from a Jamie Hobson penalty with Denbigh having been denied an earlier spot kick for a clear trip on the industrious Mike Lundstrum. Half time 1-1 Denbigh came out in the 2nd period with Dean Martin's words ringing in their ears. It had the desired effect as Town dominated and were camped in the Penycae half for long spells. Denbigh took the lead with a bullet header by Lundstrum from an Andy Booker cross. Mark Orme smashed home from 6 yds to make it 3-1. Jamie Hobson scored his 2nd penalty after Ian Evans was hacked in the 6 yd box for 4-1. Penycae were struggling to cope with movement and pace of the Denbigh approach play and Kevin Evans scored with a sweet right foot drive to make it 5-1. A rare excursion into Denbigh territory saw Penycae score again but Denbigh had the last word when Andy Booker collected the keepers clearance ran back at him, waltzed around him and planted the ball in an unguarded net. Sat, 28 July 2007 ![]() Town battled out a scoreless draw with Welsh Premier outfit Connah's Quay Nomads and on the balance of play , the draw was a fair result , writes Peter Glynn at Central Park , Denbigh. Most pleasing for Dyer's men will have been the clean sheet , particularly after shipping four goals in last week's defeat against Llanrwst United , and with a little more composure in front of goal , Town may have sneaked a win. The first half was evens-stevens , with Mike Lundstram and Ian Evans involved in most of what went on in attack , whilst at the back Mark Orme and Kev Jones were dominant , with triallist Tony Davies proving a powerful figure in the heart of the home defence. Town were almost unlocked on 15 minutes when Nomad's Stuart Cook wriggled his way into the Town box , but he found Jamie Hulse in skinflint mood and the Central Park stopper snaffled his shot. Cook was the pick of the Quay players and Kev Jones and Orme combined to prevent yet another run at a backpedalling Denbigh defence. Then Stewart White unleashed a shot with goal written all over it but Hulse was relieved to see the Quayman's effort rebound off the still quivering crossbar. Lundstram manufactured a fine effort following a one-two with strike twin Ian Evans , and the left hand post will need another coat of varnish as the ball skimmed past , with Nomad keeper Danny Evans nowhere. The game turned scrappy till midway through the second stanza , then sprang into life as Lundstram again skimmed a post from 20 metres. Next Ian Evans had his effort pouched by a relieved Nomads custodian after he was released by the now irresistable Lundstram. On 70 minutes Town had their best spell. Tommy Harrison and Kenny Burgess began prodding and probing , but Nomad's held firm as first Ian Evans shot at a defender and then Andy Booker just failed to convert with a cheeky lob. The Quay were hardly troubling Hulse and with Darrell Jones added to the mix , Town played out the game with relatively few worries. Upfront , Town will be regretting a lack of composure but Tim Dyer will be happy with the result as he tweaks his team for the new season ahead. Thu, 26 July 2007 ![]() Mackie Magic
Mackie gains possession Gugs in action A Simon Mackie double and a Chris Hughes effort secured a three nil victory for Denbigh Town Reserves against a useful St. Asaph side at Roe Plas Meadows , writes Peter Glynn. Almost back to full strength , the Town went at it from the first whistle and on 5 minutes Matt Toole was desperate to see his overhead effort twang the bar with City's keeper grasping at air. Ben Stanway and Steffan Tomos were making hay on the heavy playing surface , and the youngsters combined well to set up Mackie whose effort was somehow scrambled behind. Town continued to press and John Earnshaw , captain on his final appearance for the club , was running the show in the middle of the park. A goal was surely coming , but Denbigh had to wait until the 44th minute , when a sweet cross from the right was met by the impressive Mackie who sidefooted home to give the Town an edge. The second half was much the same , with the Central Park outfit running things from the off. The Citizens sensed an equaliser early on in the piece , but a combination of Jonny Bowen and Jamie Clayton cleared the danger. New man Josh Hannan was switched to the centre and his ball released Gareth Roberts , the youngster twisting and turning to produce a neat cross for James Koval who was only thwarted by a last ditch tackle. St. Asaph found Chris Brown in ungenerous mood as two break-outs were smothered by the Denbigh stopper , and one long clearance fell to Koval whose cross shot was fumbled by the City keeper and Mackie pounced to poach his second. It was now all Denbigh and Gareth Roberts chased down a defender , robbed the ball and found the incoming Chris Hughes , whose strike looped over the keeper and into the net via the crossbar. Tue, 24 July 2007 ![]() Town Sucker Punched by Hot Roosters It was goals galore as Llanrwst United pipped Denbigh Town to the post in a 4-3 thriller at Central Park , writes Peter Glynn. Boasting new signings Kenny Burgess and Tommy Harrison , things looked rosy early doors for the home side , with an opener on the 10 minute mark from Mike Lundstram , the speed merchant rolling the ball home after finding himself with a one on one with the Roosters custodian. ![]() Lundstram turns away after giving Town an early lead. United were not there for the ride and it was a breakaway that produced their equaliser , with the tricky Aron Jones slotting home after good work by Luke Mahoney in midfield. Town bounced back and Lundstram had a shot that inched wide and Burgess was unlucky on two occasions but were caught on the rebound when Luke Mahoney slammed home after the Central Park back line fell asleep. Ian Evans almost poached an equaliser on 30 minutes when he skipped past the Rooster shotstopper only to find the last defender there to turn his shot behind for a flag kick. ![]() Worker Bee: Ian Evans was busy all evening. The visitors began to take charge and United made it three on the 40 minute mark when the excellent Jamie Turner fired home with Denbigh looking for a linesman's flag. But the Town were given something of a reprieve on half time when the whistle blower awarded the home side a dubious penalty , from which spot specialist Jamie Hobson scored. After the break the Town set up camp in the United half , and it was no surprise when worker bee