Town wrapped up the Welsh Alliance League Championship with a champagne performance at in-form Llanrug United , writes Pete Glynn at Eithin Duon. Needing just a single point to put clear water between themselves and runners up Rhyl Reserves , Tim Dyer had his troops fired up from the first whistle and Matty Gatfield was unlucky on 2 minutes to see his fizzing low drive superbly saved by big Aled Williams between the United sticks. Rug were looking to spoil the party and ever-present Jamie Hulse had to put his body on the line as Terry Williams broke clear from a long hopeful ball , and the young keeper did well to block of the opportunity. The Central Park outfit were bossing the game and on 25 minutes they took a deserved lead , but it was on the back of a double save by that man Hulse. He launched a long bomb which fell to worker-bee Ian Evans. With deftness of feet , the Denbigh man gathered the ball , and waltzed around the United custodian before walking the ball into an empty net. A feisty wind from the Fricsan was making conditions difficult for both sides on a bone hard postage stamp of a pitch and suddenly the hosts upped a gear. Stern defending from Kevin Jones and then Captain Mark Orme was required to prevent strikes on goal , but then on 40 minutes United poached an equaliser through Terry Williams who headed a short cross over Hulse and into the net to give the Snowdonia side parity. Dyer spelt out what needed to be done in the second stanza and Williams Cooke responded when his lovely inside ball released Kenny Burgess who tried to lob big Aled but was unfortunate to see the ball go wide. The same man then had another opportunity after superb work by Orme and Kevin Jones , but rather than have a pop at goal , the silky winger tried to square it to Ian Evans with an overhit pass and the grateful United defence breathed again. Moores and then Lundstram shot on sight as Town upped the ante , but it was when Dyer added Kevin Evans to the equation , that Town found themselves in front. The left midfielder danced his way past two and his low cross bibbled and bobbled before arriving at the feet of Williams Cooke. The big man controlled it , ghosted past a defender and spanked an unstoppable rasper past the helpless Aled Williams. At 2-1 Denbigh took the game by its proverbials and pounded at a beleaguered Llanrug defence , yet Town's third my be put down as a fluke as Kenny Burgess swept over a ball from wide right and everyone was open mouthed to see it find its way between the sticks , courtesy of wind and happy fortune. Thinking it was game , set and match , the champions-elect released their foot from the throat of their opponents and Hulse pulled off the save of the season when a glorious cross was met by the head of United's Ian Burgess , and the youngster was at full stretch to turn it over the bar. Burgess was not to be denied and the Llanrug sub made it 3-2 a minute later with a spectacular over head kick. Last word went to Matty Gatfield who found himself up front on his own-some. He challenged for the ball and with the United defender making a dog's dinner of a clearance , the little full back said thank you very much and swept a low ball beyond big Aled to make the game , and Championship , a certainty. Wed, 25 April 2007 ![]() Dominant Denbigh close-in on titleBy Pete Glynn DENBIGH TOWN 5 CONWY UNITED 1 DENBIGH swept aside Conwy United to all but clinch the Welsh Alliance Championship. With a superior goal difference, Denbigh only have to avoid a serious drubbing at Llanrug United on Saturday to lift the trophy - but on this form Tim Dyer's men will be looking to finish the season in style. The Central Park outfit were up for it from the first kick and posted their intention when a lovely move involving Moores and Williams Cooke released full back Kevin Jones in the United box. Jones swept the ball home only to see his effort ruled out for offside. It was only a temporary respite as a minute later Ryan Harden won a header in midfield which fell to Chris Moores. His feed through found Richard Williams Cooke who had somehow managed to stay on-side and the big man bore down on goal, before lashing the ball home from eight yards. On 17 minutes it was 2-0 after a lovely cross into the box by Williams Cooke was missed by everyone except the alert Mike Lundstram at the far post, who took a touch before slamming the ball past the helpless Dwain Jones in the Conwy goal. The visitors hit back and Jamie Jones fired in a long range missile that grazed the Town's crossbar. But Town all but killed the game on 25 minutes when Kevin Jones produced a delightful through ball to Williams Cooke. He ghosted past a man before clinically sliding the ball past the Conwy custodian with his right foot, which he usually only uses to stand on! Jamie Hulse in the Town goal had to get down well to snaffle a Lee Thomas free kick, but at the other end excellent running by Paul Edwards provided an opportunity for the quicksilver Lundstram to send in a dangerous ball into the box, which was cleared at a panic by the shell-shocked Morfa outfit. The visitors were unfortunate not to register when the overlapping Jamie Jones found himself one-on-one with Hulse and somehow the Denbigh stopper got a piece of the ball which struck the hand