Ian Evans rose to head home an equaliser on 70 minutes . Then Darren Cassidy will count himself unfortunate to strike wood with a 25 yard swerver but the Roosters were always dangerous on the counter , with Turner and Aron Jones again going desperately close. Burgess and Harrison both had opportunities that failed to find the target , but it was left to Leighton Griffiths with the goal of the game - a sweet 20 yard volley from a cleared corner - to produce the sucker punch and eek out a win for the impressive Welsh Alliance outfit. Sat, 21 July 2007 Understrength Denbigh Town Reserves had a stern work out against Brynford United in a hastily rearranged fixture at Hafod - y Bryn after the Central Park pitch failed a pitch inspection on Friday. Town were up against it early doors as United raced into a two goal lead , and it could have been worse but for two flying saves from evergreen Chris Brown and a host of profligate misses from the home side's front men. Denbigh were missing a number of key players and it showed , yet the Reds stuck to their guns and at times produced some neat touches and movement. Conditions were atrocious in driving rain and wind , and with Brynford on a high after inflicting a recent 5-2 mauling to Rhyl Nomads , Denbigh needed to show some character and this they did , standing up to some stern challenges and sticking to the principles of a passing game. Man of the Match Chris Brown was in sparkling form between the sticks , but it was left to little winger Steffan Tomos to provide Town's best moment. Chris Hughes and Martin Jones broke out of defence and fed the mercurial Tomos. With Matty Toole screaming for the ball in the box , Tomos jinked around a man before curling the ball over the United keeper to supply a Denbigh consolation. Jonny Bowen & Tom Sheridan also shone , working their socks off in defence & midfield respectively in order to keep rampant United in some sort of check. Adam Owen , Chris Hughes , Justin Wilding and Ben Stanway were playing their first game for the Reserves - and despite the disappointing result , Manager Sheridan will see this first outing of the season as part of the learning process. What lessons have been learnt will be shown in the Town's next match up , a friendly with St. Asaph City on Thursday 26th July at Roe Plas Meadows , kick off 7pm. Sat, 14 July 2007 ![]() Impressive Denbigh hit the ground running in a useful pre-season workout against Warrinton Town Reserves at Central Park , writes Peter Glynn. And it was the new boys on the block who caught the eye as Town bagged a 3-1 win in sunny conditions on a green baize of a pitch. With Orme and Roberts absent , Darrell Jones stepped forward to fill the gap and his partnership with utility man Kevin Evans was pivotal in keeping the young hungry Cheshire side at bay. Up front the Town looked eager to get on the score sheet , and it was Ian Evans who unpicked the Warriors defence early doors to set up Mike Lundstram who finished with ease. Kenny Burgess' trickery released the same man , and the visiting shotstopper was fortunate to stay on the paddock after cynically grounding Lundstram who was certain to score. Town were at it like knives and Paul Edwards drove at the visiting defence , took a richochet in his stride and lashed home a close range effort to double Denbigh's lead. Two excellent saves kept the Wire in it and Andy Booker fizzed a left footer an inch wide of the far post as Town threatened to run riot. But Warrington kept plugging away and got their reward when Hulse could only palm away a snorter into the path of an onrushing Anthony Brownville , and the youngster duly converted. The second half was much the same pattern with the Central Park outfit dominating proceedings , without looking like adding to the scoreline. Hulse pulled out his customary flying save to deny a Warrior equaliser but it was left to the mercurial Andy Booker to add the cherry to the scoreline. The winger gathered the ball out wide , cut inside and curled a thirty yarder off the stanchion into the net. Sat, 5 May 2007 ![]() Dominant Denbigh Town successfully defended the Cookson Cup with a 3-0 defeat of Llanrug United at Farrar Road , Bangor , writes Peter Glynn. ![]() A League and Cup Double has been the reward for another outstanding season under manager Tim Dyer , who has also been awarded with the Manager of the Year title by the Welsh Alliance League. Add to this the Fair Play Trophy , and no wonder things are looking rosy at Central Park. Playing some of their best football of the season , Town were good value for the 3-0 scoreline and limited their opponents to half chances and long range efforts , whilst carving out numerous chances themselves and registering with three excellent goals , including a dazzling solo effort from Darren Cassidy. The Caernarfonshire side employed tough , no-nonsense tactics , and Town had to weather an early storm before stamping their footballing authority on the game. Early doors Town were limited to the occasional breakaway , yet on 2 minutes Williams Cooke could have registered when he lobbed wide of the keeper and then on 10 minutes the same man rifled in a rip snorter which was eventually scrambled away by United shot-stopper Aled Williams. Target man Williams Cooke was very active and he next chanced his luck with a left foot volley from 35 yards which whistled past a post. 'Rug countered when Terry Williams sent over a ball that was eventually cleared after brave work by John Roberts. Then Hulse was brave to dive at the feet of dangerman Williams who was utilising his pace in an effort to puncture to Town back line. A Kevin Evans cross was headed behind as Town ratcheted up the pressure , then sibling Ian had a near post shot deflected into the side netting as Town pressed for that precious opener. Kevin Jones was making hay on the left flank and he linked with Williams Cooke before hitting a swirler that was palmed to safety. Denbigh Captain Mark Orme had to put his body on the line to deny the speedy Terry Williams and came up with the football , sending a pass out to Ian Evans , but United somehow managed to hoick the ball into the car park. It was only temporary relief for the now under-siege United team as Town struck with a beauty on the 40 minute mark. Ian Evans , now back at his best , received a ball out on the right and he turned on a sixpence , threading one into Kenny Burgess. The goal getter took a touch before firing low into the net to edge the Central Park outfit in front. Llanrug hit back and John Roberts had to be at his strongest and most determined to clear his lines as an equaliser looked likely for a second , with United's star man Williams calling for a penalty. But Town then took a huge stride towards retaining their Cup when, on 43 minutes , Denbigh doubled their advantage , and again it was the Ian Evans - Burgess combo that carved it out , with the latter firing home his second of the night. Credit to Llanrug , they did not lie down and as half time beckoned , a 30 yard volley was superbly turned round a post by the flying Jamie Hulse - his second high quality save in a week. The second stanza saw Town determined to keep their opponents at arms length , limiting their opponents to the occasional breakaway. Paul Edwards sent in a fizzing shot that was headed into the side netting by a beleaguered Llanrug defender , and then a Harden give and go almost fell to sub Moores as Denbigh began to dominate all areas of the park. 'Rug were getting a lesson in the art of football and Man of the Match Matty Gatfield was cynically felled in frustration by Terry Williams who saw yellow. Manager Dyer now added Darren Cassidy to the mix as Town went for the jugular , and that produced a contender for Goal of the Season. The fleet-footed wide man collected the ball on the half way line. Cassidy beat one , slipped past another and sped into the box , before taking it round a third United defender and slotting home to the delight of his collegues. There was no way back for Llanrug and there were jubliant scenes as Orme stepped forward to receive the Cookson Cup to round of the perfect season for the Central Park club. ![]() Match Ball Sponsor; The Hand Inn Final Score: Denbigh Town 3 Llanrug United 0 Scorers: Burgess (2) Cassidy. Sun, 8 April 2007 ![]() Greenfield FC are the winners of the 2007 REM Jones Memorial Cup winners, which took place at sunny Central Park. An attendance of 208 watched the game in which Greenfield FC were all over Rovers in the first half , opening up a 2-0 at the interval. Owain Roberts , on 12 minutes, chippeed the Gele keeper beautifully to put FC ahead. Greenfield then hit a post after Tony Emm had conceded a free kick on the edge of the box. Karl Ainsworth grabbed a second on the 30 minutes, and all in all was thoroughly deserved. Gele gave it their best shot in the second , but despite pressure , FC held them at bay , until Paul Demilow pinched a goal on the 80 minutes mark , but that proved only a consolation. Being a beautiful day , it did show Central Park in its full glory. The pitc was in excellent condition , and the players revelled in the playing surface. Ally , Dennis , Kita , Jess , Steve and Pedro were 'mine hosts' for the Clwyd League officials. The kitchen was at maximum , selling out of all hot foods and cold drinks!

Wed, 28 March 2007 ![]() 4-1 sounds a bit of a hammering , but the game was more of a contest that the scoreline suggests. But this win will send out a message that simply says that Town are back to their best and scoring for fun. Man of the Match Williams Cooke opened proceedings during a scrappy first quarter by turning on a Harden pinpointer to slam home from ten yards. Town were miserly at the back and were snuffing out most Pwll incursions , whilst up front the willing Burgess and Ian Evans continually caused mayhem in the home back line. Burgess linked up with Harden and the small magician pinged over a ball that Richard Williams Cooke almost connected with , but was denied when set to pull the trigger. Next Hulse had to deal with a sweeping cross before finding Adam Jones whose run almost let in a marauding Ian Evans , but the Town goalgrabber slipped when about to pounce. The second stanza had a surprise in store early doors , as a Kevin Jones challenge was deemed illegal and Pwllheli found themselves level from the penalty spot. The Central Park outfit responded at once and Burgess found himself with only the keeper to beat , and his neat lob duly found the net. Pwllheli were not lying down and were unlucky when a goalbound effort was acrobatically cleared off the line by the inspirational John Roberts. Ian Evans was then presented with a similar opportunity as his partner in crime Burgess , but the Denbigh man was frustrated to see his lob effort graze over the bar , with the keeper already preparing for the worst. Evans was not to be left out of the party , and the workaholic had the ball at his feet from a clever through ball and he swept home to really kill the game stone dead. Super sub Darren Cassidy tried his luck with a spectacular effort and will be happy with the outcome. The wideman spotted the keeper a little off his line and he floated over a cross-cum-shot that found the top corner , much to the delight of the travelling band of supporters. 4-1 was a little tough on the Lleyn side but Dyer will be happy to have put this potential banana skin out of the way as Dyer's men march on towards a promotion spot. ![]() Darren Cassidy grabbed Denbigh Town's fourth goal Category: match reports -- posted at: 8:31 AM Comments[3]
Wed, 28 March 2007 ![]() If a game is to be won by a single goal , it is probably as well that it should be a cracker. And so it proved at Central Park as Denbigh Town Reserves grabbed the runners up spot to claim an immediate return to the Mackenzie Jones Solicitors Clwyd League Premier Division with their 1-0 win in the all or nothing encounter against local rivals Trefnant Village. In front of a crowd of 124 , Town were probably good value , with the Rob Scrimshaw strike worthy of winning any game. And it was a delight to see such an important game played in the right spirit , with football being the winner at the end of the day. The hosts bossed the opening stanza and early doors Jonny Bowen fed a ball into the box , finding a lurking Matt Toole , but his clever lob cleared the bar. Gareth Lewis was brought to ground by Trefnant's Simon Jones and from Lee Mason's freekick , Tom Sheridan's flick header fell to John Earnshaw whose first time shot was deflected for a corner. Visiting striker Mark Evans tested Gaz Smith with a rasper , but at the other end Justin Jones wrapped his foot around a 30 yarder that whizzed just wide of an upright. On 22 minutes the Central Park side almost broke the deadlock. Gareth