of Kevin Jones, but from the resultant free kick Denbigh managed to clear courtesy of big Danny Jellicoe. The second half saw a more determined United and a flashing first time Bryn Phillips effort scraped a Denbigh post after an excellent run by the speedy Paul Cassidy. Orme thought he had notched Denbigh's fourth with a brave header, but was befuddled to see the whistleblower point to the spot and master blaster Paul Edwards stepped up to lash the penalty kick into the onion bag, giving the keeper no chance. Kevin Evans showed a silky touch to release William Cooke out on the left and the Denbigh forward tried his luck with a lob that the keeper did well to grab at the second attempt. But another was on its way and it was Lundstram who grabbed his second after a flowing move. United snatched a consolation after a one-two put the impressive Paul Cassidy free in front of goal and his firm strike beat Hulse to make the final score 5-1. *After Match Hospitality: The Hand Inn Final Score: Denbigh Town 5 Conwy United 1 Scorers: Denbigh Town : Richard Williams Cooke (2) Mike Lundstram (2) Paul Edwards (Pen) Conwy Utd : Paul Cassidy With Rhyl winning 2-1 , this means that Town are champions unless they lose 5-0 ( or by 5 clear goals) at Llanrug Utd on Saturday.

Sat, 21 April 2007 ![]() Burgess grabs key goal as Town scrape by BethesdaBy Peter Glynn BETHESDA ATHLETIC 0, DENBIGH TOWN 1 SOMETIMES the result is more important than the performance and this proved to be the case as Denbigh snatched all three points with a solitary goal against Bethesda that now sees Town on the verge of taking the Welsh Alliance crown. Denbigh started strongly and on two minutes the effervescent Paul Edwards pinched the ball in the middle of the park, played a ball to Ian Evans whose pass found the returning Richard Williams Cooke. The big man decided to have a pop first time but was unlucky to see his lob clear the left post with the keeper stranded. Opportunity almost knocked for Chris Moores on five minutes when a long Hulse clearance bounced beyond a retreating home defence. Moores took a touch before unleashing a shot that the keeper did well to smother. Paul Edwards and Ryan Harden bamboozled the Bethesda defence at a short corner and the little conjuror fizzed over a cross that was headed away by Simon Williams with Ian Evans steaming in. From the subsequent corner, Williams Cooke played in Chris Moores whose hooked effort hit wood. Suddenly Town began to struggle and Bethesda almost pinched an unlikely lead on 40 minutes with a shot that inched just past the left post. In the second half it was spicing up and on the hour mark, Bethesda's Simon Williams saw red when, in frustration on being penalised, he attempted to kick the ball into the River Ogwen, connecting instead with Ian Evans. On 73 minutes, the visitors made that all-important breakthrough. Jamie Hobson sent over a trademark pinpointer into the six-yard box for Kenny Burgess to bury the vital opener. One is rarely enough in football and Pesda player boss Danny Glyn Roberts sent himself on. He should have levelled six minutes later, but curled an effort wide with the goal begging. Veteran Steve Jones turned on a sixpence to send one just wide, then back in Town's defence Hobson received a nasty blow to the leg as things began to turn a little sour. Handbags at fifty paces near the dugouts forced the Man In Black to have to walk the line as things threatened to go pear shaped, but ultimately Denbigh played out the rest of the match in comparative ease to secure the points. Final Score: Pesda 0 v Denbigh Town 1

Holders Denbigh Town booked themselves a Cookson Cup Final date against Llanrug United in an enthralling semi final encounter against Llandudno Junction at Y Morfa , Conwy. 2-1 hardly begins to tell the story as Town ran the Junction ragged in the first half , with two excellently taken goals by Ryan Harden , who slammed a first time effort past Joe Welsh in the Llan goal and Chris Moores who controlled a Cassidy pass in the box , beat a man and spanked the ball home. It could , and possibly should , have been more as Moores somehow clipped an effort over the bar from three yards out and the same man lifted another over with only Welsh to beat. The second half started in similar vein and Ian Evans was desperate to see his sweet volley find the net only to be ruled out for offside. Denbigh Captain , Kevin Jones , struck the bar after a superb move involving Moores and Kenny Burgess , but with 20 minutes remaining , Junction pulled a goal back with a spectacular effort and looked for a moment as if they may force extra time. With Tommy Harrison immaculate in the heart of the Town defence , Denbigh dealt with most of what Junction could conjure up and , apart from a few harum-scarums , played out the final five minutes in the Junction half to record a satisfying win over a team boasting several Cymru Alliance players. Final Score: Denbigh Town 2 v Llandudno Junction 1 Tonight I recorded the 90 minute commentary - and here for your entertainment are the Ryan Harden & Chris Moores goals. I cannot post the whole game as the file is too huge and I am short of that amount of space in my account. Love trains? Then a visit to Y Morfa Ground is recommended as one passes every 30 minutes.