Lewis tricked his way to the byeline and his cross was glanced on by Sheridan to Madoc Jones , but the Town goal-grabber saw his firm strike deflected wide. It was all Denbigh as Madoc Jones had an effort ruled offiside when again put in by the towering Sheidan and then only a last ditch challenge by Richard Jones on the same man prevented a certain goal. On 35 minutes a great clearance from Villager Dylan Lloyd released goal king Jamie Davies and only an excellent challenge by Town captain Justin Jones stopped a certain chance. Madoc Jones and Toole combined well to test Stu Griffiths between the Village sticks , and the Treffy keeper then did well to pounce on a Lee Mason up and under. The difference between the two sides was to be that little bit of quality and on 41 minutes Rob Scrimshaw provided it. The little full back won the ball in his own half and strode towards the heart of the visitor's defence. Beating one man and then another , Scrimshaw unleashed his trademark blockbuster from 30 yards , giving Stu Griffiths no chance and to give Sheridan's men a precious lead. The visitors were a different proposition on the restart as they had to score twice to grab that promotion spot , and Gaz Smith was fortunate when his fumble almost fell to Gareth O'Loughlin and but for a Mason boot it may have been all square. An appeal against Mason for handball was airily waved away by the whistleblower , as Denbigh found themselves up against it for the first ten minutes of the second half. Madoc Jones saw yellow for a nonsense reason , but his strong run released Gareth Roberts who returned the compliment , but the goal failed to materialise as Madoc Jones ran out of room to release a meaningful shot. Mason had to be brave after getting an accidental elbow in the mush , but at the other end Madoc Jones was tearing his hair out as his fine drive was well saved by the excellent Stu Griffiths. Trefnant's Mark Jones popped up to fire wide after a great dink ball from Jamie Davies , and then Dai Clayton was unfortunate to see two efforts clear the bar , with a third on target jobby being parried away for a flag kick. The same man's cross ball was headed away in a panic by Scrimshaw as the Villages now fought like tigers to get back in the game. But on 75 minutes the hosts should have finished it when a Bowen ball found Madoc Jones. The Town strongman fed Matt Toole but his effort was saved at point blank range by Trefnant's Griffiths. It was end to end stuff as Simon Mackie tricked a Town defender , before setting up Richard Jones who fired wide. Then Toole again may have done better when he found himself with just the keeper to beat , but his shot across the bows slipped wide of the post. As the clock ran down , Madoc Jones had too many options and another chance to put the game to bed went begging. Whistleblower Hepton brought the game , and season , to an end after two minutes of stoppage time. Mark Goldsmith , Chairman of the Clwyd League , together with E. Emrys Williams presented Runners Up Medals to Denbigh Town Reserves in front of an appreciative crowd. Fri, 23 March 2007 ![]() Confident Town put paid to Conwy United with a 3-0 vitory that sets them up with Flint Town United in the Semi Final. And it could have been more if Tommy Harrison had not blazed over an 87th minute penalty - but by that time the game was over as a contest. From the first kick , Town were up for it and Darren Cassidy had a shooting chance on 5 minutes but was unlucky to see his strike inch wide. With the Central Park side seeing plenty of the ball , veteran Steve Jones ventured into the box for a visitor's corner but the big man headed just wide when well placed. On the half hour the probing Ryan Harden floated over a ball from a free kick which Jones again met with his head and again he was unlucky to see his effort off target. But a goal was coming and on 36 minutes it was Chris Moores who latched onto a superb through ball by Evans and from just inside the area he looked up and slammed the ball home with the Morfa Keeper clutching at air. Four miutes later it was two as Tommy Harrison sprinted clear after another intelligent feed by Harden and from the edge of the box he hammered home. Town keeper Hulse should have been charged an entry fee as he was a virtual spectator with the second half continued in the same vein. Dyer's men grabbed their third on 50 minutes and it was Harrison once again , this time picking up the ball from a woeful Conwy clearance and from 30 yards his shot bulged the top corner. Town now took their foot off the pedal and had enough about them to frustrate any of the Morfa's sides attacking ideas. On 87 minutes Town won a penalty following a foul on the silky Cassidy , but Harrison's effort was high , wide and not very handsome , but this does not detract from a good solid overall performance. Thu, 15 March 2007 ![]() Denbigh Town Reserves fell to defeat in the semi final of the REM Jones Cup against a tough Greenfield side at Ffordd Marian , writes Peter Glynn. With the hosts boasting players with Cymru Alliance experience , the Vale outfit were up against it for much of the match , but things may have been different if an early Gary Madoc Jones strike had been allowed to stand. Chris Brown threaded a ball back to Madoc Jones who gleefully planted the ball home only for the whistleblower to rule out the goal for offside. Playing against the wind , Greenfield applied the long ball over the top and Denbigh were fortunate that the hosts weren't ahead on three occasions in the first 10 minutes , thanks to a combination of good goalkeeping from Gareth Smith and woeful finishing. Silky soccer skills were difficult to apply on a postage stamp of a pitch , and another long ball fell to the Flintshire side's Owen Roberts who scooped in the opening goal. Gareth Smith was called into fine action to turn away a point blank effort from the same man , whilst up at the other end , Toole saw his half chance slide just past an upright. The restart saw Greenfield in the ascendancy and on 55 minutes the hosts doubled their lead courtesy of a Steve McGowan strike. Denbigh tried to turn the tide but King Canute would have had more luck , as Greenfield utilised their strength and determination in the wind to eventually overrun the youthful Town outfit. Paul Griffiths grabbed a brace on 59 and 70 minutes , and then Town grabbed a goal back when Matty Toole latched onto a through ball on 75 minutes , but at the death Owen Roberts grabbed his second and Greenfield's 5th to claim a place in the Cup Final where they will meet Abergele Rovers who defeated Mostyn 3-1 in the other semi. Thu, 15 March 2007 Llandudno Junction felt the full force of title aspirants Denbigh as the home side went nap at Central Park writes Peter Glynn. After putting up a fine display last week in the Cookson Cup Semi , the Railwaymen barely registered and there was only ever one team in it , with the hosts taking full advantage of the windy conditions in a one sided first half. Intense Town pressure on 8 minutes forced a hasty clearance by Junction's Rob Jones and the ball broke to Kenny Burgess who took a touch before burying it in the net to settle any Denbigh nerves. The little string-puller Ryan Harden was at his best and his bending free kick found the head of Mark Orme , but the Denbigh skipper's looping header cleared the bar. Paul Edwards put one wide of the post from 25 yards and then Ian Evans was unlucky to be ruled offside when released by Burgess. Ian Evans next set up Harden , but the final shot failed to hit the target but it was only a matter of time before Town doubled their lead. On 16 minutes Kevin Evans turned superbly in midfield and sent a ball out wide towards Burgess who was lurking on the right wing. The Denbigh man did well to keep the ball in play and sweep a first time ball into the box towards Paul Edwards , whose sweet half volley gave Junction's keeper no chance to make it 2-0. Clean sheet merchant Hulse was a virtual spectator until an Olly Walters long range effort was well handled by the Denbigh shotstopper but immediately Town produced their killer third , when on the 20 minute mark , Richard Williams Cooke swept in a sensational twenty yard curler to record his 13th league goal of the campaign. The hosts were not finished and after Hulse had pouched another Walters effort , Harden picked up a loose ball and slipped it to Burgess who dinked the ball past the despairing Jones to make it 4-0. Town were threatening to run up a cricket score. Williams Cooke shot across the face of goal , then Harden's volley fell to Kevin Evans whose first timer deflected wide for a flag kick. Next, Williams Cooke swivelled to engineer a ball to Ian Evans who unselfishly squared to Burgess , who fired past a post. Williams Cooke then found himself one on one with the overworked Railwaymen's keeper , who did well to smother the ball. And just before the break , Williams Cooke forced a corner but from it trod on the ball when poised to strike home. The second stanza did not see much of a difference as Town continued to dominate proceedings. Williams Cooke produced a sublime ball to Burgess who fed Ian Evans and the Denbigh man was unlucky to see his placed effort saved low down. Dynamo Paul Edwards won himself a free kick from which he picked out Jamie Hobson , whose superb cross was met by Kevin Evans who must score until denied by a despairing Jones' hand. Junction then threatened and Kevin Jones was immense at the back to clear up the danger on two occasions , but at the visitor's end a Kevin Evans beauty found Burgess who was pushed off the ball in the box, with the whistleblower waving play on. Ian Evans turned a man and let in Hobson , whose cross was plucked out of the air with Burgess and Williams Cooke sniffing any leftovers. Junction were simply not interested and Denbigh hit their fifth on 70 minutes. Harden conjured up a piece of magic to release Man of the Match Burgess in the box. The Denbigh man slipped it to Williams Cooke who was not content to beat one man , he had to beat two - and then squared it for Ian Evans who slammed home. The contest was over and Dyer sent on the returning Leon Gierke and Darren Cassidy , the former going close with a headed effort that just cleared a post. Fri, 9 March 2007 ![]() Denbigh Into Cookson Cup Final After Penalty Shoot Out Orme Spot Kick Seals Win Final Score 1-1 ( Denbigh win 4-2 on penalties AET) Holders Denbigh Town booked their place in the Cookson Cup Final courtesy of a nail biting penalty shootout at Central Park. Town were pushed all the way and had to come back from an early goal to force extra time and the dreaded penalties. It was the Junction who set the pace early doors and Mike Langstrom tested the Town keeper Hulse with an effort from 9 yards. Latest signing Kenny Burgess was bright up front for Town , and the new boy turned well in the box but fired over the bar when well placed. Adam Jones delivered an curling ball into the Junction box which was punched away by visiting keeper Rob Jones , followed up by Richard Williams Cooke who spanked a twenty five yarder straight into the keeper's breadbasket. Next , Burgess found Williams Cooke who in turn sought out Ian Evans who nicked the ball past the keeper but saw his cross-shot parried behind for a corner. Junction were not there to make up the numbers and slowly began to take charge. Neil Poynton's effort was well saved by the impressive Hulse and then John Roberts had to be brave to head away a ball into the box under pressure from Junction's Daryl Jones. Ashley Smith scraped Hulse's cross bar with the Denbigh keeper backpedalling and then on 20 minutes , the visitors made their momentum tell with a well taken goal by Daryl Jones who swept the ball home from a flag kick. Burgess threatened to go all the way as the cup holder's sought an immediate reply. Then Richard Williams Cooke was unlucky when a deft touch almost put him clear , but a Junction boot hacked the ball away. Adam Jones and Kevin Evans linked up to release Ryan Harden , but the little string-puller's effort was saved low down by Jones. Gatfield went on a surging run and delivered a sweet cross to Harden who tapped square to Williams Cooke , the big man being unfortunate to see his true strike beaten away by the excellent Jones. Hulse was brave at the other end as Oliver Walters got onto the end of a Junction breakaway. and then Gatfield did well down the right to find Burgess whose final touch just let him down as an equaliser seemed likely. A minute later Burgess found the net but his effort was ruled out for his challenge of a fumbling keeper. Junction turned up the heat and Nathan Jones tested Hulse with a dipping free kick and then had to get down to smother a Poynton effort. Town countered as