Sat, 14 April 2007 ![]() Denbigh Town swept aside Llanberis to inch closer to the Welsh Alliance Championship with a four goal second half salvo at sunny Central Park writes Peter Glynn. After a barren first stanza , during which both sides huffed and puffed with little reward in sub-tropical temperatures , it was Town who suddenly pulled on their scoring boots to register four quality strikes as they totally dominated proceedings. Goal merchant Ian Evans grabbed the first on 54 minutes after excellent work by Kevin Jones. The full back combined with Darren Cassidy , who found Chris Moores just outside the area. His slide rule pass picked out Evans who thumped the ball past the host's keeper to record his 6th strike in 5 games. The Central Park side now showed their class as they struck with a move that started with Jamie Hulse. The keeper picked out Moores , who spotted the all-action Paul Edwards in the centre of midfield. Edwards burst forward and released the on-rushing Kevin Jones and the full back converted superbly well to double Town's advantage. The Jones-Cassidy double act was creating panic in the 'Beris defence and it was Cassidy who lobbed over a ball that Edwards just failed to convert. Calvin Davies was pushed up front as Dyer shuffled his pack , and the Welshpool wizard was soon on the scoresheet to give Town their killer third. Paul Edwards pinched the ball in midfield and he dinked a ball to Ian Evans , who slipped in Davies who gave the keeper no chance with a clinical strike from 10 yards on 72 minutes. A minute later it should have been four as Cassidy hit the woodwork from the edge of the box , then the same man curled another just over as Town were cutting through the Llanberis midfield like a knife through butter. Dyer added Gary Madoc Jones and Rob Schrimshaw to the brew and the little full back's give and go released Jamie Hobson , whose sweeping cross was parried behind for a corner. The fourth was surely coming and Llanberis were punished by a shocker of a back pass which was pounced on 30 yards out by Madoc Jones. The sub bore down on the visitor's goal and he danced his way around the keeper to slam gleefully into an empty net. It was now a matter of how many as first Kevin Evans saw his effort turned round a post. Then brother Ian turned on a ball and the keeper did well to block off his shot. Edwards released a piledriver and then at the death Cassidy slammed an effort just past a post as Town continued to carve out opportunities and set themselves up for that Championship run in. Denbigh Town: Hulse , Hobson , K.Jones , Roberts , Orme , Davies , Harden , Edwards , Cassidy , Moores , I.Evans. Subs (used) Schrimshaw , Madoc-Jones , K.Evans. After Match Hospitality: The Golden Lion Blog notes: Amazingly I have managed to commentate through half of the second stanza substituting 'Conwy' for 'Llanberis'. Amazing how the mind plays tricks. So listen out for these. I need a few new ideas on where the podcast is going. I've done commentary , personal rants , player / manager/committee/fan interviews , team talks , phone ins , competitions... anyone have any ideas? And how long is optimum time? 45 minutes is too long in my humble opinion , but 25 minutes seems to be average. I did manage to get to the Hope (and Anchor) but ended up in the Mason's Arms as Alchemy were playing there. Every song they played , I own - my favourites were the Thin Lizzy stuff , ACDC and best of all , Rainbow's 'Kill The King'. Tue, 10 April 2007 ![]() NWCFACC Semi Final at Halkyn Road , Holywell Denbigh Town 0 Flint Town United 3 Scorers: Beck 2 , Leech. Town succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Flint Town United in the semi final of the NWCFA Challenge Cup under the lights at Halkyn Road , Holywell. Denbigh dominated for long periods , but were killed off by three clinical strikes , including a 3rd minute opener from the impressive Shaun Beck. The Silkmen came out all guns blazing , and before Beck struck , Flint were unfortunate to see a Kevin Leech header strike wood in the very first minute of the game. The Central Park outfit weathered that early onslaught and gradually began to take charge , without seriously troubling the Flint goal. Tommy Harrison and Jamie Hobson were tireless in midfield and up front Chris Moores and Ian Evans battled hard but were denied by a combination of good Flint Town defending and serious problems with a bobbly pitch. Beck grabbed his second from a breakaway on the hour and an over head effort from the veteran Leech on 82 minutes wrapped up matters. With Matt Gatfield the pick of the Town players , Denbigh's best moment fell to Kevin Evans whose sweetly struck shot was saved at full length by the Silkmen's keeper. Sun, 8 April 2007 ![]() Greenfield FC are the winners of the 2007 REM Jones Memorial Cup winners, which took place at sunny Central Park. An attendance of 208 watched the game in which Greenfield FC were all over Rovers in the first half , opening up a 2-0 at the interval. Owain Roberts , on 12 minutes, chippeed the Gele keeper beautifully to put FC ahead. Greenfield then hit a post after Tony Emm had conceded a free kick on the edge of the box. Karl Ainsworth grabbed a second on the 30 minutes, and all in all was thoroughly deserved. Gele gave it their best shot in the second , but despite pressure , FC held them at bay , until Paul Demilow pinched a goal on the 80 minutes mark , but that proved only a consolation. Being a beautiful day , it did show Central Park in its full glory. The pitc was in excellent condition , and the players revelled in the playing surface. Ally , Dennis , Kita , Jess , Steve and Pedro were 'mine hosts' for the Clwyd League officials. The kitchen was at maximum , selling out of all hot foods and cold drinks!