Paul Edwards was put through by a Williams Cooke flick header , but the midfield dynamo fired across the face of the goal. At the other end Walters' first time effort failed to test Hulse when well placed and another Junction move ripped through Town's midfield and Walters again was disappointed with his pop on goal when slipped in by Ashley Smith. The second half was a different game as Denbigh came out all guns blazing. Kevin Evans found Edwards who struck a sweet ball low and hard across the box , the keeper just managing to scramble the ball to safety. A long Hulse clearence fell to Williams Cooke but again Jones in the Junction goal was on hand to grasp the ball. Ian Evans then had an effort parried and his follow up fell to Williams Cooke whose placed effort was cleared off the line. Town's pressure was finally rewarded and it was Kenny Burgess who grabbed parity after he was teed up by Williams Cooke on the 52 minute mark. Kevin Evans had a penalty claim waved away as Denbigh went for the kill and were now firmly camped in the Junction half of the pitch. The hosts were now at their best as first Williams Cooke fired across the face of goal , and then a Kevin Evans effort was palmed wide by the Junction shot-stopper. The same man fizzed a 30 yarder over the bar and then Harden and Williams Cooke teamed up to create an opportunity for Burgess. Harden was flattened outside the box and his freekick sniffed out Edwards who in turned swept in a low ball that cleared everyone in the 6 yard box. Manager Dyer threw on Darren Cassidy and Jamie Hobson as the holder's upped the ante still further , but despite a number of half chances , Junction forced the tie into extra time. Fatigue began to tell as Town swept forward on the restart. Adam Jones produced a great run , only to be denied at the death. Then Burgess ran his socks off to reach a ball and deliver a cross that was fly-kicked clear. Evans and Burgess set up Williams Cooke but the Denbigh man dragged the ball wide. A rare Junction attack cleared the bar and from the goal kick the ball found it's way to Williams Cooke who struck a post and was in agony to see the ball roll across the face of goal to safety. As extra time ebbed away , Evans sought out Williams Cooke but the Denbigh marksman just failed to add that final touch. It was all down to penalites. Hulse got down well to push away Dwyfor Williams' effort and Mark Orme , on as sub , stroked home the winning spot kick to secure another Cookson Cup Final for the holders. Thu, 1 March 2007 ![]() Sometimes the result is more important than the performance and Denbigh Town Reserves will be delighted to have gained maximum points against a very useful Cerrigydrudion side at Central Park. Town had to wait until the 85th minute to confirm victory and consolidate second place in Clwyd League Division One - and with Trefnant losing against Point of Ayr , the promotion spot looks to be going right down to the wire. It was the visitors who were putting on the style early doors , forcing three successive corners , with Gaz Smith having to be brave to keep his goal in tact. Denbigh began to settle and John Earnshaw played in James Kovall behind the defence but the midfielder was unlucky to find Gwyn Rowlands in the Cerrig goal in fine form. Rob Scrimshaw combined with James Kovall who slipped a ball to Matty Toole , but the goal machine's first time effort was blocked off. At the other end Town stopper Gaz Smith turned over a long range effort and followed it up with a great save from Jason Jones. A lovely move involving James Kovall and Rob Scrimshaw then released Chris Brown , but the stalwart was unfortunate to be penalised for handball as he cocked the pistol. Gary Madoc Jones was running himself ragged in the middle of the park , and he sought out the silky Gareth Lewis with a zipping cross , and the Denbigh man was amazed to see the Cerrig custodian save his sidefoot effort that had goal written all over it. Rob Scrimshaw had to be quick to clear away a Cerrig threat , but up the other end Chris Brown flicked a header wide of the target from an inswinging freekick. Cerrig were menacing up front and only a minor miracle prevented a score as the ball richocheted on the six yard line , with Lee Mason and Justin Jones brave in the thick of it. Jonny Bowen threatened to go all the way with a strong run , forcing a corner after a link up with Gareth Lewis. Denbigh had begun to pick up the pace and James Kovall was left head in hands as his volley just cleared the bar with the keeper rooted. Then Matty Toole's sublime flick set up Gary Madoc Jones , but the ball refused to sit up and the chance was scrambled clear. The same man was put through on 44 minutes but again the Cerrig shotstopper got down well to pouch his effort. That was only a temporary reprieve for the visitors as Matty Toole found himself one on one and the hitman duly despatched the ball to give Denbigh a narrow lead at half time. The hosts were more up for it in the second stanza. Chris Brown and John Earnshaw linked up to test the keeper , and a Gareth Lewis cross was put over his own bar by a Cerrig head. Next Gary Madoc Jones won a ball in midfield and he slipped the ball to John Earnshaw who fired over. At the other end , Gaz Smith put himself where angels fear to tread amidst the flying Cerrig boots. The visitors now ratcheted up the pressure and Gaz Smith must have had velcro gloves as a rip-snorter stuck like glue to the Denbigh stopper. The Central Park side had to weather a five minute storm with Justin Jones and Lee Mason immense at the back, but began to wrestle back the initiative. Gareth Lewis put in Chris Brown who squared it for Matty Toole to test the keeper. Then Gary Madoc Jones was strong to create a shooting chance for Chris Brown. Next a Matty Toole fizzer was turned over by Rowlands as Denbigh sought that killer second. Gareth Lewis and John Earnshaw found space on the left and Matty Toole joined the party , releasing Rob Scrimshaw who shot across the face of goal. Then Rowlands punched a wicked ball to the feet of Chris Brown , who took a touch but was denied by a Cerrig boot when about to pull the trigger. A rare Cerrig break almost brought the visitors an equaliser on the hour mark , the ball striking the bar from another long range effort. Gary Madoc Jones had a goal ruled out for a dubious offside , but Denbigh were not to be denied and it was the introduction of supersub Steffan Tomos that killed the game off. John Earnshaw won the ball in midfield and his pace let in Gary Madoc - Jones. He squared to the flying Steffan Tomos who joyously hit a left footer past the keeper from the edge of the box. The fleet footed Steffan Tomos almost grabbed himself a second on the death from a similar position , but his effort just beat the upright. Wed, 14 February 2007 ![]() A Mark Orme strike and a Richard Williams Cooke double booked Denbigh a place in the North Wales Coast FA Cup 2nd Round at the expense of Welsh Cup giant killers Holyhead Hotspur at The New Oval . Taking a break from the stress of league action , Town settled into a rhythm and looked confident as they pressed forward from the first whistle. Ryan Harden was busy early doors , and on the 10 minute mark his free kick found Andy Booker lurking at the edge of the box , his effort forcing the keeper into a fine save. Despite a bumpy playing surface , Denbigh were stroking the ball around with ease and a great ball by Ian Evans picked out Chris Moores who was up-ended on the edge of the box. From the resultant free kick , Harden found Mark Orme but his touch just failed to find the target. It was all Denbigh as Hotspur were reduced to breakaways and shots from distance. Booker and Adam Jones combined down the left and the fullback's superb inswinger was met by Evans whose header just grazed the post with the keeper grasping at air. Hulse in the Town goal was receiving running repairs to a knee injury , but he was rarely troubled as first Moores won a free kick on the right after a run at the Spurs goal , and then the same man just failed to connect with a dangerous Booker cross. Holyhead hit back and Jamie Hobson had to cover a lot of ground to prevent the home side getting off a shot on goal and then Cassidy had to be at his best to block off another Spurs incursion. Denbigh almost took a lead on 23 minutes when Ian Evans was fouled within shooting range and up stepped Booker to unleash a piledriver that was fisted away by the Holyhead shotstopper. And a minute later it was 1 - 0 to the Town as Harden picked out the busy Cassidy on the right. The Denbigh man did well to keep the ball in play and he skinned the full back before planting over a cross which was met by Orme who stabbed the ball into the net. Denbigh were not taking their foot off the pedal and Williams Cooke won the ball in midfield. His pass found Evans and the Denbigh hitman let rip with a shot that was forced behind for another Denbigh flag kick. Hulse was called into serious action for the first time on the half hour mark but Town immediately countered with a Moores screamer that was turned over by the under pressure Spurs goalie. On 40 minutes Town deservedly doubled their lead when the ball broke to Booker on the edge of the box. His slide rule pass found Williams Cooke and the big man danced his way past both defender and keeper to walk the ball into an empty net. Town weren't finished and on the stroke of half time , a Moores header was cleared off the line as Denbigh now threatened to run riot. Holyhead came out a more determined outfit in the second stanza and immediately whistled a shot just past the post and followed it up by testing Hulse with a snorter that the Denbigh keeper did well to pouch. It was now end to end as first Williams Cooke found Moores whose final touch let him down when well placed , and then Spurs went close following a foul by John Roberts on the edge of the visitors box. Williams Cooke undertook defensive duties to clear away a dangerous ball as Holyhead were looking to get back in the game and Hulse had to be alert to save a snapshot from Jonny Parry. Denbigh weathered the storm and the move of the match involving RWC , Jones , Booker and finally Moores almost resulted in a third but the keeper smothered the final shot. Denbigh were now back in the ascendancy as Ian Evans fed the workhorse Moores and only a last ditch tackle prevented the Denbigh man a certain goal. Swapping shirts is usually reserved for the final whistle , but Booker nearly had his taken off his back as the Denbigh conjuror caused havoc in the middle of the park. Another delightful move saw Moores feed Evans whose exquisite flick header fell to Cassidy , but the keeper got down well to smother the effort. Roberts in the Denbigh defence was snuffing out the few breakaways by the Holyhead forwards , and the same man picked out the willing Cassidy whose great run and cross was met by Moores , who was disappointed to head over when well placed. It was only a matter of time before the visitors scored again and it came on 79 minutes when Moores set up Booker , whose fumbled shot fell to the lurking Williams Cooke and the Denbigh man despatched the ball with the Holyhead defence all at sea. Denbigh were good value for their lead and Dyer sent on Gary Madoc Jones. The youngster was immediately into the fray as he won a stern challenge in midfield , took two paces and slammed the ball home only to see it ruled out for offside. Booker sent in a screamer after being found by a long ball out of defence , and then sub Steve Jones set up the same man after interlinking with the ever willing Williams Cooke. Then a Williams Cooke special fizzed across the box , just begging for that final touch. On the final whistle a strong Madoc Jones challenge won the ball and his dink ball let in the now rampant Williams Cooke who was denied his hat-trick by a super save from the Hotspur keeper. Mon, 5 February 2007 ![]() Llanrwst United 1 v Denbigh Town 1 Denbigh let slip a vital lead as Llanrwst United hit back to claim a draw at Gwydyr Park in the Welsh Alliance's match of the day. It was a scrappy opening to the game , with both sides feeling their opponents out , but on 10 minutes Paul Edwards found his midfield partner Kevin Evans, who took a touch , looked up and tested the Rwster keeper with a shot from the edge of the box. Chances at goal were at a premium as both sides failed to find a rhythm , though Denbigh may claim they were worthy of an early lead . That man Edwards thought he had scored from an Andy Booker flag kick. The wing wizard sent over a pin point cross and the Denbigh dynamo was unfortunate to see his effort strike the underside of the bar , with his colleagues claiming the ball had crossed the line. Then on 15 minutes , the influential Williams-Cooke