Tue, 3 April 2007 ![]() Denbigh Town 3 v Rhydymwyn 2 Mike Lundstram , Ian Evans (2) Nice!
Ian Evans at the Double Report: Last gasp Denbigh Town grabbed top spot in the Welsh Alliance with a 3-2 win over local rivals Rhydymwyn in a topsy turvy encounter at Central Park writes Peter Glynn. Town squandered an early 2-0 lead to let the visitors back in it and only a 90th minute header from Ian Evans gave Town the points when a draw looked likely. The hosts came out on fire with Kenny Burgess at his best , and it was the winger who laid it off to Darren Cassidy . A first time ball found new boy Mike Lundstram , who thought he had opened his account but his effort was ruled out for offside by the merry flagwaver. Lundstram was upended a minute later in the box as Denbigh began to cut through a struggling Rhyd defence , but a warning was posted at the other end when Luke Reece had his shot blocked off by a last ditch tackle from Mark Orme. Town continuted to carve open the visitors and on 12 minutes Cassidy won the ball in midfield. His run prodded a ball to the feet of Burgess and the winger sent over an exact cross that was headed home by Lundstram at the far post to give the Central Park outfit an early lead. Burgess linked up with Kevin Evans who forced a corner and Lundstram may have bagged a second but this time his nod cleared the bar. Adam Jones had to put his body on the line as Rhyd countered , but then a sublime ball by Burgess released Lundstram whose effort was saved by visiting shotstopper Stanton. Rhyd were troublesome up front and Reece found the skillfull Peter Hughes who forced a corner which was punched clear by Jamie Hulse with the visiting strikers piling in. Ryan Harden sent in a ball that Burgess headed wide , but then on 35 minutes it could have been two as Cassidy strode towards goal and was in dismay to see his super strike thud back off the crossbar. However a minute later it was 2-0 as Burgess took advantage of a sleepy Rhyd backline and Ian Evans slammed home. But almost from the restart Rhyd plundered a goal back, as Adrian Parry found himself in acres and he spanked the ball past a helpless Hulse. Denbigh responded and Kevin Evans shot wide with a fizzing effort , but then at the other end Dafydd Griffith saw his effort inch wide of the Town goal as Rhyd continued to grow in confidence. The second stanza saw the visitors in the ascendancy in gloomy conditions. Harden had been replaced by Hobson at the break following a tough challenge and the game developed into a tit for tat encounter as first Cassidy saw his low shot saved and then at the other end Peter Hughes posed problems for the Town defence with some tricky footwork. And it was Hughes who was unfortunate to have a penalty claim turned down when brought to ground in the box. Cassidy was linking well with Man of the Match Burgess , whose cross found the willing Lundstram again , but this time his header was too weak to trouble the Rhyd keeper. Burgess next set up Cassidy and he launched an effort that was spectacularly tipped round the post. On the hour mark , Rhyd should have scored but Steve Bennett shot straight at Hulse when one on one , and then the same man sliced wide when easier to convert. Lundstram has pace to burn and his run produced a flag kick from which Mark Orme powered a header wide. Town were looking to put the game to bed but were leaving gaps at the back that Rhyd were eager to exploit. Adam Jones had to be at his best to concede a corner but Town then countered and Matt Gatfield swung over a superb cross that was plucked out of the air as Ian Evans challenged. Burgess and Lundstram were complimenting each other , and Ian Evans joined the party but his first time shot cleared the bar. Then a trademark Gatfield cross picked out Lundstram whose nod went wide as Town started to pose serious questions. Kevin Evans felt the full force of a challenge by Parry , who saw yellow , and then Town were left bellowing for a penalty as Ian Evans had his legs taken as he danced his way towards the target. But on 87 minutes the visitors did what they had been threatening to do on the break and another defensive error let in Reece who tucked the ball past a stranded Hulse to give the Flintshire side a deserved equaliser. But dogged Denbigh would not lie down , as first another Cassidy rasper struck wood. Then in the final minute it was that man Ian Evans who grabbed his second and all three points with a planted header at the far post from a pinpoint Gatfield cross , to take Denbigh a point clear of Rhyl with a game in hand. Team: Hulse , Gatfield , A. Jones , Orme , Roberts , Cassidy , Harden , K.Evans , I. Evans , Lundstram , Burgess. Subs: Hobson (used) , Madoc-Jones , K.Jones , S.Jones.