set off on a run , feeding the over-lapping Adam Jones , but the full back's dink pass just failed to find Ian Evans who was lurking by the penalty spot. The on-form Williams-Cooke now had the wind in his nostrils as he collected the ball in the centre circle , and he beat one , then beat another and slammed the ball goalwards , but keeper Roberts was equal to the task and he pulled out a top drawer save at the expense of a corner. With Hulse a virtual spectator between the Denbigh sticks , it looked as though one goal might win it. The second half started as the first , in very scrappy mode , but the game burst into life on the 78 minute mark with Town grabbing a lead. Substitute Ryan Harden sent over a low fizzing flag kick which bamboozled everyone , apart from Captain Orme at the far post , and from 2 yards out the Denbigh man gratefully slammed the ball home to give Town an edge. But the Rwsters are nothing if not resilient , and the lead lasted only four minutes when the Denbigh defence was caught napping and a snap shot from the prolific Bryn Jenkins beat the despairing Hulse from the edge of the box. Denbigh bounced back as Evans and Harden combined , and the little conjurer had the Rwst back four flapping with a mazy dribble that almost set up the Town number nine. Booker was becoming a menace , and he ran at the heart of the Rwster back line. His sharp effort was parried behind , with Moores sniffing out any titbits. Williams-Cooke was pushed further forward as Dyer's men sought a winner , and the Denbigh man nearly restored the lead after yet another silky run at the heart of the United defence , but his effort was excellently saved at full stretch by the Rwster's custodian. Denbigh Town may be disappointed to lose a 1-0 lead but it is still all to play for in what is turning out to be an exciting Welsh Alliance League championship battle. Denbigh Town: Jamie Hulse , Matty Gatfield , Adam Jones , Mark Orme , John Roberts , Paul Edwards , Richard Williams Cooke , Kevin Evans , Ian Evans , Chris Moores , Andy Booker. Subs: Ryan Harden , Darren Cassidy , Jamie Hobson , Kevin Jones , Steve Jones. Denbigh Town Reserves 0 v Abergele Rovers 2 Global warming arrived in Denbigh with the Town's Reserves taking on league leaders Abergele Rovers in a hot & spicy encounter at Central Park. With both teams using the balmy weather conditions to play attractive football , Tony Sheridan's young charges can be rightly proud of their display against Gele , and had it not been for the wordwork , were probably worthy of a draw. From the outset , this was an end to end encounter and in the first minute Gareth Roberts tricked his way to the byline and his cross fell to Earnshaw , but the midfielder's first timer was saved by Gele's Taylor. The difficulty of Denbigh's task was shown to them when , on the 7 minutes mark , a burst out of defence gave the visitors an early lead. Quick feet in midfield released Tom Galvin who found himself one on one with the Denbigh keeper and it was 1-0. Denbigh responded as Madoc Jones tested the keeper after a surging run , but at the other end Smith had to stop another certain goal after Galvin again found himself clear in front of the target. Town fought back and a Bowen long throw found the head of Sheridan , the Denbigh youngster's flick being fired over by the incoming Madoc-Jones. Then a James Koval freekick found the head of the same man , but again the Denbigh poacher just failed to find the target. The Vale side began to pile on the pressure as Scrimshaw threatened to go all the way , only to be downed in cynical fashion by an outstretched Rovers foot. Just as Denbigh were taking a grip , Rovers doubled their lead on 29 minutes with a speculative effort from Sammy McDougall that flew into the net from a free kick out on the right touchline. Denbigh now had to stand up and be counted as the confident league leaders threatened to run riot.Smith got down well to pouch a Steel sizzler , then Abbott scraped the left post when under pressure from Justin Jones. With Lee Mason and Jones leading by example , Denbigh weathered the onslaught and gradually clawed their way back into the game , with Madoc Jones and Roberts combining to create an opening that was tipped away by the Gele shotstopper. Opportunity knocked when Roberts conjured a ball out of nowhere into the danger zone , but with first Toole and then Kovall hesitant , the danger was cleared. Earnshaw was running himself ragged in the middle of the park and one great surge and cross was dealt with at full stretch by Taylor , with Toole lurking for any scraps. Then Toole and Madoc Jones combined well and the latter was unlucky to drag his shot wide when well placed. The same man was left head in hands when a Lee Mason free kick was punched out and the Madoc Jones volley struck the bar with the Gele keeper AWOL. Then on half time a dubious offside decision robbed Madoc Jones of a one on one situation , after sublime work by Scrimshaw. On the hour mark , the game began to hot up , with Steel seeing red for two bookable offences and then Denbigh lost Sheridan with a straight red for an off the ball incident. Town now began to dominate and Madoc Jones fired wide when a classy Earnshaw free kick fell to the Denbigh hitman. Then Gaz Lewis rose like a salmon at the far post , but was unlucky to see his header saved by the impressive Taylor. With Aber offering little up front , Man of the Match Scrimshaw was on the receiving end of some stern challenges , but the little maestro managed to feed action man Madoc Jones whose snapshot was turned round the post. Then the same man was left cursing his luck as a minute later his superb volley smacked against the bar after a delightful ball from the skillful Lewis. Town were not giving it up , and first Earnshaw curled an effort wide , then Madoc Jones should have scored when the ball fell to him from a flag kick , and then on the final whistle , Bowen and Madoc Jones combined to release Scrimshaw , but the ball was scrambled away to safety just as a consolation seemed likely. Denbigh Town Reserves: Gareth Smith , Jonny Bowen , Rob Scrimshaw , Justin Jones , Lee Mason , John Earnshaw , James Kovall , Tom Sheridan , Matty Toole , Gary Madoc Jones , Gareth Roberts. Subs: Andy Skeoch , Chris Brown , Steffan Tomos , Jamie Clayton , Gaz Lewis , Kevin James Category: match reports -- posted at: 6:16 PM Comments[0]