Sat, 31 March 2007 ![]() Sometimes the result is more important than the performance and that was the case as Denbigh came from a goal down to pinch a 2-1 victory against Bethesda Athletic at Central Park writes Pete Glynn. Useful Latics had come to spoil the party and from kick off the hosts were up against it as the Meurig Park outfit mounted raid after raid on the Denbigh goal. Jason Joyce had an effort on the 3 minute mark that skimmed wide of the right post , and then the same man crossed into the path of Danny Glyn Roberts , but the goal-machine was thwarted by Denbigh captain Mark Orme when poised to let rip. Matty Gatfield was busy on the left , and his give and go fell invitingly to Ian Evans , but the Town's Number 9 lifted his effort over the bar. On 10 minutes , Kevin Evans mishit a first time shot , which fell nicely to Darren Cassidy but the midfielder bounced in frustration as his low drive was turned round the post by Latic's shotstopper Owen. Harden was being kept at bay by some stern challenges but on 20 minutes the mini-magician hoodwinked his way to the bye line and his cross flashed across goal , just begging for that final touch. Latics nearly opened their account when Hulse was forced to push a long range effort around a post , but at the other end a shove on Kevin Evans in the box was airily waved away by referee Newport. Bethesda looked the more hungry and they began to over run the Town midfield , who were missing the presence of Edwards and Williams-Cooke. Danny Glyn fed the willing Mark Owen who spanked a right footer into Hulse's breadbasket. It was a temproary respite as minute later the visitors edged in front. Bethesda's full back Chris Joyce floated in a cross that deceived everyone and settled in the back of the Town net to give the visitors a deserved , if fortunate , lead. A poor goal kick then gave Danny Glyn a sniff as his lob was turned onto the bar by Hulse and from the corner the same man should have buried his free header with the Town defence in slumberland. If Town were lacklustre in the first half , then the opposite can be said of their performance in the second. Chris Moores gathered a clearance and slipped in a first time ball to Ian Evans who planted just wide when well placed. Then Cassidy ran helter skelter at the Latic's defence and was unfortunate to see his final ball hacked clear with Burgess steaming in. Harden won a free kick and his delivery fell to the increasingly busy Burgess who fired over and then an Ian Evans header was superbly saved by the Bethesda custodian. Jamie Hobson was added to the mix as Town pressed for the equaliser and his ball found Ian Evans in the clear , but the Denbigh man was cynically pulled back by Simon Williams , which earned the Latic's captain a yellow. Next Burgess crossed over a fizzer which was met by Cassidy on the volley , with Owen pulling off another superb save , assisted by the woodwork. A rare Bethesda moment saw Darren Gowans shoot just wide , but on 73 minutes Town were level. Kevin Evans swept over the ball from the left and Hobson met the ball on the volley to fire home through a ruck of players. Town now scented a win and Ian Evans spotted Cassidy whose shot broke to Mark Orme 5 yards from goal , but Owen pulled off his third quality save of the match to deny a certain goal. Denbigh were not to be denied as a Harden free kick on 88 minutes was met by an unchallenged Burgess who planted a firm header past a stranded Owen to give Town a precious lead. Right at the death , Hulse showed his worth with a magnificent full stretch save from Danny Glyn which secured all three points and this win makes Town almost racing certs for a return to the Cymru Alliance.
